The 14-Point Tunkhannock Pitch Game

An Overview of the 14-Point Tunkhannock Pitch Game

Welcome to the 14-Point Tunkhannock Pitch game! It’s a fun card game that can be played with four players. The aim of the game is simple: be the first team to reach a score of 52 points before your opponents.

Now, you can play this game individually or as part of a team. If you’re playing with a partner, you’ll be sitting across from each other and working together to reach that winning score.

Setting Up the Game

First things first, we need to determine who the dealer is. We can do this by choosing someone at random, and then the role of dealer will pass to the left for each new round.

Once we have a dealer, we need to shuffle the deck of cards. Each player will then be dealt six cards to start the game.

Understanding Card Rankings and Point Values

Now let’s talk about the different ranks and point values of the cards. In this game, the trump suit is the most important. The cards in the trump suit are ranked as follows: Ace (highest), King, Queen, Jack, off-Jack, high Joker, low joker, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 (lowest).

It’s worth noting that the off-jack is a special card. It’s the jack of the same color as the trump jack, and it belongs to the trump suit. So keep an eye out for that card during the game!

When we play a bidding game, I win points by getting certain cards or meeting specific criteria. Let me explain how it works.

There are certain cards that give you points when you win them. These cards are the jack of trumps, the off-jack of trumps, and the High and Low jokers. Each of these cards is worth 1 point if your team wins them in a trick.

But that’s not all! There are also points for other things, like high, low, game, high spade, and last trick. Here’s what they mean:

– High: If your team has the highest trump card in play, you get 1 point.

– Low: If your team wins the trick with the lowest trump card in play, you get 1 point.

– Game: The team that scores the most points overall gets this point. I’ll explain more about this later.

– High Spade: If your team wins the trick with the highest spade card in play, you get 1 point.

– Last Trick: The team that wins the final trick of the game gets this point.

Let me talk a bit more about the game point. This is awarded to the team that scores the most points in total. So, it’s the big prize! It’s important to keep track of all these points because they determine who wins the game.

Now that you know how the scoring works, you can use these strategies to try and gather as many points as possible. Good luck!

When we play the game, we add up our scores based on the cards we win in each round. Each ace is worth 4 points, each king is worth 3 points, each queen is worth 2 points, each jack is worth 1 point, and each 10 is worth 10 points.

We should also keep track of the 5 of trumps, which is worth 5 points. The person who wins this card gets those points added to their score.

In total, there are 14 points available to win in each round of the game.

Bidding

Once everyone has their cards, we can start the bidding. The player to the left of the dealer goes first, and then each person takes turns bidding higher than the previous person or passing. Each player only gets one chance to bid. We bid on how many points we think we can win in the round.

The smallest bid we can make is 3 points, and the largest bid is called a smudge, which is 15 points.

If we make a smudge bid, our team needs to win all 14 points in the round and win all 6 tricks. It’s a big challenge, but if we pull it off, we get a lot of points!

If everyone else decides not to bid, then the person who is dealing has to make a bid of 3. The dealer can also take the highest bid by making a bid of the same value.

No more bidding can happen once the dealer either bids or passes, or if someone makes a bid of “smudge”. In the end, the person with the highest bid becomes the pitcher.

Once the bidding is done, the pitcher gets to choose the trump suit. Then, each player has to get rid of 3 cards and draw 3 new ones from the deck that hasn’t been dealt yet.

LET’S PLAY!

The pitcher goes first in the game. The game continues in a clockwise direction. The other players can either play the same suit as the lead card or play a trump card. If they don’t have the same suit, they can play a trump or any other card from their hand.

Winning a trick in a card game like Spades comes down to having the highest-ranked trump card, or if no trumps were played, the highest card of the suit that was led. Once a player wins a trick, they collect the cards and get to choose which card to play next to lead the next trick.

The round of the game continues until all six tricks are played.

Scoring

Scoring takes place after each round of the game.

After a round, it’s up to the pitcher’s team to determine whether they successfully completed their bid. If they were successful, they score the number of points they bid. However, if they were not successful, the number they bid is subtracted from their score. Keep in mind that it’s possible to have a negative score. The opposing team also earns any points they scored and adds them to their overall score.

If a smudge happens (which means the pitcher’s team won all 14 points and all 6 tricks), they score 15 points if successful, but lose 15 points if not.

GAME OVER

The game ends when one team scores 52 points or more, declaring them the winners.
