The Five Point Set Back
Hey there, let me introduce you to the Five Point Set Back! It’s an exciting card game that can be played by four people. The objective of the game is simple – you and your partner need to score 12 points before your opponents do.
Now, before we dive in, let me explain how this game works. You and your partner will sit across from each other, forming a team. Your team will share a score throughout the game, so you’ll need to work together to win!
The Setup
To get started, we’ll need a special deck of cards. This deck has 28 cards, so we’ve removed all the cards from 3 to 8. This modification gives the game its unique twist.
Now, let’s talk about the dealer. The first dealer is chosen randomly, and then the dealer position rotates clockwise with each new deal.
Once we have our deck and dealer sorted, it’s time to distribute the cards! Each player will be dealt 6 cards from the shuffled deck.
Card Rankings and Point Values
In this game, the cards have rankings and point values. The suits are ranked in the following order: Ace (high), King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, and 2 (low). Keep these rankings in mind as you play.
During the game, there are certain cards or criteria that can earn you points. So, keep an eye out for those opportunities to score big!
When we play the card game, there are different ways to earn points. We can score points for playing high trump cards, low trump cards, winning tricks, and getting the jack of trumps. Let me explain how each of these works.
First, let’s talk about high and low scoring. If I have the highest trump card in play, my team gets 1 point. But if I have the lowest trump card in a trick, we also get 1 point. It’s all about playing the right cards at the right time.
Next, we have the game point. This point goes to the team with the most points overall. To earn points, we look at the cards we’ve won in tricks. Each ace is worth 4 points, each king is worth 3 points, each queen is worth 2 points, each jack is worth 1 point, and each 10 is worth a big 10 points!
And finally, we have the jack point. This point goes to the team that wins the jack of trumps in a trick. It’s a special card that can give us an extra point if we play it right.
So, in total, we can earn up to 4 points in a round. It’s important to strategize and think about which cards we play to maximize our points. Good luck!
Let’s Bid!
So, here’s how it goes: once we all have our hands, the bidding begins. The player to the left of the dealer starts, and each player takes turns bidding higher than the previous or passing. If you pass, you’re out of the bidding for that round. We’re bidding on how many points we think we can win in a round.
The lowest bid is 1, and the highest bid is 5. A bid of 5 means you have to win all four points and all six tricks as well – quite a feat!
If everyone else passes, the dealer has to make a bid of 1. But here’s a twist: the dealer can also “steal” the high bid by matching it.
The bidding ends when all but one player passes or someone makes a bid of 5. The winner of the bid becomes the high bidder.
Now, let’s talk about gameplay:
When we play a card game like this, there are certain steps we need to follow to keep things fair and exciting.
First, the person who bids the highest gets to choose which suit of cards will be the most powerful. They also get to play any card they want to start the game. The other players have to play a card of the same suit if they can, but if they don’t have one, they can play a card from the powerful suit or any other card they have.
The winner of each round is the person who played the most powerful card. That can be the most powerful card from the suit that was chosen, or if nobody played a powerful card, it can be the most powerful card from the suit that was first played.
After each round, we count up the points and see who is winning. It’s an important part of the game because it helps us keep track of who is doing the best.
SCORING
After each round, we look at the points to see who did the best.
When you place a bid, the outcome will determine whether you were successful or not. If you win the bid, you earn points equal to the number you bid. However, if you fail to win the bid, those points will be deducted from your score. It’s even possible to end up with a negative score. Don’t forget that the opposing team also benefits from any points they earn during the round.
Keep in mind that you can only win a bid of 5 if you manage to get all 4 points and win all 6 tricks. If you don’t meet these criteria, the bid fails. It’s also important to note that you can’t score a bid of 5 unless you actually bid it, regardless of whether you fulfill all the necessary requirements.
If the Jack of the trump suit isn’t dealt, you won’t be able to win that point.
End of the Game
The game continues until one team reaches a score of 12 or more. At that point, the team with the higher score wins.
