Welcome to Taki!
Hey there! I’m here to introduce you to an awesome card game called Taki. It’s been around since 1983 and is known as an advanced version of Crazy 8’s. What sets Taki apart from other games like Eights and UNO are its cool and unique action cards. Unlike some other card games, Taki doesn’t focus on scoring points. Instead, it comes with a tournament format that adds a whole new level of excitement for players like you!
What’s in the Box?
When you open up the Taki box, you’ll find a deck of 116 cards and an instruction booklet. Pretty neat, right?
The deck includes two cards of each number for every color. So there’s a total of two green 7s, two blue 5s, and so on.
Each color also has two copies of some super special action cards. These include the Stop, +2, Change Direction, Plus, and Taki cards. But wait, there’s more! There are also colorless action cards like the SuperTaki, King, +3, and +3 Breaker. You’ll find two of each of these cards. And lastly, there are four Change Color cards that you’ll definitely want to watch out for. They can really mix things up!
Get Ready to Play!
Here’s what you need to do to start the game: Shuffle all the cards in the deck, and then give 8 cards to each player. The remaining cards should be placed facedown in the center of the table. The top card of the deck should be turned over and put face-up to create the discard pile. This top card is known as the Leading Card, and it kicks off the game.
How to Play
Hey there! So, let me explain how this game goes. It’s pretty simple, really. The youngest player gets to start and from there, it’s a race to get rid of all your cards.
Here’s how it works: on your turn, you have to pick a card from your hand and place it on top of the discard pile. But wait, there’s a catch! The card you play has to either match the color or symbol of the card on top of the pile, called the Leading Card.
Now, there are some special action cards that don’t have a color at all. These cards can be played on your turn, without having to worry about matching the color or symbol. Pretty cool, right?
But sometimes, you might find yourself in a pickle. If you don’t have a card that matches the Leading Card or an action card to play, you’ll have to draw a card from the draw pile. And here’s the thing, you can’t play that card until your next turn. Bummer!
Once you’ve played a card or drawn a new one, your turn is over. The play then passes to the player on your left, and everyone takes their turns like this until someone is left with just one card in their hand.
Last Card Standing
So, the game keeps going until one lucky player has just one card left. That’s when things get really intense! Everyone else is going to be watching your every move, waiting for you to slip up.
So make your moves wisely and keep your poker face on, because being the last card standing is the ultimate goal. Good luck!
Hey there! When I’m playing a card game, if I only have one card left in my hand, I gotta shout out “last card” before the next person takes their turn. If I forget to do that, I have to pick up four more cards as a penalty. Bummer!
Let’s Wrap it Up
The game is all done when someone gets rid of all their cards. Woohoo!
Special Cards
STOP – The person after you doesn’t get a turn. Sorry, buddy!
+2 – The next player has to pick up two cards from the draw pile and lose their turn. Ouch! If they have their own +2 card, they can pile it on so the next person picks up even more cards. That stack can keep growing until someone can’t add to it anymore. Then they have to pick up all the cards in the stack and miss their turn too. Talk about bad luck!
CHANGE UP – This card mixes up the game by changing the direction of play.
MIX IT UP – You can play this card on top of any card that’s not an active +2 stack or +3. You get to choose the color that the next player has to match.
UNLEASH THE POWER OF TAKI – When you play a TAKI card, you don’t just play one card – you play all the cards of the same color from your hand! And here’s the catch – once you’ve played them all, you have to say “closed TAKI”. But if you forget to announce it, the next player can keep using the TAKI. The open TAKI can be used until someone closes it or a card of a different color is played.
Oh, and by the way, action cards in the TAKI run don’t activate. But, if the final card in the TAKI run is an action card, you still have to carry out the action! So be prepared for some surprising twists and turns.
If you play a TAKI card by itself, you can’t close it. The next person gets to play all the cards of the same color from their hand and close the TAKI.
A wild TAKI card, called Super Taki, automatically becomes the same color as the Leading Card. You can play it on any card except an active +2 or +3.
The King is a cancel card that can be played on top of any card, even an active +2 or +3 stack. The player who plays the King gets to play another card from their hand, any card they want.
If you play a Plus card, you have to play another card from your hand. If you can’t, you have to draw one from the pile and pass your turn.
When someone plays a +3 card, all the other players have to draw three cards.
Hey there! Let’s talk about the +3 Breaker. It’s a really cool card that’s all about defense. When someone plays a +3 card, you can use the +3 Breaker to cancel it out. This means that the person who played the +3 card has to draw three cards instead. Ouch!
Here’s the best part: anyone can play the +3 Breaker. Yup, it’s not limited to just one person. So if you have it in your hand, you can be the hero and save everyone from those extra cards.
Now, there’s a little catch. If it’s your turn and you decide to play the +3 Breaker, you can’t use it on an active +2 stack. That wouldn’t be fair, right? But don’t worry, you can still play it on any other card. Just keep in mind that if you do this, you’ll have to draw three cards as a penalty. But hey, sometimes you gotta take one for the team.
After the +3 Breaker is played, the next player has to follow the Leading Card that was under the +3 Breaker. So everyone needs to pay attention and stay on their toes.
