NESSOS
Hey there! I’m really excited to tell you about this awesome game called NESSOS, where you get to be a Greek hero and try to impress the gods to become their chosen one. How cool is that? You’ll even get to gift them things like amphoras filled with mythical creatures. But be careful, because there’s this scary character named Charon who might send you straight to Hell if you mess up!
SETUP
Now, let me explain how the game setup works. The number of cards you use will depend on how many players are in the game. If there are three players, we’ll leave out the cards with the numbers 8, 6, and 4, as well as 4 Charon cards. With four players, we’ll remove the card with the number 6 and one Charon card. And finally, if there are five or six players, we’ll use all of the cards.
In the game of Amphora, we start by shuffling all the cards and dealing five to each player. The remaining cards go in the middle to create the draw pile. To determine the first player, we randomly select someone from the group and give them the starter player pawn. And now, we’re ready to begin!
How to Play Amphora: The Basics
To play Amphora, we go through several rounds until one of the game-ending conditions is met. The player with the starter player pawn starts by choosing a card from their hand and placing it in front of another player as an offering. If the card happens to be a Creature card, the player must honestly announce the card’s number. However, if it’s a Charon card, they should try to deceive others by announcing a false number.
When someone offers me a card, I have a few choices to make. I can accept the card without looking at it, or I can refuse the card without looking at it. Another option is to add one of my own cards to the offer and pass it on to another player. However, I cannot offer cards to players who have already been offered cards in the current round. If I am the last player to be offered the cards, I can choose to accept them or decline them.
If I decide to accept the cards, I flip them over in front of me and the round comes to an end. Depending on the situation, I may reveal multiple cards at once. After tallying my points, if I have reached the required number of points, the game is over. However, if I collect three Charon cards, I am immediately sent to Hell.
When a round of the game ends and it’s not over, those who have less than five cards will draw enough to have five in hand. I rotate the starting player pawn to the left, and then it’s my turn to start the new round. We keep playing like this until the game ends.
END OF THE GAME
The game can end in three ways. If the value of my cards goes over the required points, I win. If there are only two of us playing and one gets eliminated, the other person wins. D
If there are nine Charon cards facing up on the table at any point during the game, it will end right away. Then we’ll add up our points to see who wins. The winner is the player with the most points. If there’s a tie, the winner is the player who has the most cards.
