How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules

Welcome to the Potion Explosion Game!

Hey, have you ever wanted to dive into the magical world of potions? Well, you’re in luck because I’ve got just the game for you. It’s called Potion Explosion, and it’s tons of fun!

In Potion Explosion, you’ll be taking on the role of a young wizard-in-training who’s trying to brew the perfect combination of magical potions. Your goal is to create explosions by matching different colored marbles, which will help you complete your potions and earn points.

Now, before we get started, let me give you a quick rundown of the game rules. It’s important to understand how everything works so you can make the most of your gameplay.

Setting Up:

First things first, let’s set up the game board. You’ll notice that there are several rows of potion ingredients, represented by marbles, on the board. These rows are divided into three levels – beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

Each player will have their own personal potion shelf, where they can store completed potions. You’ll also have a flask, which can hold up to three marbles.

During setup, shuffle the different colored marbles and place them in the dispenser. Finally, give each player two random potions and you’re ready to begin!

Gameplay:

On your turn, you have two actions you can take: pick marbles or complete potions.

If you choose to pick marbles, you can select one marble from the dispenser. As you do so, any marbles of the same color that collide will create an explosion. When this happens, you get to take those marbles as well! But be careful, if any marbles fall off the board, you’ll have to take negative points.

Once you’ve collected your marbles, you can either add them to your flask or use them to complete potions. Potions require specific combinations of marbles – just refer to the formula on the potion card.

If you decide to complete a potion, simply return the required marbles from your flask to the dispenser and take the corresponding potion card. Place the completed potion on your personal potion shelf to earn points at the end of the game.

Scoring:

The game continues until there are no more marbles left in the dispenser. At this point, each player will tally up their points.

You’ll earn points for each completed potion on your shelf, as well as any special abilities shown on the potion cards. Additionally, if you’ve created a chain reaction of explosions, you’ll earn extra points for that too!

The player with the most points wins the game. But don’t worry if you don’t come out on top – remember, practice makes perfect, and there’s always another chance to brew some amazing potions!

When I’m brewing my Potions, I grab one Ingredient marble from the Dispenser on each turn. Then, I try to make Ingredients of the same color bump into each other and create big explosions! The more explosions I make, the quicker I can brew my potions!

Each Potion recipe can require anywhere from 4 to 7 Ingredients. You can see how many Ingredients you need by looking at the holes on the Potion tiles. Fill those holes with marbles of the matching color, and once every hole is filled, your Potion is complete!

Every Potion gives you a certain number of points, depending on how many Ingredients it required and the strength of the magical power it gives you.

Did you know that in the game, if I make 3 Potions with the same power, or 5 Potions with 5 different powers, I’ll get a special Skill token? This token is worth 4 points, and it can really give me an advantage. It’s like a secret weapon that can boost my score!

But here’s the catch – it’s not that easy to get these tokens. I have to work hard and strategize to make sure I collect enough Potions with the right combination of powers. If I manage to do that, I’ll be one step closer to triggering the end of the game.

Now, winning the game is all about collecting points. And guess what? The player with the most points is the ultimate winner. So, not only do I have to focus on getting those Skill tokens, but I also need to be strategic about everything else I do in the game. Every move counts!

Getting Set Up

So, you’ve gotten your hands on this amazing game! Before we dive in, here’s a little tip: especially for your first few games, it’s probably best to leave out the Balm of Uttermost Stickiness and Filter of Lavamancing potions. Trust me on this one – those potions are for the truly skilled potion brewers!

  1. When we start playing, each of us gets a Desk board to put in front of us. Remember to leave some space at the top and bottom.
  2. The player who recently made a drink gets the First Player token. This is just a little reminder: it doesn’t change as we play. We take turns going clockwise.
  3. Now, let’s grab all the Potion tiles. We’ll take out 2 of the 8 different types of Potions – you can choose which ones or draw randomly. Put the ones we remove back in the box – we won’t need them for this game.

  • In a Potion Party game, the first step is to gather the Potion tiles. There are 35 different kinds of Potion tiles, each with a unique effect. It’s important to understand the different types, as they can have various outcomes in the game. Some potions have positive effects, while others may have negative consequences.
  •

  • To set up the game, 2 random starter Potion tiles are selected from the remaining 6 types for each player. These tiles have the symbol and are placed in the center of the table with the Recipe side facing up, showing a grey ribbon. Starting with the First Player, each player chooses one Starter Potion tile, and then they take a second tile in reverse order.
  •

  • After selecting their Starter Potion tiles, each player places them on the two Bunsen burners of their Desk. This is where they’ll be brewing their potions throughout the game.
  •

  • Once all players have chosen their Starter Potion tiles, the remaining potion tiles are shuffled and divided into 5 stacks. These stacks are placed with the Recipe side facing up, ready for the game to begin.
  • As you set up the game, don’t forget to follow these steps:

First, place all the Ingredient marbles in the “tank” of the Dispenser. Make sure they roll down and fill all five tracks of the slide. It’s important to have everything ready to go.

