Dragon rampage game rules – how to play dragon rampage

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Dragon Rampage!

In this exciting game, you get to become an adventurer with unique abilities. You can choose to face off against a mighty dragon or run for your life. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to find valuable treasures and earn points. The player who collects the most points will be crowned the winner!

Let’s Get Started!

To set up the game, first, we need to shuffle the Dragon Rampage Deck and put it next to the gameboard. Each player places their movement token on the start space. The action dice are placed in the middle of the board, and the movement die is put beside the board. We also place hero wound tokens in a heap beside the board.

When playing this game, each player gets a set of hero character cards, action tokens, and a mat. I start by choosing my hero and then shuffling the rest of the cards to pick two more, so I have three cards in my hand. Then I’m given a 5-gold coin, and the rest of the gold goes in a supply pile next to the board. One of us is randomly chosen to get the starter tokens, and then we’re all set to start the game.

How to Play

The game is divided into rounds, and each round has three phases.

Phase 1

First, the starting player collects the action dice and rolls them. You can re-roll any dice up to two times. After you finish rolling, you put your action tokens in the correct box. Be careful – you can only put one token in each box. If you don’t have the right token, you have to use one with a lower value.

Phase 2

Once all the rolls and placing actions are finished, we move on to the dungeon phase. I flip a Dragon Rampage card. If the card doesn’t have a value, we immediately apply the effects. If it has two parts, we use the number of action tokens in the rampage box to determine which section to activate.

The player who has the highest number of action tokens in the action box will receive two wounds and draw a hero card. The player with the second highest number of action tokens will receive one wound. The player with the highest defense won’t receive any wounds. The player who has the most valuable action token in the craftiness box can steal from another player. If there is an action token in the grab treasure box, that player gets to draw two treasure cards.

The player with the highest action token in the attack dragon box gets to attack the dragon and can roll the dice twice. The player with the second highest action token gets one re-roll. During the attack, hitting the dragon with the action, shield, and hero symbols counts as a hit. It takes four to five hits to wound the dragon. The dragon can withstand wounds equal to five times the number of players.

Phase 3

Once all actions are done, everyone collects their action tokens. The starter player token and the re-roll token are passed to the player on the left, and a new turn begins.

END OF GAME

The game ends when a hero is killed, a hero escapes, or the dragon is defeated. After the game ends, scoring is done, and the scoring system can change depending on how the game ended.

Whenever a Hero gets hurt, I put a special token on my mat. It’s called a wound token. But here’s the thing: if I end up with more wounds than I have health icons, that means I’m done for. Game over. Bye-bye Hero.

Now, if I manage to move my hero token all the way to the exit, that’s a victory for me! The game ends, and I can celebrate my escape. And guess what? If I can do that, the dragon doesn’t stand a chance either. The game ends for both of us.

But things get really exciting when it comes to defeating the dragon. You see, if we manage to inflict five times as many wounds on that fire-breathing beast as there are players in the game, it’s curtains for the dragon. Victory! The game ends in triumph!

Now, let’s talk scoring. If my hero bites the dust, here’s how it goes down: I lose ten points because of my hero’s demise. And that’s not all. Each of my heroes with five wounds or more? They cost me another five points each. But hey, if I manage to slap a wound token on the dragon, that’s one point for me. And guess what? The more wound tokens I have on the dragon, the more points I rack up. I get five extra points for having the most wound tokens on the dragon, and three more if I’m the second in line. On top of that, I score seven points for having the most gold and four points if I’m the second highest. And let’s not forget about those treasure cards – they count too!

Now, if I manage to escape the dungeon, it’s time to tally some points. I’ll earn a solid ten points just for getting out of there alive. The hero right behind me? They get three points for their valiant effort. If I’ve managed to inflict some wounds on the dragon, that’s one point for each of them. And hey, if I’ve got the most gold, I earn seven extra points. Not too shabby. The second highest scorer gets four points too. And just like before, the treasure cards go into the mix.

But let’s not forget about taking down that menacing dragon. When we defeat it, here’s how the scoring goes: I earn one point for each wound token I’ve managed to put on the dragon. And remember when I mentioned those extra points for having the most or second most wound tokens on the dragon? Well, they’re still up for grabs. The player with the most gold? They get seven extra points. And the second highest? They earn four points. As always, treasure cards count. But there’s a twist: the player closest to the exit? They actually lose five points. Ouch. And the one right after them? They lose three points too.
