Tides of Madness Game Rules

Welcome to the world of Tides of Madness! In this game, I’ll be your guide as we dive into the thrilling depths of strategic gameplay and cunning tactics.

To embark on this journey, you’ll need a deck of Tides of Madness cards and a fellow adventurer to challenge. The objective is simple – outwit your opponent and score the most victory points.

Here’s how it works: we’ll each take turns drawing cards from the deck and selecting one to add to our tableau. Each card has a suit and a special ability, so choose wisely. The suits range from the mysterious Cultists and the arcane Elder Things to the ancient Great Old Ones.

Once we have both drawn and played three cards, the real fun begins. We’ll unleash the power of the Ancient Ones, earning victory points based on the suits in our tableau. But beware! The madness can consume us if we’re not careful – certain combinations of cards will drive us towards insanity and we’ll lose points.

But fear not! You can counteract the madness with sanity tokens. These precious resources can be used strategically to mitigate your losses and stay ahead of the game. Just remember to manage your sanity wisely, for once it’s gone, there’s no retrieving it.

At the end of each round, we’ll evaluate our tableau and track our victory points. The player with the most points at the end of three rounds emerges as the master of Tides of Madness.

So, are you ready to plunge into the depths of this strategic battle? Let’s see who can harness the power of the Ancient Ones and emerge victorious. Good luck, and may your sanity prevail!

Hey there! Let’s talk about Tides of Madness and how you can win this game. The main objective is to score the most Victory Points (VP) by expanding your knowledge of the Ancient Ones. But be careful, because there’s a catch – you need to watch out for madness! If you end up with 9 or more Madness tokens, you lose the game.

The game is played over 3 rounds. In each round, you’ll have the chance to choose cards that will help you gain knowledge and earn VP. Some of these cards can also give you Madness. So, be strategic in your choices!

Once the third round is complete, if both players are still standing, the player with the most VP wins! So make sure to make every move count.

Take a Look at the Cards

In the game, every card has a name and an ability. The abilities are objectives that score you points if you meet the conditions at the end of each round.

There are three cards for each of the five suits in the game: Races, Locations, Outer Gods, Great Old Ones, and Manuscripts.

Additionally, there are 3 cards that don’t belong to any suit. Be careful, as 8 of the cards have a Madness value of 5.

Getting Started

To start, shuffle the cards and deal 5 to each player. These cards will be your starting hand. Put the rest of the cards face down to create a draw pile. Make sure to keep the pencil, notepad, and tokens close by.

Playing the Game

The game consists of 3 rounds, during which both players will select cards and score victory points (VP) at the end of each round.

Each round has three phases: Drafting, Scoring, and Refreshing.

Phase A: Drafting

The Drafting phase consists of three steps, which are repeated five times in the following order:

1. Select one card from your hand and place it face down in front of you.

2. Reveal your chosen card at the same time as your opponent.

First, I’ll give you a summary of the key elements from the original text:

– Instructions for passing cards to your opponent during a game

– Steps to follow until both players have 5 cards in front of them and no cards left in hand

– Scoring process after all 5 cards have been played

– Earning Madness tokens for cards with the Madness icon

– Option to gain 4 points or heal 1 Madness if you have the most Madness

Now, let’s rewrite this content in a more engaging and accessible way:

Step 1: Passing Cards

Pass the rest of your cards to your opponent.

Step 2: Getting Ready

Repeat these steps until both players have 5 cards facing up in front of them and no cards left in their hands.

Step 3: Scoring Time

After all 5 cards are played and revealed, it’s time to score! Follow these steps:

– Madness Tokens: Take a Madness token for each card you have with the Madness icon.

– The Madness Champion: If you have the most Madness this round, you get to decide: either gain 4 points or discard a token to heal 1 Madness. If there’s a tie, no one gets to choose.

That’s it! Now you know how to play and score in this exciting game. Enjoy the madness!

Now, let’s go over each of your cards and see how many points you get. Write down your points on the notepad.

If you have 9 or more Madness, the game is over, and you lose.

If both players have 9 or more Madness, the game ends right away, and there is no winner.

Here’s an example of how scoring works: Suppose at the end of the first round, you have the following cards: Nyarlathotep, Azathoth, Dagon, Pnakotic Manuscripts, and Elder Things.

Guess what? Your opponent has a roster that includes Yog-Sothoth, Cthulhu, Hastur, Mountains of Madness, and Shub-Niggurath.

When you play this card, I give you 2 Madness tokens () and your opponent gets 1.

So, here’s what’s going on: you get to choose 4 extra cards because you’re not at risk of going mad. Take a look at the scores: 0, 3, 7, 7, and 6. Plus, you count more cards for a total of 27. Not too shabby, right? Oh, and you also get 4 more points for having the most madness tokens this round. Your opponent, on the other hand, only scores 7 points for Yog-Sothoth. The rest of their cards are worth nothing. Gotta love those extra points!

C. Refresh

(You can skip this step in Round 3)

Here’s what I do next:

  • I take back 5 cards that I played this round and add them to my hand.
  • Then, I choose 1 card from my hand and put it face down in front of me.
  • Next, I choose another card from my hand and place it face up in the game box, at the same time as my opponent.
  • Now, I reveal the card that I placed face down.
  • To finish, I deal 2 new cards to each player, so we both have 5 cards again.

In Round 2, everything is the same as the first round, except that I start with 1 card already in play. At the end of the round, I score all 6 cards.

In Round 3, I start with 2 cards in play and score all 7 cards. There is no refresh phase in the third round.

Cards

There are a total of 18 cards: 3 for each of the 5 suits, and 3 without a suit. 8 cards also have the Madness feature. Most cards have a condition that, if met, will give you VP (Victory Points).

If you have the majority in a suit, it means you have more cards of that suit than your opponent (ties don’t count).

Here’s more about one of the cards:

16. Miskatonic University (no suit) with @Madness How to play Tides of Madness Official Rules UltraFoodMess: For each majority, you gain 4 How to play Tides of Madness Official Rules UltraFoodMess. These points are added to any points earned from other cards that give you points for a specific majority.

17. Shub-Niggurath (with no costume): When you reveal cards, double the value of the card you played before (place this card on top of the previously played one to remember this). If this is the first card you played this round, it does nothing.

Hey there! Let me tell you about an exciting card called “Dreamlands” in the game. It’s a special card that adds a wild suit to your hand. You get to choose what suit it represents before each round. But that’s not all! When the scoring happens, if you find out that you have the most Madness, you also get to take one Madness token from your opponent. Cool, right?

The Game’s End

Once the third round ends, it’s time to determine the winner. If neither player has lost to Madness, the player with the most Victory Points (VP) is the winner. So keep an eye on those Victory Points! They’re crucial to winning the game.

But what if there’s a tie? Well, in that rare case, both players actually share the victory. It’s a pretty unique situation, isn’t it? We celebrate the shared victory, but we also have to accept the shared defeat. It’s all part of the game!