Next, put the Little Help tokens and Skill tokens near the Dispenser. Take some of the Skill tokens and create a “countdown” stack. The number of Skill tokens you need will depend on how many players are participating. Here’s a table that shows the quantity needed for each player:

    – 2 players: 4 Skill tokens

    – 3 players: 5 Skill tokens

    – 4 players: 6 Skill tokens

Now you’re all set and ready to begin!

Once the game starts, remember that it’s played in turns. Each player takes their turn in clockwise order. When it’s your turn, you must choose and take one Ingredient marble from the Dispenser. Be aware that this action might trigger one or more Explosions.

Enjoy the game and have fun creating your potions!

When you play this game, you have the option to do two things during your turn. First, you can choose to drink one or more of the potions you have already made. This will give you certain advantages that can help you win the game. Second, you can ask the Professor for a little help. The Professor will give you some advice or assistance that can improve your chances of winning.

    Collecting Ingredients

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

So, here’s the deal: when you want to take an Ingredient from the Dispenser, all you have to do is choose one. It’s pretty easy, really. You can pick any marble that you can see on the Dispenser, except for the 9th marble on each slide track. I’ll show you on the diagram to the left.

    Here Comes the Boom

Now, let’s picture this scene: when you remove an Ingredient marble from the slide, all the marbles above it come rolling down to fill the space. And that, my friend, is when things get explosive!

Get ready for it. If two Ingredient marbles of the same color bump into each other, BOOM! They explode. And when those Ingredients explode, any other Ingredients of the same color that are connected to them also explode. It’s like a chain reaction! You get to take all the exploding Ingredients, just like the one you picked from the Dispenser. Pretty cool, right?

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Did you know that sometimes when you pick a marble from the middle of a group of three or more connected marbles of the same color, it triggers an Explosion? It’s a pretty cool move, right?

And here’s something interesting: if you remove all the exploding marbles and there is another collision between marbles of the same color, that collision triggers another Explosion, and you get to take those exploding marbles too!

But wait, there’s more! If yet another collision between marbles of the same color happens after that, you get a third Explosion and so on. It can keep happening! Take a look at the example on the left to see what I mean.

In the example, you’ll notice that the two blue Ingredient marbles in the last step don’t explode when they collide. Explosions only occur when two or more marbles of the same color collide.

Additionally, if you start a big chain of Explosions, one or more slide tracks may end up partially empty. But don’t worry, this is not a problem.

Getting Some Assistance from The Professor

During your turn, you have the option to ask for a Little Help from the Professor. This can only be done once per turn, either before or after your regular pick. All you need to do is take a Little Help token and choose 1 ingredient marble from the Dispenser.

It’s important to note that when you use the Little Help from The Professor, you won’t be able to trigger an Explosion, even if you collide two marbles of the same color.

When you play the game, it’s important to keep in mind that every time you use a Little Help token, you’ll lose 2 points. It may seem like a small decision, but it can have a big impact on your final score. So, you’ll need to carefully consider whether using the token is worth the point deduction.

Hey there! Before you make your regular pick for the turn, I suggest asking for a little help from me. Trust me, it can make a big difference.

    The Magic Ingredients

Once you have the Ingredients in hand, whether you got them on your own, with a little help from the professor, or by drinking a Potion, you’re ready to go. You’ll end up with a bunch of marbles in your hand, and here are some ways you can use them:

    • The first thing you need to do is place any Ingredients you have on the matching empty holes of the same color on the Potion tiles brewing on your Desk. So, for example, a yellow marble goes on a yellow hole. Keep in mind, once an Ingredient is placed, you can’t move it until the Potion is complete.

If you have any Ingredient marbles that you can’t put on a Potion tile in your Brewing area, you have to put them in your small retort flask on your Desk. We call this your Ingredient Pool. You can move Ingredients between your Pool and your hand whenever it’s your turn.

Remember, your Ingredient Pool can only hold up to 3 Ingredients at a time. Also, keep in mind that you can only hold Ingredients in your hand until your turn ends.

Once you end your turn, you can’t move Ingredients out of your Pool until your next turn begins.

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Example: I have 7 marbles in my hand: 4 red and 3 black. I have 2 blue marbles in my Pool left from my last turn. I place the 4 red marbles and 1 blue marble taken from my Pool on the Potions on my Desk.

I want to keep all the black marbles, so I take the other blue marble from my Pool back into my hand and place the 3 black marbles into my Pool. Then I end my turn and discard the blue marble back into the Dispenser.

    Completing a Potion

When all of the holes of a Potion tile have been filled with Ingredients, that Potion has been completed. Put all of the marbles from the Potion back into the Dispenser, then flip the Potion tile from its front (the Recipe side) to its back (the Completed side) and move it to the area below my Desk. This is my Potion area.

Potions in the game have a specific point value assigned to them, which is indicated on the tile itself. You can also drink potions to trigger unique magical effects that you can use only once.

