A PIRATE’S ADVENTURE: FORGOTTEN WATERS

GETTING STARTED

Alright, let’s dive into the game! First things first, you’ll need to download the Forgotten Waters app. You can find it over here. Once you’ve got the app, open it up and choose the scenario you want to play. If you’ve got four players, make sure to include the Hungry Pirates card. If there are three of you, include the Masked Pirate card. Now, grab the location book and put it in the middle of the table so everyone can reach it.

First, we shuffle the treasure cards and place them on the side of the board, creating the treasure deck. Then, we take the navigation tokens and stack them face down. All the other game pieces are placed where they belong on the board. Each player gets a player sheet and a pencil, and each sheet has a unique title.

Next, we assign each player a role they’ll play throughout the game. Each role has different tasks to complete. We need to set up the scenario, following the step-by-step instructions provided by the application. Once we reach the bottom of the instructions page, we click “continue” and the game is ready to start.

GAMEPLAY

When playing the game, we go through multiple rounds that happen on different pages in the location book. Each round consists of three phases that we must complete in a specific order. First, we have the planning phase, followed by the action phase, and finally, the end-of-round phase.

During the planning phase, we, the players, get to decide which actions we want to take for the round. It’s important to make these decisions within the given time limit. If we run out of time before choosing our actions, the discontentment on the ship will increase by one level.

When the action phase begins, we, the players, get to carry out the actions we’ve chosen earlier in the game. Those who picked the first action go first, followed by those who picked the second action. However, everyone must finish their first action before they can attempt the second one. To fully complete an action, we need to follow all the instructions listed under that particular action.

Finally, to bring a round to a close, we have the end-of-round phase. Once we’re done with that, we check if we’ve met all the end-of-game requirements. Depending on the outcome, the game may either end or continue on to the next round of gameplay. And this is how we play until we reach the end!

THE END OF THE GAME

There are four different ways the game can end. If the ship’s hull reaches zero, we all drown and lose. If discontentment on the boat surpasses the crew, we have a mutiny, and everyone loses. When we reach the last threat, the game is over, and we all lose because we’re destroyed.

To win, we need to achieve our scenario goal. If we each complete four constellation events, we win. But if someone completes five constellation events, they achieve a superior victory. Once the game ends, we’ll consult our player sheets to see what actions our roles require.
