LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO 1000
1000, also known as Thousand, is a card game for 3 players. The goal of the game is to accumulate points throughout the hands and be the first player to reach 1000 points. This game is very popular in Eastern Europe, especially in Russia, where it is called Тысяча or Tysiacha.
THE PLAYERS & THE CARDS
I want to tell you about a game called 1000. It’s a fun game that you can play with three or four players. If there are four players, just make sure that one person takes turns sitting out on each hand.
In this game, you use a special deck of cards with only 24 cards. There are 6 cards from each suit. The cards have different point values, like this:
Ace: 11 points
Ten: 10 points
King: 4 points
Queen: 3 points
Jack: 2 points
Nine: 0 points
It’s important to know that there are a total of 120 points in the deck. So keep track of those points as you play!
Now, here’s an extra fun part of the game called “marriages.” This happens when a player has both a King and a Queen in their hand. If they declare it, they can get even more points! Here’s how many points each “marriage” is worth:
King & Queen of Hearts: 100 points
King & Queen of Diamonds: 80 points
Here are the points:
- King & Queen of Clubs: 60 points
- King & Queen of Spades: 40 points
How the Game Works
Let me explain how this game works. First off, we have to determine who goes first. It doesn’t really matter how we decide, as long as it’s fair. Then, we deal the cards one at a time to each of the three players until they each have seven cards. Now, pay attention to this part. We then deal three cards, face-down, to the center of the table. These special cards are called “Прикуп” or “prikup” if you want to be fancy. We also deal some cards to the prikup during the first three rounds of the game. We do this by dealing one card at a time, usually after the second or third card. Got it so far? Good!
How to Place a Bid
Alright, let’s talk about bidding. Bidding is when you make a guess about how many points you think you can win in a round. The lowest bid you can make is 100, and from there, you can increase your bid by five points (105, 110, 115, 120, and so on). It’s important to remember that the bid is just an estimate, and you have to try your best to win as many points as you can. Keep that in mind!
The bidding starts with the player on the left side of the dealer and moves around from there. Each bid has to be higher than the one before it. If a player passes, they can’t bid again. Bidding continues until everyone except one player has passed. That player becomes the declarer. You can’t bet more than 120 points because that’s the maximum in the deck. Also, you need to have a King-Queen pair to bid that high.
Next up is the exchange. The declarer shows the three prikup cards in the middle and adds them to their hand. Then, they get rid of two cards they don’t want, one to each opponent. Now, all three players should have 8 cards. The declarer has the option to increase their bid by multiples of five or stay with their current bid.
After the exchange, if a player is unfortunate enough to have four 9s in their hand, they can abandon that hand and get no points. The cards are shuffled and dealt again.
Finally, we come to the play.
Let me explain how the game of cards works. When we start playing, there are no special cards called trumps. The first person to play a trick is the one who declared it, and after that, each trick is led by the person who won the previous one.
Now, here’s an interesting rule: if someone has a pair of cards, one King and one Queen, they can announce it as a marriage. And guess what? They get to choose which card to play next! Oh, and the suit of that pair becomes the trump suit until another pair is played. But remember, you can only announce a marriage right after winning a trick, and you need to have both cards in your hand.
During each trick, it’s important to try your best to play a card from the same suit as the one that was led. But hey, if you don’t have any cards from that suit, or if you want to play a trump card, that’s totally fine too! You can play any card you like. To win a trick, you need to play the highest ranking trump card, or if there are no trumps, the highest ranking card in the suit that was led. And don’t forget, the tricks you’ve won are kept aside for scoring later on.
Now, let’s talk about scoring.
So here’s how it works: when we play the game, we keep track of the value of the cards we win in tricks, and any pairs of King and Queen that we declare. Each player starts with zero points and the goal is to be the first one to reach 1000 points. Now, to determine the points, we add up the values and round them to the nearest multiple of five. These rounded scores are then added to each player’s cumulative score.
Now, let’s talk bidding. If I’m the declarer and I manage to score at least the amount I bid, then that bid is added to my total score. However, if I fail to collect the amount I bid, then that bid is subtracted from my total score.
So, as you can see, bidding can either help you gain points or cost you points. It’s important to strategize and be careful with your bids. The goal is to reach 1000 points first and emerge as the winner. Good luck!
