Welcome to La Politaine!
I am here to introduce you to an exciting game called La Politaine. It’s a game that you can play with four people, and the objective is simple: be the first partnership to reach 33 points and claim victory!
In this game, you will have two teams of two players each. You and your partner will sit across from each other, forming a strong alliance.
Let’s Get Started!
Before we begin, we need to prepare the deck. We will remove all cards numbered 6 and below, leaving us with a deck of 32 cards.
Now, let’s determine the first dealer. It will be chosen randomly, and after each round, the dealer position will rotate to the left.
Once the deck is ready, the dealer will shuffle the cards and deal eight cards to each player in a clockwise manner. It’s important to check your hand right away, as there’s a special rule. If you happen to receive all four 7s in one deal, you automatically win the entire game!
If my hand doesn’t have any 10s, 9s, or aces, I can ask for a redo before the first card is played. The dealer will reshuffle and deal again after making sure my hand doesn’t contain any of those cards.
Card Rankings and Values
Here’s how the cards are ranked: 10 (highest), 9, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 8, and 7 (lowest). There are no trumps in La Politaine.
Some cards have scoring values. Aces are worth 1 point, while 10s, 9s, Kings, Queens, and Jacks are each worth 1/3 of a point. 8s and 7s have no value, and the last trick is worth 1 point.
In each round, there’s a total of 11 points, and any fractional points are ignored.
GAMEPLAY
Playing La Politaine is easy. It’s just about leading and following tricks. The game starts with the player next to the dealer and goes clockwise.
The first player leads the trick, and everyone else has to follow suit if they can. If they can’t, they can play any card they want.
The player with the highest-ranked card of the leading suit wins the trick and gets to lead the next one.
In each round, there’s a special bonus you can win. If you have three of the highest-ranked cards in the same suit and win three consecutive tricks with them, your team gets 11 extra points. You have to announce your intention when playing the first of the three cards in the first trick. This bonus is called a Politaine.
When playing the game, I have the ability to communicate with my partner using signals. There are two signals that I can use while playing. One is tapping the table after I play my card for the trick. This signal tells my partner that I have really good cards in the same suit as the card that was just played. I want my partner to lead this suit if possible. The second signal is sliding my card onto the table. This signal tells my partner that I have good cards in the same colored suit.
SCORING
After all the tricks have been played, it’s time to tally up the scores. Each player counts up the points from the cards they have won in the tricks. Then, a fraction of points are dropped from each team’s score. The two teams’ scores should always add up to 11. These scores are kept cumulatively throughout the game. The game ends when one team or both teams reach or exceed 33 points.
END OF GAME
Hey there! Let me break it down for you. The game keeps going until a team reaches 33 points or more. If only one team gets there, they win. But if both teams go over 33, the one with the higher total is the winner. Now, if both teams tie, they play an extra round to find a winner.
