Insider Game Rules

What is Insider?

Insider is a popular party game that tests your deduction and communication skills. In the game, players try to guess who the Insider is among them by asking each other questions. However, the Insider’s goal is to stay hidden and mislead the other players. It’s a game that combines strategy, intuition, and social interaction, making it perfect for game nights with friends.

How to Play

Playing Insider is easy and fun! Here are the simple steps:

  1. Gather a group of players and choose one person to be the Master.
  2. The Master shuffles the question cards and deals one to each player, including themselves. The cards have a secret role written on them, indicating whether the player is the Insider or a regular player.
  3. Without revealing their role, the Master starts the game by asking a question related to the secret word written on their card. For example, if the secret word is “food,” the Master could ask, “What is your favorite type of cuisine?”
  4. The players then take turns asking each other questions. The goal is for the regular players to figure out who the Insider is based on their answers. The Insider, on the other hand, tries to blend in and avoid suspicion.
  5. The game continues with players engaging in discussion and asking strategic questions to uncover the Insider’s identity. The Master acts as a moderator, ensuring the game runs smoothly.
  6. After a set time or when the players feel ready, they must collectively vote on who they think the Insider is. If the majority votes correctly, the regular players win. If the Insider remains unidentified, they win.

Tips for Success

Want to improve your chances of winning? Here are some tips:

  • Observe closely: Pay attention to how each player answers questions and look for any inconsistencies or suspicious behavior.
  • Ask strategic questions: Craft your questions carefully to elicit revealing responses from the players.
  • Communicate effectively: Make sure to share your observations and suspicions with the other players to collaborate in identifying the Insider.
  • Trust your instincts: Sometimes, your gut feeling can lead you to the correct answer.
  • Enjoy the game: Insider is not just about winning or losing; it’s about having fun and engaging with others.

Now that you know the rules and have some tips in your pocket, it’s time to gather your friends and start playing Insider! Get ready for an exciting and mind-boggling experience as you try to solve the mystery of the hidden Insider.

So, do we really have the power to make our own choices? Or are our decisions influenced by what we hear and see, even when we think we’re freely choosing? In this game, you’ll get to talk to the other players and work together to unravel the truth. But be careful, because one of you might be an insider, secretly manipulating the discussion and deceiving everyone else. Can you figure out who it is and come out on top? Let’s dive in and discover how this thrilling game works!

The Game Components

  • 42 Theme Cards
  • 8 Role Cards
  • Sand Timer
  • Instructions

Setting Up the Game

  • Gather enough role tiles for each player, ensuring that there are always judge and insider tiles available. Put any extra citizen tiles back in the box.
  • Take all the thematic cards and create a deck with them.

Phase 1: Roles Are Assigned

Shuffle the role tiles and give one to each player. The player chosen as the judge reveals their role to the other players, while everyone else keeps their role a secret.

Step 2: Discovering the Theme

Now, let’s move on to the second phase. Here’s what the judge needs to do and say:

“Okay, everyone, it’s time for the next step. Close your eyes.”

When I reveal the top card of the deck, it will show me the theme of the round. All I have to do is look at the number on the back of the card that is above the deck.

If you don’t know the word, you need to pick another one. Here’s how the game works:

  • The judge writes a concept on paper.
  • Next, the judge closes their eyes.
  • The Insider, who knows the concept, opens their eyes and confirms what it is.
  • The Insider then closes their eyes, and the judge opens theirs again. They place the concept card back in the deck and put the guide tile on top of it.
  • Finally, everyone opens their eyes.

Phase 3: Questions and Answers

  • The judge flips the hourglass to start the timer.
  • The players, including the Insider, take turns asking questions that can be answered with “yes,” “no,” or “I don’t know”.
  • The Insider can ask questions to guide the players, but they have to be careful not to be too obvious.
  • The game proceeds until a player correctly asks, “Is it X?” The person who asked the final question is important to remember.
  • There is no limit to the number of questions, but they must all be asked within the time frame indicated by the hourglass.
  • If time runs out and nobody guesses correctly, then everyone loses.

Phase 4: Discuss

The judge turns the hourglass and starts the timer.

Players engage in conversation to uncover the identity of the insider. They might ask questions like, “Why did you ask that particular question?” or “John, your question seemed a bit suspicious. Can you explain?”

If desired, this phase can end before time runs out.

Phase 5: Voting for the Insider

Players should raise their hands if they believe the person who successfully identified the subject is the insider. The judge also votes.

The player who guessed correctly reveals their role.

Raised hands are the majority?
Yes
No
Was it the infiltrator? The judge and commons win The infiltrator wins
Was it a citizen? The insider wins To vote

Phase 6: Vote

  • All players, including those who guessed correctly, point simultaneously to the person they believe is the infiltrator.
  • If there’s a tie between two players, the individual who identified the theme resolves which side has the majority.

Does the player with the most votes become the infiltrator?

  • Yes, in which case the judge and commons emerge victorious.
  • No, in which case the infiltrator prevails.
