Playing Big Two

Designed for 2 to 4 players (or up to 8 players with a second deck), Big Two is played using a standard 52-card deck. The ranking of the cards goes as follows: 2 is the highest, followed by A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, and 3. Remember, the suits are also ranked, with Spades holding the highest position, followed by Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds.

The Goal

In Big Two, the goal is simple: shed all your cards before your opponents do. Each player starts with a hand of 13 cards, and the player who plays the highest-ranked combination of cards gets to start the game. When it’s time to start a game, the dealer is chosen by cutting the deck. This means that the deck is divided into two parts, and the value of the card on the bottom part determines who will be the dealer. If an ace is at the bottom, it’s counted as a 1. Counting goes in a counterclockwise direction, and the player who matches the rank of the card will become the dealer.

Once the dealer is chosen, each player is given 13 cards. The dealer begins dealing to their left, and the cards are passed around in a clockwise direction.

The player who has the 3 of Diamonds starts the game and also receives any leftover cards that weren’t distributed to other players. If no one has the 3 of Diamonds, the player with the next lowest card takes the lead and gets the remaining cards.

THE PLAY

So, here’s how the game goes: The person holding the lowest card has the honor of starting the first turn. That means they have to use their low card to kick things off. Now, there are a few ways you can play your cards:

• You can play a single card.
• You can play pairs.
• You can play triplets, also known as trips or three of a kind.
• And if you’re feeling lucky, you can even play a poker hand with five cards and their rankings.

But wait, there’s a twist! If you have a four of a kind, you can add a fifth card to make a full poker hand.

Now, here’s the catch: You have to beat the hand that was played before you. That means you need to play a hand of the same type, but with higher rankings. Let me give you an example to make things clearer. Let’s say the previous player played a three of a kind with three 3s. If you want to take the lead, you’ll need to play a three of a kind with a higher ranking, like three 5s.

And lastly, if you’re playing with single cards, you can beat them with higher ranking cards or cards of equal value but from higher-ranking suits. So, don’t be afraid to bring out your best cards!

When we play this game, we have the option to pass if we want or if we can’t make a move. Once everyone has passed, the last person to make a legal move starts the next round. They can play whatever type of move they want to start the next round.

Scoring System

After someone has played all their cards, the round is over. The winner gets 1 point for every card that the other players still have in their hands, and X^2 (X squared) points for every pair of cards they have left. For example, if the winner has four 2s in their hand, they get 16 points for those cards.
