An Introduction to Abyssinia
Welcome to Abyssinia, a thrilling twist on the classic Five Card Stud Poker. Unlike traditional poker games, where the cards remain hidden, Abyssinia introduces an exhilarating element where players’ hands are open and on display for all to see. However, one twist remains: the hole cards. These remain a secret until the final showdown, adding an extra layer of suspense and strategy to the game.
Abyssinia is a unique type of poker game similar to Buy Your Own Poker. In Abyssinia, you start the game with no cards and have the option to buy known or unknown cards to make a poker hand.

Now, let’s talk about how the game is played.
First, each player places their antes into the pot. Then, the dealer shuffles the deck and deals every player two cards face-down. Take a look at your cards and think about your strategy. After that, the dealer deals two more cards. These cards are placed to the side of the face-down deck. The upcard closest to the deck costs two units, while the upcard farthest from the deck costs one unit.
Let’s talk about a fun card game called Buying Poker. It’s a game where players take turns picking cards and making bets. Here’s how it works:
The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer. Each player can choose to either buy a face-up card or buy a card from the deck. The price of a card depends on its rank:
- 2-5: 2 units
- 6-K: 1 unit
- Ace: 4 units
If a player buys a card from the deck, it is dealt face-up so that everyone knows the price that was paid. If a face-up card is bought, it is replaced with a card from the deck.
The Betting
After each player has bought their first card, a round of betting takes place. The betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer. Players can choose to fold or buy one of the three cards available. This continues until all active players (those who have not folded) have five cards in their hand. The player with the highest ranking hand and the player with the lowest ranking hand share the pot.
Notes
When we play this game, we can choose to reveal our cards to everyone. After all, we all already know what cards everyone has. However, there is another way to play. We can choose to keep our cards hidden and create a secret hand. In this version, we have to announce if our hand is strong (high) or weak (low) before the final reveal.
