Welcome to the Stone Age!
Hey there! I’m here to tell you all about Paleo, an awesome cooperative board game set in the time of our ancestors. In this game, we’ll have to work together if we want to survive this tough, prehistoric world. Each of us will start with some humans who have their own special skills and a limited number of life points. Our goal is to complete a bunch of quests and, if we’re really successful, leave our mark on the cave wall for all future generations to see!
Ready to Get Started?
Let’s set up the game first. We need to divide the cards based on the symbols on the back of the cards. Then, we’ll place the game boards in the middle of our playing area and organize the resources around them. We should put five food tokens in the storage area on the base board. Next to the base board, we can set up the workbench and organize the tokens in front of it, separating them by type.
Okay, here’s what you need to do to get started with the game. First, shuffle the People, Dream, and Idea cards and place them face down on the base board in their designated areas. Then, take the Base cards and shuffle them as well. Now, deal the Base cards evenly to each player.
Once everyone has their cards, each player will draw two people from the deck and place them in front of them, facing up. These cards will form their individual groups. You’ll notice that some of the cards have tool tokens on them. These tokens indicate that the player needs to collect a specific type and quantity of tools. Once all the cards are set up, you’re ready to start the game!
How to Play
When the game starts, we enter the Day Phase. This is an exciting time when we get to uncover new things and make fascinating discoveries. Each player takes their turn simultaneously. We all have three cards facing down, so we have to pick one to look at. The rest of the cards go back into our decks. The backs of the cards give us a hint about what’s on them without revealing everything.
So, here’s how the game works: we all show our cards to each other, and then we each pick an option from our card to take the action that goes with it. After we’ve all made our choices, we’ll decide together which order to resolve the cards in. Once we’ve gone through all of our cards, the Day Phase will end, and we can finally rest our tired heads.
But wait! The Night Phase isn’t over yet. Now it’s time to make sure everyone in our group gets fed. Each person needs one piece of food from the storage area to the supply area. If we can’t feed everyone, they’ll go hungry and we’ll earn skull tokens for each unfed person. Those tokens go on the night board.
Once everyone finishes eating, we need to make a choice from the options presented on the mission cards. We can only choose actions that are marked with the moon symbol. It’s important to note that we can’t just ignore the mission cards; they stay in the game until stated otherwise.
To start a new day, we have to mix all the cards from the discard piles and place them back on the Wilderness board. After that, the cards are dealt to each player without anyone peeking at them. Once the dealing is done, the Night Phase ends and a new day starts. We keep playing like this until we either win or lose the game.
GAME OVER
The game can end in two different ways. First, if you and your friends are able to collect five victory tokens in total, you’ll win the game! This means you’ll complete your painting and leave your mark. It’s a great feeling to win together and celebrate your success.
However, there’s another outcome. If you end up collecting five skull tokens, then unfortunately, you won’t succeed. The game will end, and you won’t be able to complete your painting. It’s important to be careful and avoid those skull tokens to keep the game going.
