MYSTERY EXPRESS

Once I step aboard the Mystery Express, a shocking crime takes place right before my eyes. From that moment on, the entire journey becomes a thrilling quest to unravel the secrets behind the why, who, what, when, and where of the gruesome incident. This game is an absolute delight for those who have a knack for deep thinking and love to analyze every detail. As a player, I’ll need to employ my deductive skills, gather information from fellow passengers, and take investigative actions to piece together the truth and solve the enigma onboard the Mystery Express.

SETUP

Let’s kick off the game by placing the map right at the center of the playing area. Now, it’s time for each of us to choose a character that we’ll be representing throughout the game. Grab your character figure, character token, and ticket wallet that matches your chosen character. Keep in mind that each player will also receive a deduction sheet that must be safely stored within their ticket wallet for the duration of the game.

When you play this game, you get to decide where your character starts. You receive a blank Telegram, which you’ll use later. There are five Crime card decks that need to be shuffled separately. You take one card from each deck and place them below the map.

The time cards go beside the map, face down. The other decks can be mixed together to make one big deck. Each player gets dealt seven cards, one at a time. Once you have all seven cards, you can look at your hand. The rest of the deck goes in its designated spot on the board. The number of cards will be different depending on how many people are playing.

Alright, folks! The Mystery Express is about to embark on a grand adventure, starting in the beautiful city of Paris. That’s where our train will be positioned and ready to go. Now, here’s how we’ll kick things off: on every station, we’ll randomly place one conductor card. The first player to hop on board will place their token in the train car indicated by the card. Easy, right?

Now, let’s talk passengers. We’ll have two passenger tokens waiting for you in Strasbourg and Wien. So, be sure not to miss them! Oh, and don’t forget the miniature whistle. The player who boards the train last will begin the game and claim that little treasure.

Okay, listen up! Once the game starts, we’re going to keep things moving clockwise around the board. Make sure you’re paying attention to whose turn it is, and get ready for some thrilling detective work!

GAMEPLAY

Alright, here’s the deal. Each section of the journey on the map represents one turn in the game. Got it? Good. During each turn, you and your fellow players will have the chance to take actions and continue your investigation. It’s all about making the most of your time at each stop.

When I’m playing the game, I get to have my turn. I can move to a different train car, do whatever action I want, and even talk to the conductor if I did my action in their car. Once everyone finishes their turn, the Mystery Express moves on to the next stop. Each section of the train has a symbol that shows the amount of time we have at that stop. We need to make sure there’s a conductor at each stop because there’s a token there.

When you’re playing in Strasbourg, Wien, or Budapest, it’s up to you to figure out the Hour of the Crime. You’ll get a quick look at some time cards, and your job is to piece together exactly when the crime took place. It’s important to do this before anything else happens in the city. As you move through the different stops, you’ll have the chance to take different actions, some of which are required. During these activities, you can put your deduction skills to work and uncover more information about the crime.
