Setting up Terra Mystica – A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey there! Are you ready to dive into the wonderful world of Terra Mystica? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! In this guide, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of setting up the game. Let’s get started!

Gather Your Materials

First things first, you’ll need to gather all the necessary materials for playing Terra Mystica. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • The Terra Mystica game board
  • Player boards for each player
  • Player pieces: houses, bridges, and priests
  • Power tokens
  • Various other tokens for resources and bonuses
  • A bag to hold the various tokens
  • The rulebook (trust me, it’ll come in handy!)

Make sure you have everything on this list before proceeding to the next step. It’s no fun having to stop mid-game to search for missing pieces!

Prepare the Game Board

Now that you have all your materials ready, it’s time to prepare the game board. Start by placing the game board in the center of the table. Make sure all the resources and bonus tiles are within reach of all players.

Next, give each player a player board and the corresponding player pieces. Each player should also receive some power tokens to start with. The number of power tokens and player pieces will depend on the number of players in the game.

Choose Factions and Starting Positions

Now comes the exciting part – choosing your faction! Each player will choose a faction to play as. Each faction has its own unique abilities and starting resources.

Once everyone has chosen their faction, it’s time to determine the starting positions. The starting positions determine where each player’s initial dwellings will be placed on the game board.

To determine starting positions, each player will take turns placing their starting pieces on the game board. The starting player places their pieces first, followed by the next player, and so on. Remember, the order of play is important, as it can affect your strategy!

Get Ready to Play!

With the game board set up and factions and starting positions chosen, you’re almost ready to start playing Terra Mystica! Just a few more steps to go.

Make sure everyone knows how victory points are scored in the game. Victory points are earned by upgrading your dwellings, constructing buildings, and achieving objectives throughout the game.

Lastly, don’t forget to review the rulebook with all the players. It’s important to have a good understanding of the rules before diving into the game. This will help prevent any confusion or disagreements during gameplay.

Let the Mystical Journey Begin!

Now that you’re all set up and ready to go, it’s time to embark on your mystical journey through Terra Mystica! Have fun exploring the game, discovering new strategies, and competing for victory. Good luck!

Hey there! Let’s talk about the Faction boards and how they work. Each board has something called a Transformation cycle. It’s like a little journey through different types of terrain, and it’s super cool!

There are seven types of terrain, and on the Faction board, one of them will be your Home terrain. You can spot it easily because it’s bigger and its color matches your faction’s color. So it’s like your special spot on the board!

The Transformation cycle is kind of like a guide that shows you how the terrain changes from one type to another. It’s like a map that helps you understand how everything connects. Pretty neat, huh?

Now, remember, each Faction board has its own Transformation cycle, so they’re all unique. That’s what makes each faction special and different! It’s all about finding your place in the world and embracing where you come from.

So go ahead and explore the Faction boards and discover the amazing journey of transformation that awaits you! Have fun, and enjoy the ride!

So here’s what you need to do: gather up all the things that belong to your team – the Priests, Structures, Markers, and Bridges. Make sure they’re all in your faction’s color.

Now, take the 7 Priests and the 3 Bridges and put them right next to your Faction board. They’ll be important later on.

You’ll also want to place your Structures in the right spots on your Faction board. They have specific spaces just for them.

Okay, let me break it down for you in simpler terms. You need to hand out the 7 Markers that belong to you and are of your color.

When you start the game, the first thing you need to do is place a Marker on the leftmost space of the Shipping track. This space has a value of 0.

Note that the Mermaids are an exception and start with a value of 1, so they don’t need to place this Marker.

The next step is to put a Marker on the bottommost space of your Faction board’s Exchange track. This space is where 3 Workers equal 1 Spade.

Please keep in mind that the Darklings do not require this Marker.

Alright, let’s get started with the game! First things first, I’m going to put another marker on space 20 of the Victory point track on the Game board.

Next, I’ll distribute the remaining four markers on space 0 of each of the four Cult tracks on the Cult board.

