Westcliff – learn to play with

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Westcliff!

Hey there! Let me introduce you to Westcliff, a fun and fast solitaire game that gives you a 90% chance of winning. We’ve made it super easy for you! We’ll deal out the cards, set up the foundations, and all you have to do is play your cards right. But remember, there are no second chances in this game!

The Cards and the Layout

Alright, let’s get started! Grab a standard deck of 52 French cards, give them a good shuffle, and let’s begin. We’ll deal out ten rows of cards, with each row having three cards. The first two cards in each row are facedown, and the last card in each row is faced up. The remaining cards in the deck will be your draw pile.

THE PLAY

Hey there! Let me explain the rules of this cool card game to you. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!

So, in this game, we start with the Aces. They’re special and get moved to the foundation piles right from the start. The foundations are like little stacks, and we’re gonna build them up, one card at a time. The trick is to place the cards in ascending order, starting with the Ace and ending with the King. Can you follow along so far?

Now, let’s talk about the tableau columns. These are the columns of cards that are laid out on the table. We’ll be arranging them in a specific way. We want to have a descending order, going from King all the way down to Ace, and we’ll alternate the colors. That means red goes on black, and black goes on red. And here’s a cool thing – if the bottom card of a column can fit on top of another column’s card, you can pick up the whole column and move it there! You can also use a column to fill in an empty space if there’s one. Just grab it and slide it in.

Okay, there’s just one more thing to remember. Some cards start off face down, so you can’t see what they are. You’ll need to flip them over to find out! Once they’re uncovered, you can start moving them around like the other cards. Easy enough, right?

Well, that’s it for our little game lesson. I hope you’re excited to give it a try! Have fun playing!

To start playing, you need to draw cards one by one from the draw pile. You can play these cards on any tableau column or foundation as long as it’s a legal move. If you can’t play a card, you need to discard it face up onto the waste pile. The top card of the waste pile is always available for you to play on the tableau or foundations. You can also use cards from the draw and waste pile to start a new tableau column if there’s an empty space in the layout.

Now let’s talk about winning the game. You win when all the cards are placed correctly on the foundation piles. However, if you run out of cards in the draw pile before completing this task, unfortunately, you lose.
