Materials Needed

Hey there! Let’s talk about Fluttering Souls, a really cool card game that I want to tell you all about. It’s got these amazing butterfly cards, a total of 21 of them. Isn’t that awesome? Now, these butterfly cards come in five different types. And guess what? Each type of butterfly has its own set of requirements, a point value, and even a special ability that you can use during the game.

Oh, and let me tell you about this special type of butterfly called the Eight Eight. It’s got something really unique going on. Wow! The Eight Eight butterfly is super special because it’s got double the requirements and double the point value compared to the other butterflies. That’s pretty amazing, right?

If you manage to collect two sets of Eighty-Eights, you will score two points for each set. Keep in mind that there are eight sets of Eighty-Eights in the deck.

Now, let’s talk about the Blue Morpho card.

Hey there! Did you know that there are six beautiful Blue Morphos butterflies in the deck? When you collect sets of three, you can earn 4 points for each set. How awesome is that?

Now, let’s talk about the Monarch butterfly. This majestic creature is a symbol of beauty and grace. When you spot a Monarch fluttering by, it’s a sight to behold!

Once the Great Eggfly is in place, the cards underneath become off-limits until it is removed. However, here’s the catch – the player who removes the Great Eggfly gets to keep and use the card on a future turn.

Layout Cards

First off, there are 15 layout cards in the game. Each round, we use one of these cards to decide how the cards are handed out. Pretty neat, huh?

Now, let’s talk about the cards themselves. The white ones are face up on the screen, so you can see them right away. But the black cards? Well, they’re a bit mysterious. They stay face down until it’s time to reveal them. It adds a certain element of surprise to the game!

Now, let’s move on to another exciting aspect: butterfly tokens. These little tokens play an important role. You’ll find out why.

After the round, whoever has the most points is declared the winner and is awarded a white butterfly token. Let’s talk about how to play the game.

GETTING STARTED

To begin, shuffle all the cards and place them face-down in the middle of the playing area. Each player should also have a set of cards in their hand.

OBJECT OF THE GAME

The goal is to collect as many sets of matching cards as possible to earn points. Each card has a different point value, so be sure to pay attention!

TURN ORDER

Decide who goes first by any method you prefer. Then, play proceeds clockwise around the table.

ON YOUR TURN

When it’s your turn, you have two options:

1. DRAW A CARD: Take the top card from the pile and add it to your hand. Be careful! This card might complete a set for one of your opponents.
2. PLAY A SET: If you have a set of matching cards in your hand, you can play them. To do this, place the cards face-up in front of you and announce the type of set you’ve played. For example, “I’m playing a set of butterflies!”

SCORING

After a set is played, all players count the total points of their remaining cards in their hand. The point values are listed on each card. The player with the highest total wins the round and earns a white butterfly token.

NEXT ROUND

After scoring, reshuffle all the played cards and the cards in the middle pile. Deal a new hand of cards to each player. The player who won the previous round goes first in the next round, and play continues as before.

WINNING THE GAME

The game ends when a player collects a set of white butterfly token and no more rounds are played. The player with the most white butterfly tokens is the overall winner of the game!

Before We Begin

Alright, let’s get started! First, we need to prepare the game setup. Take the layout cards and give them a good shuffle. Once shuffled, place the pile face down on the table. Now, turn over the top card. This card will show us how the butterfly cards will be distributed. Keep the butterfly tokens close by, we’ll need them later.

Now, separate the Great Eggfly from the rest of the butterfly deck. Next, take the remaining 20 cards and give them a shuffle. These cards will create the layout for this round. Remember, white cards should be face up, while black cards should be face down.

Before we start playing, let’s determine who will go first. The player who goes second will get to possess the Great Eggfly.

Your Turn, Your Move

Now that we have everything set up, it’s time to learn how to play. On your turn, you get to choose one card from the layout. But wait, there’s a catch! You can only pick cards that are completely uncovered. Keep an eye out for those.

Once you have chosen your card, any face down cards that become uncovered should be flipped face up. Now, it’s the next player’s turn.

I’m going to explain a game called “The Great Eggfly,” so get ready to have fun!

Here’s how it works: each player takes turns collecting cards until all of them are gone.

But there’s a special card called the Great Eggfly. If you have this card, you can play it right after you draw another card. But remember, if a face-down card becomes uncovered, you have to flip it face-up before playing the Great Eggfly. And you have to place the Great Eggfly exactly where the collected card was. It’s important to know that playing the Great Eggfly uses up your turn, but don’t worry, you can save it for later.

Now let’s talk about scoring:

When the round is over, each player adds up the points they earned from completed sets. Any butterfly that is not part of a completed set does not earn any points. Each Swallowtail butterfly is worth 2 points. The player with the most points at the end of the round wins a butterfly token. So keep collecting those butterflies and aim for the highest score!

When the round is over, the person who lost gets to choose who starts the next round.

If you can collect three butterfly tokens before anyone else, you win the whole game!
