SKIP-BO RULES
Welcome to the exciting world of Skip-Bo! It’s a fast-paced party game that will keep you on your toes. Your goal is to create building piles by stacking cards in ascending order, based on their numbers.
Now, don’t get overwhelmed because there’s a limit. Each player can only have four building piles at a time. And let me tell you, it can easily become overwhelming even with just four piles!
Your mission is to deplete your stock pile as quickly as possible. But here’s the catch: you might have some not-so-great cards taking up space in your hand, making it ridiculously difficult to achieve your goal in no time.
Don’t worry though, because Skip-Bo cards will be your secret weapon! If you can’t find the number you need, these special cards can be used to substitute for any number. They can be a real lifesaver in the game.
Game Setup
Let’s get started by shuffling all the cards together. Then, each of us will draw a card from the deck. The player who draws the highest card will be the dealer.
If we have between two to four players, the dealer will give each of us thirty cards. But if we have five or more players, we’ll each get twenty cards.
Now, we’ll keep our cards face down to create our stock pile. Let’s flip the top card of our stock pile to start the game, making sure to leave the other cards untouched.
The remaining deck will be placed face down in the middle of the playing area.
Playing the Game
Description of the Stacks
As we play, each of us will have five stacks of cards.
A Pile of Cards
My stock pile, which is located on my right, always has the top card facing up.
The Pile of Cards to Draw From
Once all the cards have been dealt to everyone, any remaining cards are put in the center of the table. This pile, called the draw pile, is where you’ll get your cards from.
Creating Building Piles
I can create up to four building piles as I play the game. I can start a building pile with a 1 card or a Skip-Bo card.
So here’s how it works: I start off with twelve piles of cards, and I build them up from one to twelve in order. Once I finish a pile of twelve cards, I can take it out and start a new pile in its spot. It’s like a little game within the game, you know?
Discard Piles
Now, here’s where the discard piles come in. Each player can have up to four discard piles to the left of their main deck. You can put as many cards as you want into these piles, but you can only play the top card from each pile. It’s like having some backup options right there next to you.
So, here’s how the game starts. The person sitting on the left side of the dealer, that’s where it all begins. This player will start off by grabbing five cards from the draw pile.
Now, here’s something interesting. If this player happens to have a Skip-Bo card or a card with a number 1, either in their hand or on top of their stock pile, they have a special power. They can use that card to start a building pile. And the fun doesn’t stop there! They can keep adding cards to their building pile, but remember, they have to go in numerical order.
When I play all five cards in my hand, I get to draw five more. It’s like giving myself a second chance, and who doesn’t love that?
If I can’t play any more cards, my turn is over. I have to pick one card from my hand and add it to my discard pile. It’s tough to let go, but sometimes it’s the only way to keep the game going.
The fun keeps going around the group, with each player taking their turn to the left. We’re all in it together, and it’s exciting to see what the next player will do.
After the second turn, and for every turn after that, I can only draw as many cards as I need to bring my hand back up to five. It’s all about finding that perfect balance.
The ultimate goal is to be the player who plays all the cards in their stock pile. It’s like a victory dance, and it feels so good to win!
EPILOGUE
When someone finally uses up all the cards in their stock pile, that’s when the game comes to an end. They are the true champion, and they deserve all the credit.
If you want to keep the game going, you can play multiple rounds. In that case, the winner gets five points for each card left in their opponents’ stock piles, and twenty-five points for winning the game.
You can continue playing rounds until one player reaches five hundred points and becomes the winner.
