Hanaya game rules – how to play hanaya

Welcome to HANAYA

Hey there! I want to tell you about this cool game called Hanaya. It’s a fishing game that you can play with a friend. The game was designed by Louie Mantia Jr., and he used a special deck of cards called the Junior Hanafuda deck. So, let me explain how this game works!

In Hanaya, the goal is to capture cards from the center pond to earn points. But it’s not just about capturing cards – you can also earn extra points by forming special sets of cards called Yaku. That’s pretty awesome, right? And guess what? You can play this game for three, six, or even twelve rounds, depending on what you and your friend agree on at the beginning.

If you’re interested in checking out Louie’s Hanafuda cards and getting a PDF of the rules for Hanaya, you can visit his website. It’s definitely worth a look!

Let’s Talk About the Cards and the Deal

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. In Hanaya, we use a special deck of 48 cards. Each month has its own suit, so there are twelve suits in total. You can easily recognize the suits by looking at the symbols in the corners of the cards. It’s all part of the fun!

If you want to enjoy the game of Hanafuda, you should know about the different suits. Each month has its own suit. In January, it’s the Pine suit; in February, it’s the Plum Blossom suit; and so on. There are twelve suits in total, each representing a different month of the year.

Now, you don’t have to memorize all of the suits to play the game. It’s not necessary. But it does add to the overall experience and understanding of the game. Plus, it’s fun to know which suit corresponds to your birth month.

When playing Hanafuda, the dealer shuffles the cards and deals out five cards to their opponent and to themselves. Then, they place five cards face up in a row to create the pond. The remaining cards are put face down to form the stockpile. This is where the players draw cards from during the game.

THE GAME

Hey there! Let’s talk about this awesome game I’ve been playing lately. It’s called “The Play” and it’s super fun! In this game, the goal is to collect cards from the pond and score points.

Now, let’s dive into the details. There are four types of cards in “The Play”: flower, wish, spirit, and light. Each card has a different design, and you can check them out in the image below. How cool is that?

When you capture cards, you earn points based on their type. But that’s not all! There’s a special bonus called Yaku. Completing sets of cards, or Yaku, will earn you even more points. So, keep an eye out for those!

Playing “The Play” can be a real challenge. You have to strategize and make smart decisions to win. But trust me, it’s totally worth it. The excitement and satisfaction you feel when you score big points are simply amazing.

If you’re into card games, you’ll definitely love “The Play”. It’s a game that keeps you on your toes, and it never gets boring. So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try and experience the thrill for yourself!

When it’s my turn to play, I have three options: I can add, swap, or capture.

ADDING

If I choose to add, I can take a card from the pond and add it to my hand. Then, I replace that card with the top card from the stock.

SWAPPING

When I want to swap, I can take as many cards as I want from the pond. Then, I replace them with the same number of cards from my hand.

CAPTURING

If I decide to capture, I can place two or four cards of the same suit face up in front of me on the table.

I can’t hold more than seven cards at a time. If I start my turn with seven cards, I have to either swap or capture.

Once I finish my turn, it’s your turn to play. We keep taking turns until there aren’t enough cards left to refill the pond, and that’s when the round ends.

Let’s talk about scoring. The dealer changes every round. We keep playing until we reach the final round.

SCORING

We only earn points for the cards we capture, not the ones we have in our hand.

Each light card we capture is worth 20 points. Spirit cards are worth 10 points each. Wish cards are worth 5 points each, and Flower cards are worth 1 point each.

Completing a suit is worth 4 points.

Lastly, we tally up the Yaku points:

Having 3 Light cards earns us 5 points, plus 3 more points for each additional Light card.

Sake/Curtain is worth 2 points.

When it comes to scoring points in the game, there are a few different ways to earn them. Let me break it down for you:

First, we have Sake and Moon cards. These are worth 2 points each. So if you have a Sake card and a Moon card, that’s a total of 4 points.

Next, we have the Spirit Yaku. This consists of the Boar, Deer, and Butterflies cards. If you have all three of these cards, you earn 5 points.

Then, we have the Poetry Wishes and Blue Wishes. If you have 3 of either of these cards, you earn 5 points.

So, in summary, Sake and Moon cards are worth 2 points each, the Spirit Yaku is worth 5 points, and having 3 Poetry Wishes or 3 Blue Wishes is also worth 5 points. Keep these scoring rules in mind when playing the game!

Victory

When the final round is over, the player who has accumulated the highest number of points emerges as the winner. In the event of a tie, no additional measures are taken to determine a sole victor.
