Ubongo Game Rules

I want to introduce you to the exciting world of Ubongo, a game where you can test your puzzle-solving skills and have a blast! Are you ready? Let’s dive in and learn all about it.

So, what is Ubongo? Think of it as a thrilling race against time, where you get to solve colorful puzzles and accumulate gems. These gems will be your key to victory, so keep your eyes on the prize!

Now, let’s talk about how to play Ubongo. Each player will receive their own puzzle board, which is shaped like a jigsaw puzzle. Your goal is to fill your puzzle board with pieces in a specific shape. To make it even more challenging, there’s a timer ticking away, so you need to work quickly and efficiently.

But don’t worry, you won’t be left to figure it out on your own. The game comes with a set of puzzle cards that show you the shape you need to create. These cards come in three levels of difficulty, so you can start with the easier ones and work your way up to the more complex challenges.

To begin a round, a puzzle card is revealed, and all players start simultaneously. You can rotate, flip, and arrange the puzzle pieces to match the shape on the card. Once you’ve successfully filled your puzzle board, stop the timer and count how many gems you’ve earned.

The number of gems you receive depends on your performance. The first player to complete their puzzle board gets the most gems, with the amount decreasing for each subsequent player. If you’re unable to complete your puzzle within the time limit, don’t worry! You can still earn gems based on the number of pieces you managed to fit into your board.

The game continues with several rounds, and the player with the most gems at the end emerges victorious! It’s a game of strategy, speed, and a touch of luck, making every round a unique and exciting experience.

Ubongo is an excellent choice for game nights, gatherings, or even a fun afternoon with friends. It challenges your spatial reasoning, visual perception, and decision-making skills, all while providing a healthy dose of adrenaline-fueled fun.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your puzzle pieces, start the timer, and let the Ubongo adventure begin. Good luck, and may the best puzzler win!

When it’s time to play Ubongo, I get really excited. First, everyone gets their own set of 12 tiles. But that’s not all – we also get a brand new puzzle board at the start of each round! And guess what? The puzzle we have to solve is decided by rolling the die. How cool is that?

Now, here’s the fun part. All of us players have to work together and race against the clock. We have to use our tiles to cover up the light-colored area on our puzzle boards. The tricky part is making sure the whole area is covered. It’s like solving a puzzle within a puzzle!

Here’s the best part – when someone finishes their puzzle before the time runs out, they shout “Ubongo!” and get to take a gem from the bag. And if you’re one of the fastest players, you even get an extra bonus gem! It’s like a reward for being super quick and clever!

Components

Here’s what you’ll find inside the box:

  • 4 sets of 12 Tiles
  • 36 Puzzle boards (each with a different puzzle)
  • 1 Die
  • 1 Hourglass
  • 1 Cloth bag
  • 1 Game round track
  • 58 Gems

Object of the Game

The goal is simple: have the most valuable gem collection after 9 rounds.

Setup

Let’s get started:

Take all the 36 puzzle boards out of the box. You’ll notice that there are two difficulty levels. One side of the boards has easier tasks that only need three tiles each.

The other side has trickier tasks that require four tiles. But since this is your first game, I recommend using the easier tasks with only three tiles.

Make sure to place all the puzzle boards in a stack, face down, in the middle of the table. This way, the tasks you’ll be completing will be hidden at first.

As soon as we begin the game, each of us will receive 12 unique tiles, each in a different color. However, if we’re playing with less than four people, we’ll need to return the unused tiles back to the box.

Let’s make sure to position the game round track right in the center of the table.

Now, let’s grab nine blue sapphires and nine brown ambers from the gem bag. We’ll place these gems into the corresponding holes on the game round track. These 18 gems act as both rewards and the round counter.

It’s important to note that each gem holds a different value: Red is worth 4 points, Blue is worth 3 points, Green is worth 2 points, and Brown is worth 1 point. The goal is to accumulate the most valuable gems by the end of the game.

We’ll also need to put the hourglass and the die on the table.

Now that everything is set up, let’s take a moment to understand how a turn is structured.

The game consists of a total of nine rounds.

During each round, we’ll follow a specific sequence of actions.

When you’re playing this game, the first thing you’ll do is grab a puzzle board from the pile and put it in front of you. Make sure to flip it over so that you can see the tasks that need three tiles.

