Welcome to Spit in the Ocean!

In Spit in the Ocean, you and your friends can play an exciting card game with 3 to 10 players. The goal of the game is to make and win bids.

Before we dive in, it’s important to have a general knowledge of how to play poker and understand poker hands.

Getting Started

In each round, there will be a dealer who may choose to play or not. It’s up to the group and the game environment.

The dealer will shuffle the cards and deal a 4-card hand to each player. Then, a single card is dealt face up in the center of the table. This card and any cards of the same rank are considered wild and can be played as any card.

Once the hands are dealt, it’s time for the bidding phase.

Card and Hand Rankings

Cards are ranked in a traditional way, starting with the Ace as the highest and going down to 2 as the lowest. This is the order: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.

When playing poker, the traditional ranking of hands is used. This determines the value of each combination of cards.

Now, let’s talk about the gameplay. Once the initial round of bidding is over, each player has the option to discard and replace any number of cards from their hand. Some people only allow the discarding and replacement of 2 cards.

After the new cards are dealt, another round of bidding begins. Once this round is done, the showdown happens.

During the showdown, the final round of bidding takes place. If more than one player is still in the game, they show their 4-card hand. These cards, combined with the central card, are used to determine who has the highest poker hand.

When it comes to playing Spit in the Ocean, the goal is simple: be the player with the highest hand at the table. That’s how you win the pot!

The End of the Game

Unlike most games, Spit in the Ocean doesn’t have a standard end. Players can come and go as they please, joining or leaving in between rounds of play.
