Welcome to the World of Skull King!
Skull King is a super cool card game from Grandpa Beck’s Games. It’s based on the classic game of Oh Heck, but Skull King takes things to a whole new level. Get ready for an exciting adventure!
Get to Know the Basics
In Skull King, you and your friends will be dealt a set of cards. Your goal is to predict how many tricks you’ll be able to win. If you meet your prediction, you’ll earn points. If you fall short, watch out, because you’ll lose points. But that’s not all! Brace yourself for the power of special cards like Pirates, Mermaids, Escapes, and the mighty Skull King himself.
The Deck
The deck consists of 56 cards divided into four suits: Parrots (green), Maps (purple), Treasure Chests (yellow), and Jolly Rogers (black). Each suit has 14 cards numbered from 1 to 14. The Jolly Roger suit always trumps the others, so be sure to pay attention to those tricky Jolly Rogers!
Amazing Special Cards
Guess what? This game has some super cool special cards! There are actually 14 of them! Let me tell you all about them.
Okay, let’s start with the lowest ranking cards, called Escapes. There are five of them, and unfortunately, they always lose the trick. Bummer, right? So, watch out for these tricky cards!
Now, let’s talk about the Pirates. These are the real winners! They always beat any numbered card, no matter what. So, if you have a Pirate card in your hand, victory is almost guaranteed!
These special cards add a whole new level of excitement and strategy to the game. They can completely change the course of the game, so you better be ready for some unexpected surprises!
So, grab a deck of cards, gather your friends, and let the fun begin! Are you ready to experience the awesomeness of these special cards? I know I am!
When you play Tigress, you have a choice to make – will you play her as an Escape or as a Pirate? It’s up to you to decide!
Yo ho ho mateys! Let me tell you about the Skull King, the baddest card in the entire deck. This card is the king of all the Pirates, and it doesn’t mess around. It’s got a power like no other, and it beats every single Pirate and numbered card that dares to challenge it.
Now, let’s talk about the Mermaids. They may not be as tough as the Skull King, but they’re still pretty cool. These underwater beauties can beat all the numbered cards and even the Skull King itself. But here’s the catch – they can’t stand up against any other Pirate card. So if you’re playing with these feisty ladies, you better watch out for those Pirates!
So that’s the deal with the Skull King, Pirates, and Mermaids. They’re all part of the same wild and crazy card game. The Skull King rules the seas, the Mermaids bring the magic of the ocean, and the Pirates add that extra spice of danger. It’s a game where anything can happen, and you never know who will come out on top.
Expansion Cards: Amp Up Your Game!
Hey there, fellow game enthusiasts! I’ve got some exciting news for you – let’s talk about expansion cards. Now, you might be wondering, “What exactly are expansion cards?” Well, my friend, they’re like a turbo boost for your game – they take your gaming experience to a whole new level!

They’re like a secret stash of extra action, waiting to be unleashed on your opponents. These cards, my friend, were designed to keep you on your toes and test your strategic skills to the max.
But what exactly do these expansion cards bring to the table? Great question! With these bad boys, you’ll find a whole new set of rules to spice things up. They’ll introduce mind-boggling twists and unexpected turns that will leave your opponents scratching their heads in awe.
Now, let’s talk about the legendary Kraken card. Oh boy, this one’s a game-changer! When the Kraken card enters the scene, it unleashes chaos like no other. Brace yourself, because when this sea monster makes its grand appearance, things get crazy. The trick that the Kraken card is played to? Poof! Gone in an instant. No winners, no losers, just a clean slate for the next trick. But hey, don’t worry – you know what they say, when one door closes, another one opens. So get ready to forge your path to victory once more!
So, my friend, if you’re looking to ramp up the excitement and take your game to uncharted territories, expansion cards are your best bet. They’re the ultimate game-changer, injecting a burst of exhilaration into your gaming sessions. Get ready to explore new strategies, outwit your opponents, and come out on top. Your gaming adventures will never be the same again!
When I play the White Whale card, something really interesting happens to the trick. Any special cards that are played alongside the White Whale automatically become Escape cards. It’s like they’re trying to get away! And all the numbered cards in the trick lose their regular suits and turn completely white with fear! How cool is that?
So, after all the cards have been played, the trick is won by the player who played the highest numbered card. But what happens if two or more players played the same highest numbered card? Well, in that case, the player who played it first gets the win. It’s all about timing!
Now, here’s a twist. If the trick is made up entirely of special cards, like the White Whale and other special cards, then there’s no winner. The trick is just discarded, and we move on to the next one. But here’s the best part – the player who played the White Whale gets to lead the next trick. That’s a pretty awesome advantage, don’t you think?
Oh, and let’s not forget about the Kraken. If both the White Whale and the Kraken end up in the same trick, it’s the Kraken that wins. Sorry, White Whale, but the Kraken’s got you beat this time.
Did you know that the expansion I’m talking about also comes with something extra? Yup, it includes not just one, but two Loot cards. And here’s the cool part: when a player plays a Loot card and another player captures it, they become allies for that round. It’s like finding a secret treasure that brings people together. To add to the excitement, each player gets a whopping 20 bonus points if they meet their bid. But wait, there’s more! If all the other cards in the trick turn out to be escapes, the player who played the Loot card wins, no alliance necessary. See? It’s like a twist in the tale, adding even more edge to the game. So, what will you do with these new possibilities?