Next, the youngest player will roll the die and start the timer with the hourglass. The symbol that comes up on the die will tell us which task we have to complete as quickly as we can.

When I play this game, I start by looking at my puzzle board. I have 12 tiles to choose from. The symbol rolled tells me which tiles to select. I need to be quick!

Once I find the tiles I need, I try to fit them into the light-colored area on my puzzle board. It’s important that I cover the entire area without any tiles sticking out. To make it fit, I can twist and turn the tiles.

Once I finish my task, I shout “Ubongo” to let everyone know.

While I’m shouting, the other players are still trying to finish their tasks before time runs out.

If someone notices that the hourglass has run out, they shout “Stop” and we all have to immediately stop.

A Second Chance

Oh no! The hourglass ran out and nobody finished their task. But don’t worry, we get a second chance. We flip the hourglass and keep trying to complete our tasks.

If the same thing happens again and nobody finishes before time runs out, the round is over.

Winning Rewards

If I manage to finish my task, I get a reward. And so does everyone else who finishes.

Here are the rewards we can get:

When I play the game of Ubongo, I race against others to fit the tiles perfectly into my placement area. The objective is to be the fastest player to complete the task and yell out “Ubongo!” When I do this, I get rewarded with a blue sapphire from the game round track. But that’s not all! I also get to randomly choose a gem from the bag. It’s an exciting challenge that keeps me on my toes!

If I’m not the quickest player, that’s okay too. The second fastest player gets a brown amber from the game round track. Just like the fastest player, they also get to choose a gem from the bag. It’s a great consolation prize for their efforts.

Even if I’m not the first or second fastest, I still have a chance to win a gem. The third and fourth fastest players get to randomly select a gem from the bag. It’s always a surprise to see which gem I end up with!

The game of Ubongo is all about speed and strategy. The faster I can place my tiles, the better chance I have of winning the coveted blue sapphire. Each round is a new opportunity to show off my skills and snag some valuable gems. It’s a thrilling game that keeps me coming back for more!

So, whether I’m the fastest player or not, I know that I’ll always have a shot at claiming a gem in Ubongo. It’s a game that rewards both speed and luck, and it’s a whole lot of fun!

Unfortunately, if you couldn’t cover your placement area completely before the hourglass ran out, you won’t get anything in this round.

    The Round Ends

The rows of nine sapphires and nine ambers also work as a round counter.

When the round comes to an end, the rows must have exactly one blue sapphire and one brown amber less than when the round started.

However, it’s possible that only one or none of the players finishes their task before the hourglass runs out. In that case, the number of gems on the track needs to be reduced at the end of the round.

If only one player managed to fit the tiles perfectly into their placement area, the brown amber for this round must be taken out and put back in the bag.

If no one could finish the task, we remove the blue sapphire and brown amber from this round, and put them back in the bag.

After the round is over, we put all the puzzle boards used in the round on top of a discard pile that everyone shares.

Now it’s time for a new round. Each player grabs a new puzzle board from the stack of unused boards. We take turns rolling the die and flipping the hourglass to start each round.

The player to the left of the person who rolled the die last round gets to roll the die and flip the hourglass this time.

The game comes to an end after nine rounds, or when there are no more gems left on the game round track.

To calculate your score, add up the values of the gems you’ve collected.

If you have the most points, congratulations! You win the game.

If multiple players have the same highest score in the game, we have a “playoff” to determine the winner. Each player with the same score gets a puzzle board. One player rolls the die, and we don’t use the hourglass. The player who finishes the task first wins the entire game!

When I reach the end of the game, I find myself with a single red ruby, a solitary blue sapphire, a trio of green emeralds, and a solid group of three brown ambers. Taking into account their respective values, I calculate my total score as follows: 1×4 + 1×3 + 3×2 + 3×1 = 16 points.

    Going It Alone

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy Ubongo all by yourself, all you need is a clock or stopwatch. Take on the challenge of completing as many tasks as you can within a five-, ten-, or twenty-minute time limit.

Keep in mind: our Play Smarter app even includes a built-in timer for playing solo!

Another option for playing solo is to time yourself as you tackle a set number of tasks. Whether it’s five, ten, or twenty, see how long it takes you to complete them all.

If you find yourself stuck on a particular task, don’t get discouraged. Just set it aside and draw a fresh puzzle board. Write down your results and challenge yourself to beat your own record each time you play.
