KING OF TOKYO
Hey there! Are you ready to unleash your inner monster and wreak havoc in the city of Tokyo? Well, get ready, because in King of Tokyo, that’s exactly what we’ll be doing! As one of six monstrous contenders, our goal is simple: be the best monster in town, or if not, be the last one standing to claim the ultimate title of the King of Tokyo.
Now, here’s the deal. We’ll be using dice to determine our fate. With each roll, we’ll fight against other monsters, collect energy to power up, heal ourselves, and most importantly, gather points. But remember, time is of the essence! We need to act fast and strategically to be the first monster to reach 20 victory points or take down our opponents for good.
Welcome to King of Tokyo!
First things first, let’s get you set up and ready to play. You and your friends will each choose a cool monster to play as in this game. Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll need to set your life points, shown by the heart icon, to 10. Don’t worry, you’ll have a chance to increase your power as the game goes on!
Next, let’s make sure the game board is all set. Find a flat surface where everyone can reach it easily. Once you have the perfect spot, it’s time to shuffle the King of Tokyo cards and place them in the center of the board. This is where all the action will happen!
Once you’ve shuffled the deck, it’s time to deal the top three cards face up next to the board. Make sure to place the card tokens near them too. Now, gather all the green energy cubes and put them in the center. Keep the black dice within easy reach of everyone, but set aside the green dice for now – we’ll only need them if someone buys certain cards.
Learn How to Play
When playing this game, it’s important to understand the gameplay mechanics. Let’s dive in and learn how to play!
Rolling the Dice
During my turn, I have five phases to complete. Starting with phase one, I need to roll the set of six black dice that come with the game. I can roll these dice up to three times, but I can choose to stop rolling at any point after the first roll.
Once the dice have been rolled, I have the option to reroll any number of dice I want, up to three times in total. After the third roll, all dice are locked in, and I have to take action based on the results.
Resolving the Dice
Now it’s time to resolve the dice I rolled. I can resolve them in any order, but I must resolve all of them if possible. Each symbol on the dice represents a specific action I must take. Let’s go over the possible actions:
- The sword symbol: This action allows me to attack an opponent’s character.
- The shield symbol: This action lets me defend my own character from an opponent’s attack.
- The heart symbol: This action allows me to heal my character, gaining back lost health points.
- The star symbol: This action grants me bonus points or special abilities.
- The coin symbol: This action lets me collect in-game currency or resources.
Remember, it’s important to carefully consider the results of my dice rolls and prioritize my actions based on the current game situation. Good luck and have fun playing!
Earning Victory Points
When I roll the dice and get three of the same number, I earn victory points equal to the value of that number. But it doesn’t stop there! For each additional same number I roll, I gain an extra victory point. So, if I roll three threes, I get 3 victory points. And if I roll 4 threes, I earn 4 victory points!
Gaining Energy
Now let’s talk about the energy symbol, which is a little green lightning. When I roll this symbol, I receive a number of energy cubes equal to the number of energy symbols I rolled. For example, if I roll three energy symbols, I receive three energy cubes. These cubes stay in front of me until I use them to buy cards from the market.
Smashing It
If you roll a smash symbol, which is like a monster hand, any monsters not in the same place as you will lose one heart for each smash symbol you rolled. Let’s say you’re in Tokyo and you roll 3 smash symbols. In that case, all monsters who are not in Tokyo will lose three hearts.
If you’re not in Tokyo and you roll a smash symbol, each monster in Tokyo will lose that many hearts. They might decide to give up Tokyo or stay. If they give up, your monster will take their place in Tokyo. And if you’re the first monster to roll a smash symbol in the game, you won’t do any damage because there shouldn’t be any monsters in Tokyo yet. But your monster will still have to move into Tokyo.
If a monster loses all their hearts, a skull will appear on their character card. They’ll lose all their energy cubes and cards that they bought during the game.
Hearts
If you’re not in Tokyo, you can gain one heart for every heart symbol you roll. Monsters in Tokyo can’t gain hearts from rolling heart symbols. And you can’t have more than 10 hearts.
Entering Tokyo
Hey there! Let’s dive into the next part of the game – entering Tokyo! If nobody’s there yet, it’s your chance to claim it as your own. At the start of the game, the first player gets to move into Tokyo. Oh, and in games with 5 or 6 players, there’s also Tokyo Bay. If it’s empty, the next player has to enter it. But don’t worry, you can only leave Tokyo or Tokyo Bay if you lose a heart. And if that happens, you can hand over the city to the player who did the damage.
Market Phase
Now, onto the market phase! Here’s where you can use your stored energy cubes to buy some cool cards. Look at the top of the cards to see how many cubes you need to spend to get them. It’s like a little shopping spree just for you!
When you buy a card, a new one immediately takes its place. You can also spend 2 energy cubes to sweep all three cards into the discard pile and reveal new ones. As long as you have energy cubes, you can keep buying or sweeping cards.
End of your turn
Before you pass your turn, don’t forget to check your power cards. Some of them activate when your turn is over. If you’ve completed all the actions mentioned above, you can pass your turn to the next player.
The game’s end
The game ends either when a monster reaches 20 Victory points or when there’s only one monster left. The first player who achieves one of these goals becomes the King of Tokyo.