Getting Started: A Guide to Playing Skull King
Hey there! Welcome to this guide on how to play the thrilling card game, Skull King. Get ready for an epic adventure on the high seas! But before we dive in, let me explain the setup and basic rules of the base game. We won’t be using the Kraken, White Whale, or Loot cards this time. If you want to explore the additional rules and different ways to play, I recommend visiting Grandpa Beck’s website.
First things first, let’s remove the Kraken, White Whale, Loot Cards, and blank cards from the deck. After that, make sure each player has a set of bid reminder cards and player aids handy.
Skull King is played over ten exciting rounds. The number of cards dealt varies in each round. For the first round, shuffle the deck and deal one card to each player. The rest of the deck goes face down to the side.
Now, it’s time to decide who will keep track of bids and scores. Give that person a scorepad, and they’ll take on this important role throughout the game.
Remember, the deal will pass to the left after each round. So, everyone will get a chance to be the dealer and make some strategic moves!
THE BID
Let’s start by bidding on the number of tricks we each think we can take. When it’s time to reveal our bids, we’ll pound the table three times, saying “yo ho ho” on each pound. On the third pound, we show our bid using our fingers. If our bid is more than 5, we simply say the number. The scorekeeper will write down our bids, and we can also use bid reminder cards to keep track.
THE PLAY
So, let me tell you about this cool card game trick. It all starts with the player sitting on the left side of the dealer. They get to pick any card they want from their hand to play. And the fun doesn’t stop there! The next player, who’s sitting to the left of the first player, has two options. They can either play a card of the same suit as the first player or play a special card. But don’t worry, if they don’t have a card of the same suit, they can still play any card they want. No pressure! Oh, and remember, you only have to play a special card if that’s all you have left in your hand. Now, here’s the exciting part – the player with the fanciest, highest-ranking card wins the trick! And guess what? They get to lead the next trick. How cool is that? This keeps going until all the tricks for the round are done. Can you handle all the excitement?
THE POWER OF SPECIAL CARDS
If you want to win the trick, you need the right cards. Here’s how it works: if all the cards in the trick are numbered and match the lead suit, the highest ranking card wins. But if there are any black Jolly Roger cards (those are the trump cards), the highest ranking black card takes the trick.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Escape cards always lose, unless every player has played one. In that special case, the first player to play the Escape card, including the Tigress, wins the trick.
But wait, there’s more! The Pirate cards are the big bosses. They beat all the numbered cards, even the trump cards. And guess what? The Tigress can be played as either a Pirate or an Escape card. If more than one Pirate card is played, the player who played it first wins the trick. It’s a race to be the first Pirate!
Ahoy there, mateys! Allow me to share with ye the secret knowledge of the high seas! The Skull King, he be the grandest pirate of ’em all, holdin’ the top spot in the hierarchy of pirates. No other pirate card nor numbered card can stand against this mighty buccaneer. But hold yer horses, me hearties, for there be a catch! The Skull King can only be outdone by one type of card, and that be the enchantin’ Mermaid.
Now, listen closely, me fellow sailors, for the Mermaids be holdin’ their own set of rules. These mystical creatures have the power to overcome any numbered card, but beware! They be no match for the treacherous Pirate cards, ‘cept for the Skull King himself. Picture this, me mateys: if both Mermaids be played in a trick, and they both be triumphant, the first scallywag to play a Mermaid card be declared the victor. But, if a Pirate, the Skull King, and a Mermaid clash in a battle of wits, then the Mermaid be the ultimate conqueror.
Now, let’s delve into the unique powers of special cards:
When ye kick off a trick with an Escape card, the followin’ card ye play, one of the regular suited ones, sets the path fer the rest of the trick. All ye landlubbers must follow suit!
But when ye lead with a Pirate (except for Tigress, who be a special case when she’s used as an Escape), a Mermaid, or, o’ course, the Skull King, there be no suit ye must follow. The rest o’ the scurvy dogs can play any card they fancy, arrr!
Alright, so here’s what you gotta do after we finish a round: first, add up the scores for each player. Then, collect all the cards and mix ’em up to make a new deck. Now, deal the cards to the left for the next round. Keep playing rounds until the game is done.
SCORES
When you make the number of tricks you said you would, you get 20 points for each trick. But, if you don’t make your bid, you lose 10 points for each trick you caught too many or too few.
If you bid zero tricks and catch zero tricks, you get points equal to ten times the number of cards you got dealt that round. But, if you fail to make your bid of zero, you lose points equal to ten times the number of cards you got dealt that round.
When you’re playing this game, meeting your bid can lead to earning some bonus points. But if you don’t meet your bid, you won’t score any bonus points. The yellow, purple, and green 14 cards are worth an extra 10 points if you catch them. And if you manage to capture the black 14, you’ll earn an additional 20 points.
If you use a Pirate card to capture a Mermaid, you’ll get a nice bonus of 20 points. And if you manage to capture the Skull King with a Mermaid, you’ll earn a whopping 40 bonus points. But remember, capturing a Pirate with the Skull King will only give you 30 bonus points.
WINNING
The player with the highest score at the end of the game is the winner.
