Boerenbridge game rules – how to play boerenbridge

By: Dennis B. B. Taylor

Welcome to Boerenbridge!

Boerenbridge is a fun card game for four players. The goal is to guess how many tricks you will win each round in order to score points.

The objective is to reach exactly 100 points. If you go over 100, any extra points will be subtracted from your score. You can only win if you have exactly 100 points at the end of a round.

Getting Started

To determine who goes first, each player will draw a card. The player with the highest-ranking card becomes the dealer. The deal then moves clockwise.

Once the cards are shuffled, each player will be dealt 13 cards, one at a time. The entire deck is used in each round, and there is no trump suit.

The ranking of the cards, from highest to lowest, is as follows: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.

Bidding

Before the tricks begin, we have what’s called bidding.

During bidding, each player simultaneously predicts how many tricks they think they can take with the hand they have. Everyone has to make a bid, even if it’s zero. A bid of zero means you don’t plan on winning any tricks. However, there’s a rule called the “hook” where the dealer cannot bid a number that would make the total number of bids equal to the total number of tricks available. This makes sure that someone always overbids or underbids. The dealer can change their bid until the first card is played.

If you have a score of 80 points or more, you don’t take part in the bidding. You only score points for the tricks you win.

GAMEPLAY

Okay, here’s the scoop. The game starts with me, sitting right next to the dealer. It’s my job to make the first move and I can choose any suit, even the special trump suit. After that, we all take turns going clockwise. Gotta play a card each time. If I can match the suit, I have to, but if I can’t, I can throw any card, trump or not. If nobody played a trump, the highest card from the starting suit wins the round.

The person who wins a round is in charge of starting the next one. We keep going like this until we finish all the rounds and all the cards have been played. Then we deal a new set of cards and do it all over again until everyone has played and won.

SCORE TIME

Before we begin, we need someone to keep track of the scores. It can be one of us or anyone else, really.

Here’s the deal with scoring. For each round I win, I get 1 point. But if I make a bid and actually win exactly that number of rounds, I score an extra 10 points. Pretty cool, huh?

When you successfully bid and win 0 tricks, you score 20 points. It’s a thrilling moment to win without taking any tricks!

If your score is already over 80 points, you don’t need to bid anymore. Instead, you still get the satisfaction of scoring 1 point for each trick you win. It’s like a little bonus for your skill!

But here’s the tricky part: if your score goes above 100 points, any extra points above 100 will actually bring your score down. So you need to be careful not to get too greedy!

The Exciting Conclusion

The game reaches its climax when a player’s score reaches exactly 100 points. That player becomes the ultimate champion!