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

    Using Magic Potions

During your turn, you have the incredible ability to drink Potions and activate their magical powers. Each Potion is a unique power that can only be used once, so once you drink a Potion, you can’t drink it again.

To show that you have used a Potion, simply flip it over. Then, you can experience its effects!

When you use a Potion to take marbles from the Dispenser, you won’t trigger any Explosions. Explosions can only happen when you use your regular pick during your turn. Similarly, using a Little Help from the professor won’t trigger any Explosions.

Drinking a Potion doesn’t mean you lose it – it still counts as a complete Potion and is worth the same number of points at the end of the game.

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

If you’re wondering about when to drink Potions, I’ve got the answer for you. As soon as you finish brewing them, you can start sipping away if you want. This exam isn’t just about memorizing facts and theories about potions. It’s about showing off your skills as a witch or wizard. And one of those skills is being able to use the potions you make to your advantage!

    Adding Ingredients to the Dispenser

When it’s time to put Ingredient marbles into the Dispenser, there are a few rules you gotta follow:

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

    • Roll the marbles randomly onto the lid. Don’t try to make them go into a specific slide track.
    • If any of the marbles end up on top of another one, move them to an empty slide track.

At the start of each turn, you’ll have 2 Potion tiles in your Brewing area and you can’t finish more than 2 Potions in one turn. Pretty cool, huh?

    End Of The Turn

Once you’ve made your usual choice for the turn, asked the professor for a Little Help (if you wanted to), and drunk all the Potions you planned to, your turn is over. Just follow these steps:

If you still have marbles in your hand and your Ingredient Pool is already full, you have to throw them back into the tank of the Dispenser. But if you have less than 2 Potion tiles in your Brewing area, you need to get new Potions from any of the five stacks and put them on your Bunsen burners. Remember, you can’t move Ingredients from your pool to the new Potion tiles because your turn is already over. After that, check if you earned any Skill tokens. And also check if the game end has been triggered. By the way, Skill tokens are special rewards for students who are really talented. You can earn them by mastering a specific Potion or by brewing a lot of different ones!

Hey there! Have you ever wondered how to earn Skill tokens in the game? Well, I’ve got some interesting information for you. It’s pretty cool!

So, here’s the deal. If you manage to brew at least 3 Potions of the same kind, you’ll automatically score a Skill token. That means you need to have 3 Potions with the same power. Pretty neat, right?

But wait, there’s more! If you’re feeling adventurous and brew at least 5 different kinds of Potions, you’ll also get yourself a Skill token. That means you need to complete Potions with 5 different powers. Talk about a challenge!

Now, here comes the exciting part. Whenever you accomplish either of these feats, you’ll receive a Skill token from the “countdown” stack. If the “countdown” stack is empty, no worries! You can still grab a Skill token from the general pool. That’s pretty generous, don’t you think?

Here’s the best part. Each Skill token you earn is worth a whopping 4 points at the end of the game. So, the more Skill tokens you collect, the higher your score will be. Amazing!

So, there you have it. The secret to earning Skill tokens in the game. It’s quite the challenge, but the rewards are definitely worth it. Good luck, and may the Skill tokens be ever in your favor!

How to play Potion Explosion Official Rules UltraFoodMess

Listen up! I’ve got something important to tell you. Let’s talk about Skill tokens. Now, pay attention because this is crucial. If you manage to brew 6 potions with the same power, you’ll only receive 1 Skill token. Yes, you heard that right. Even if you brewed 6 powerful potions, you’ll still only get 1 Skill token. It’s a strange rule, but that’s how it works.

      The End of the Game

Before you start the game, you need to put some Skill tokens in a “countdown” stack. Look at the table on the right for the exact number. Now, here’s what’s interesting. The game can end in two ways. One, if someone takes the last Skill token from the “countdown” stack, the game is over. Or two, if there are no more Potion tiles available, the game is also over. Got it so far?

Now, here’s how it works. After a player finishes their turn, if the last Skill token is taken, bam! The game is triggered to end. But wait, there’s more. If, at the end of a player’s round, there are no more Potion tiles left, the game is also triggered to end. So be prepared, because the end of the game can sneak up on you.

The game goes on in a clockwise direction until the player to the right of the First Player completes their next turn. That way, everybody has played the same number of turns. Got it? Good. Let the games begin!

Even if you’ve already received all the Skill tokens you need, you can still earn more from the general pool if you can manage it.

After that, we add up the points we got from completing Potion tiles and collecting Skill tokens. But, hold on! We need to subtract 2 points for every Little Help token we have.

And here’s the exciting part – the player with the most points wins!

If there’s a tie, each tied player gets a chance to trigger an Explosion. Starting with the First Player, everyone takes a marble from the Dispenser.

The player who ends up with the most marbles wins the game.

      Number of players
      “Countdown” stack
      2 4 Skill tokens
      3 5 Skill tokens
      4 6 Skill tokens
