First things first, what exactly is the Mexican Train Game? Well, it’s a super fun dominoes game that can be played by people of all ages. It’s called “Mexican Train” because, just like a train, the goal is to create a line of dominoes that keeps on going and going!

So, how do you play? Here are the basic rules:

1. The game requires a set of double-12 dominoes. Each player starts with a certain number of dominoes, depending on how many people are playing.

2. To start the game, the first player places a domino on the table. This is called the “starter domino.” From there, players take turns adding dominoes to the train. A train is a line of dominoes connected by matching numbers.

3. But here’s the twist: if a player can’t play a domino on the train, they must draw a domino from the boneyard (the unused dominoes) and pass their turn.

4. Ah, the “Mexican Train” itself! If a player has a domino with a matching number to the starter domino, they can start their own train. This train is separate from the main train, and other players can also add on to it.

5. Once a player has played all their dominoes, they get to yell out “Domino!” and the round ends. Points are then calculated based on the leftover dominoes in other players’ hands. The aim is to have the lowest total score at the end of the game.

6. The game continues with new rounds until a player reaches a certain pre-determined score to win the game.

To win the game, you want to be the first player to play all of your dominoes or have the fewest points when the game ends. The winner is the one with the lowest total score after all the rounds.

Now, let’s talk about setting up the game. Start by placing all the dominoes facedown on the table and shuffling them up. Each player will draw their starting hand from this mixed pile. The number of dominoes you draw depends on how many players are in the game:

– If there are 2-4 players, you’ll draw 15 dominoes.

– For 5-6 players, you’ll draw 11 dominoes.

– And if there are 7-8 players, you’ll draw 8 dominoes.

Once everyone has their dominoes, make sure to arrange them so that you can see the colored dots, but keep them hidden from the other players. The remaining facedown dominoes on the table are called the “boneyard,” and players will draw from it during the game.

Now, here’s what you need to do: take a train marker and put it in front of you on the table with your dominoes. Oh, and don’t forget to put the train hub in the middle of the table!

So, you’re ready to dive into the exciting world of Mexican Train Dominoes? Great! Let’s get started. As the game begins, it’s time to find out who gets to take the first move. The player with the highest double domino in their hand is the lucky one. They kick off the game by placing that domino right in the center of the train hub. And if they have another domino in their hand that has one end matching the center double domino, they can start their own personal train as well. Pretty cool, right?

Now, to begin your personal train, all you have to do is place your domino in the empty train station that’s closest to you on the train hub. It’s that simple! And guess what? Your turn is done, and now it’s time for the next player to make their move. Keep the game rolling by playing to the left. It’s all about strategic moves and keeping the momentum going.

When we play the game of Domino Train, we all need to make sure we start building our own personal train right from the beginning. Remember, you can only have one personal train. Now, if you can’t find a domino that matches the double domino in the center, don’t worry. Just take a domino from the boneyard.

But here’s the thing. If you are able to play that domino right away, go ahead and do it. Your turn will be over. But if you can’t play it immediately, keep the domino in your hand and put your train marker in your train station.

Now, here’s something interesting. If there are other players who have already started their personal trains, they have a chance to start your personal train too. How do they do that? Well, they just need to follow the rules we’ll explain in the Train Markers section below!

When you play a domino, it has to match the end of the last domino on the train. You need to place the matching end so that it connects to the open end of the domino. On each turn, you can only play one domino, unless you have a double domino.

Double Dominoes

When you play a double domino, you should place it perpendicular to the last domino on the train. If you play a double domino, you must immediately play a second domino that matches one end of the double domino.

If I don’t have a matching domino in my hand, I have to draw one from the boneyard. But if I still can’t satisfy the double domino, I have to put my train marker on my train and my turn is done.

The next player has to try to satisfy the double domino. If they can’t do it with a domino from their hand, they have to draw from the boneyard. If they can use the drawn domino to satisfy the double, they have to do it and then their turn is over.

But if that player still can’t satisfy the double domino, they have to put their own train marker on their personal train and their turn is over.

Let’s dive into the next phase of the game called “doubles.” In this phase, I have to keep playing until I have a double domino. Once I’ve got that covered, regular play starts again with the person sitting on my left.

Train Markers

If I can’t play a domino on my turn, I have to put my train marker on my train. I put it on the last domino on my train if I’ve started it, or on my train station if I haven’t. Then it’s your turn.

As long as my train marker is on my train, you can play your dominoes on it. But once I can play a domino on my train again, I take the marker off and you can’t play on my train anymore.

Mexican Train

Once you’ve started your own train, you can decide to kickstart a “Mexican Train” by placing a tile with one matching end to the center double domino anywhere on the table.

Remember, only one Mexican Train can be initiated in the game. It’s up to any player to start the Mexican Train on their turn, and they can do it whenever they want during the game. Just make sure the Mexican Train doesn’t connect to the train hub or disrupt other players’ personal trains. Any player can contribute to the Mexican Train.

Personal Train

Playing on Another Player’s Train

If another player has already started their train and you have your train marker, you can play on their train. How cool is that?

Ending the Game

The game ends when a player plays their last domino. That player becomes the winner! But here’s an interesting twist: if the last domino played is a double, it doesn’t have to be matched with another domino. Exciting, right?

However, if a player can’t play a domino from their hand and can’t draw a new tile because there are no more left, they have to place their train marker on their personal train and pass. And if all the players are forced to pass, then it’s game over.

When the game is over, it’s time to add up the dots on the tiles that each player has left. And guess what? The player with the lowest score wins! So, make sure you strategize and play your best.
