HAPPY FAMILIES
When we play Happy Families, someone becomes the dealer and gives each of us 7 cards. The rest of the deck becomes our draw pile.
LEARNING HOW TO PLAY HAPPY FAMILIES
So, you want to learn how to play Happy Families? Well, I’m here to help you out! Let’s dive right into it.
First things first, the youngest player gets the honor of starting the game. It’s your time to shine! Now, pay attention because this is where the fun begins.
The first step is for you to ask any player of your choice for a specific card. For example, let’s say you’re looking for the son in the Magician family. You would say, “Hey, do you have the son card from the Magician family?”
Now, brace yourself for the response! If the player you asked actually has the card you’re looking for, then they must give it to you. Congratulations! You’ve successfully made a match and added a card to your collection.
However, if the player you asked doesn’t have the card, don’t worry. They simply say “Draw,” and it’s time for you to draw a card from the deck. Keep your hopes up, because luck might just be on your side!
Remember, the goal of the game is to collect as many complete families as you can. Families are formed by finding all four cards of the same family, like the Magician family we mentioned earlier.
Now that you know the basics, it’s time to put your skills to the test. Gather your friends and family, grab a deck of Happy Families cards, and let the games begin. Good luck, and may the best family win!
If I happen to draw the card I wanted while drawing, I’ll shout “Good draw!” and get to play again. I can ask for another card from the same player or even a different player. But if I don’t get the card I asked for, I’ll say “Bad draw!” and my turn is over. In that case, the player who couldn’t give me the card I wanted gets a chance to take their turn and ask for a card of their choice.
But wait! There’s a catch. I can only ask for a card from a family if I already have one of that same family in my hand.
If I manage to collect all 6 cards of a family, I’ll proudly shout “Family!” and place the complete family in front of me, with the cards facing up. When that happens, it’s the player to my left’s turn to take their chance.
If the draw pile is empty, you don’t need to draw any more cards when you can’t get the card you asked for. Keep playing without drawing until no one has any cards left.
HOW TO WIN
Once all the sets of cards are completed, count how many sets each player has. The player with the most sets at the end of the game is the winner.
VARIATIONS
Depending on how old you and your friends are, you might want to make the game a little easier and faster by taking out the grandma and grandpa cards. If you do this, just give each player 5 cards to start.
And if you’re playing with more than 4 people, you should also give out fewer cards to each player. Otherwise, you’ll run out of cards really quickly!