Setting up your faction

Now it’s time to set up your faction. Each faction has its own board that shows how to do this.

Starting resources

Before we begin, you need to collect your starting resources. These resources are shown at the top right corner of your Faction board, right under your faction’s name. Make sure to grab them!

When you start the game, you’ll need to take the resources shown on your Faction board and place them there. These resources will give you an initial boost, and you’ll also receive income during the first round.

Advancing in the Cult

On your Faction board, you’ll see some Cult symbols next to the starting resources. Each symbol represents a Cult Marker on the Cult board. Move each corresponding marker up one space.

Power Bowls

At the top left corner of your Faction board, you’ll find three Bowls of Power. You need to distribute a total of 12 Power tokens, also known as Power, between Bowl I and Bowl II, following the instructions on your Faction board.

Board Games and Cult Classics

Hey there! If you’re new to board games, I’ve got some great suggestions for you. Let’s start with the setup for a 4-player game. Don’t worry, I’ll explain it all step by step. After that, I’ll give you the setup for games with different numbers of players.

Scoring Tiles

First, let’s talk about scoring tiles. Picture this: you take six scoring tiles and place them face-up on the game board, but don’t just put them in any order – make it random! Each of these tiles represents a round in the game. Oh, and don’t forget to put the other two tiles back in the game box, we don’t need them right now.

Now, pay attention to the top scoring tile. Take the game end token and cover the right half of that tile. Why? Well, that token tells us when the game will come to an end. Exciting, isn’t it?

The Importance of Bonus Cards

Let’s talk about bonus cards! They play a big role in the game, and you’ll want to pay attention to them. You see, bonus cards can give you special advantages and help you get ahead. But it’s not just about luck – you’ll need to make some strategic decisions too.

First things first, let’s shuffle the 9 bonus cards. How many cards you’ll need depends on how many players are in the game. If there are two players, you’ll need 5 bonus cards. For three players, you’ll need 6. If there are four players, you’ll need 7 bonus cards. And for five players, you’ll need 8 bonus cards.

Now the fun part! You’ll randomly draw the required number of bonus cards and place them face-up next to each other. The rest of the cards can go back into the game box.

Picking a Faction Board

Choosing your faction is an important decision. The starting player gets to choose their faction first and takes the faction board that goes with it. Then, in clockwise order, each other player gets to choose a faction board and decide which side to use.

Here’s another option: if you want to keep things fair, you can randomly assign the factions. Just take one Dwelling of each color and distribute them among the players. After that, choose one of the two factions on the corresponding faction board.

If you’ve already picked a faction, it’s time to set up your game. Follow the steps for the introductory game to distribute your color’s components. But hold off on placing your Dwellings on the Game board just yet.

Getting Starter Structures in Place

If you’re reading this for the first time, you can skip this section. In the introductory game, the first Structures are already set up on specific spaces.

First, the Starting player places one of their Dwellings on a Home terrain. Then, going clockwise, each player does the same, until it’s the last player’s turn. The final player places their second Dwelling in the same way, but counterclockwise.

After everyone has placed their second Dwelling, the Nomads put down their third Dwelling. The Chaos Magicians, on the other hand, wait until all other players have placed all of their Dwellings before placing their only Dwelling. If needed, this comes after the Nomads have placed their third Dwelling.

The Lowdown

You can only put Dwellings on your faction’s Home terrain. Aside from that, there are no rules or restrictions to worry about.

When you’re playing the game, you’ll notice that all the structures, including the dwellings, are arranged from left to right on your Faction board.

Choosing Your First Bonus Card

Bonus cards are special cards that can give you extra money, unlock special abilities, or help you earn more points for certain buildings in the game.

To choose your first Bonus card, we’ll start with the last player and go in the opposite direction of the clock. Each of you will pick one Bonus card for yourself.

Now, take a moment to put one coin from the general supply on each of the remaining Bonus cards. This is to make them more appealing in the later rounds when they might not be chosen as often.

Remember, at the end of each round, three Bonus cards will still be left and they’ll each get one coin as well.
