Nosedive – learn to play with

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to NOSEDIVE!

Get ready to earn social points and pass judgment on others. That’s what this game is all about! Social status is everything, so if you’re not willing to please everyone, you might end up losing it all. Just remember, you’ll need the Nosedive Board Game App to play.

Let’s Get Started

To begin, set up the game board in the middle of the group. Each player will then select a pawn and place it on the starting position of the board. Next, deal five cards to each player to create their hand. Put the cards near the board where everyone can reach them.

In the top right-hand corner of the board, you’ll find three Bonus Experience Tokens. Make sure they’re placed there. Finally, enter the player names and information into the Nosedive game app. Don’t worry, you only need one device, and it will be passed around during the game.

How to Play

So here’s how it works. First, the app assigns each player a social score at random. The player with the highest score becomes the Influencer and gets the Influencer Token.

Now, the game has three rounds, divided into two phases. In the first phase, called the Lifestyle Phase, the Influencer draws a certain number of cards – the same number as there are players. They place the cards face down next to the board, but choose two cards to place face up. Quite the strategy!

After that, each player takes their turn. To start, the Influencer places one Bonus Experiences Token face up in a special spot on the board. Then it’s your turn to move on the board and do whatever action is shown on the space you land on. But here’s the catch: if you move to a space where another player is, you have to give them one of your cards before you can go there.

Once the Lifestyle Phase has wrapped up and all available Bonus Experience Tokens have been claimed, the Experience Phase comes into play. It’s my turn now, and I gotta say, things are about to get interesting! First off, each player grabs a stack of cards, starting with the one with the lowest social score and ending with the highest. We plop them down right in front of us, faceup for everyone to see.

Now here comes the cool part. The app kicks in and asks us all who managed to snag those sweet Double Damage cards or Bonus Experience Tokens. If you snagged any of those, go ahead and remove them from your playing area once you’re logged into the app. Nice work, by the way!

Alright, now that we’re all set up, the app will guide us through the experience-giving process. It’ll prompt each of us individually to give an experience to another player. You know, like a little token of appreciation. But here’s the twist: we rate those experiences in secret! Suspenseful, right? Once we’ve given out our experiences, we can discuss them if we feel like it. It’s a chance to share some thoughts and maybe even learn a thing or two.

Hey there! Let’s talk about something pretty cool – social scores. They can make a big difference in your gaming experience. So, here’s the deal: when you give players awesome experiences, your social score goes up. But if you give them not-so-great experiences, your score goes down. It’s all about making people happy!

Now, if a player who has a higher social score than you ends up liking your experience, your score will go up even more compared to if someone with a lower social score likes it. So, it’s kind of like a popularity contest, but in a good way!

Once three rounds have been played, it’s time to see who’s on top. You start by getting rid of any lifestyle cards that have more stars than your social score. Then, you earn one point for each star you have, plus two extra points for each complete set of cards. But be careful – there are penalty cards that can subtract points from your total.

Let’s talk about action spaces now. They are super important!

With One down, you can take a lifestyle card and place it facedown on a pile of your choice. Just make sure the lifestyle points are showing for everyone to see.

One up/One down is a move where you place two cards from your hand on two different piles. One card goes face up, and the other goes face down. This move allows you to strategize and make a thoughtful decision. Draw two is another move that requires you to draw two cards from the lifestyle deck. This move gives you the opportunity to expand your options and plan your next move wisely.

Another move is Draw one/One up, where you draw one card and place another card on a pile, face up. This move combines drawing and playing a card, allowing you to build your strategy and adapt to the game.

Two Up is a move that allows you to play two cards, both face up, on two separate piles. This move gives you the chance to quickly play multiple cards and potentially boost your advantage.

If you come across a Plus One Experience opportunity, take it! You’ll receive a Bonus Experience Token that can come in handy during the game. This token can provide you with an advantage or help you overcome challenges.

When the game reaches its end, after three rounds, it’s time to tally up the scores. The player with the highest points is declared the winner and can revel in their victory. So give it your all and strive to achieve the highest score possible. Good luck!
