During the Zombies Phase, you will witness the relentless advances of the undead. They will be on the move, ready to devour anything in their path. It’s crucial to understand how this phase works in order to strategize and outsmart these brain-hungry monsters.

First and foremost, the zombies will move towards the noisiest Survivor or the one with the fewest number of zombies in their zone. They are drawn to noise like moths to a flame. So, it’s imperative to keep a low profile and avoid attracting unnecessary attention.

When the zombies move, they will take the shortest path possible to reach their target. They are not particularly known for their intelligence, but they can certainly surprise you with their speed and numbers. Stay alert and be prepared for any unexpected surprises.

Another important aspect to consider is the spawning of new zombies. As the game progresses, you will notice that new zombies will appear on the board. These fresh entrants to the horde will be placed in designated spawn zones, and they will join the relentless pursuit of survivors.

You must also be aware of zombie activations. When it’s time for the zombies to attack, they will target the Survivors in their zone. These brain-hungry creatures will unleash their fury in an attempt to feast on your flesh. Stay vigilant and use your weapons wisely to fight them off.

Now that all the survivors have finished their turn, it’s time for the zombies to make their move. Unlike the survivors who are controlled by players, the zombies act on their own, following a specific set of steps:

Step 1 – Activation

Each individual zombie takes its turn and uses its available action to either attack or move, depending on what’s happening in the game. Keep in mind that the zombies will first resolve all their attacks before they move, but they can only either attack or move with one action.

Attack

When I’m in the same area as a Survivor, I get the chance to attack. And let me tell you, my attacks never miss – no need to roll any dice for that!

If a Survivor happens to be carrying an Equipment card, I’ll snatch it if I can. It’s up to the player controlling that Survivor to choose which Equipment card I take, and then they have to discard it. As a result, the Survivor gets a Wounded card instead, which takes the place of the lost Equipment.

Now, here’s something interesting. When the player organizes their Survivor’s inventory, they can move that Wounded card around, just like an Equipment card. But there are a couple of things that they can’t do with it – they can’t toss it out or trade it, and it limits how much Equipment the Survivor can carry.

Now, let’s talk about what happens if a Survivor ends up with two Wounded cards. In that case, they’re out – eliminated – and all their Equipment gets tossed aside. But here’s the twist: if there are multiple Survivors in the same area as me, the players can decide how to divide up the Wounded cards among them. Because, hey, cooperation means sharing the pain and suffering!

Here’s an example: When a Walker in a Zone with two Survivors makes its move, it causes one wound. You and your fellow players get to choose which Survivor will get the Wounded card and lose their equipment.

You can decide to give the Wounded card to a Survivor who isn’t carrying any equipment. Or you might choose to give it to a Survivor who is already wounded, putting them out of their misery!

It’s a feeding frenzy! Zombies fight in packs. Whenever all the Zombies in a Zone are activated at the same time as a Survivor, they all join forces to attack. Even if there are way more Zombies than needed to kill their victim, they will all take part in the onslaught.

For example: Let’s say there are seven Walkers in the same Zone as two Survivors. Four of the Walkers would be enough to take out the unlucky Survivors completely, but all seven will still use their turn to attack. It’s chow time!

Move

When I’m dealing with Zombies that haven’t attacked, I need to consider how they move. It’s actually pretty interesting. Here’s what happens:

  • If a Zombie can see a Survivor, it will move toward that Survivor.
  • If a Zombie can see Survivors in different Zones, it will go toward the noisiest group, even if they’re far away. Remember, each Survivor counts as a Noise token.
  • If a Zombie can’t see anyone, it will move toward the Zone with the most Noise tokens.
  • If a Zombie can’t see anyone and there’s no path to the Survivors, it will move toward the noisiest Zone as if all doors were open. They can’t go through locked doors, though.

When Zombies move, they always choose the shortest route to their target Zone. If there’s more than one route of the same length, the Zombies split into groups and follow all possible routes.

Two Walkers went down one path while the other two took the other. One of the Walkers joined the company of a Fatty, and the second group also received a Fatty (without any additional Walkers). The three Runners also divided themselves, with two joining the first group and the remaining Runner joining the second group.

To maintain symmetry, an additional Runner was added to the second group. The Survivors were now facing an even greater challenge!

A Challenging Scenario

So, here’s how it works: after all the zombies, including runners, have taken their first action, the runners get to activate again and take their second action. Example 2: Here’s another scenario. Imagine there’s a runner and a survivor in the same zone, and there’s also a walker in the adjacent zone. So, the runner takes advantage of its second action and attacks the survivor again, this time finishing them off. Tough luck for the survivor!

Example 3: Now, let’s say there’s a survivor surrounded by three walkers, two fatties, and two runners. So, the remaining five wounds don’t really matter in this case. After all the attacking is done, the runners use their second action. Step 2 – The Infestation Begins

So, here’s the deal. This map I’ve got shows where those pesky Zombies come out at the end of every turn. We call these spots Spawn Zones. So, you want to pay attention to the Spawn Zones, alright? Okay, let me break it down.

When it’s time for the Zombies to spawn, you point to a Spawn Zone and pick a Zombie card. Easy peasy. Now, here’s the cool part – each card has a line on it, and you gotta read the line that matches the Danger Level of the toughest Survivor we’ve got left. You know, the one with the most experience.

Hey, listen up: The Danger Level used for spawning Zombies is determined by the Survivor with the highest Danger Level still in the game. If that Survivor gets eliminated, the Danger Level drops to that of the next most experienced Survivor.

Running Low on Miniatures

So here’s the deal: the Zombicide box comes packed with a massive horde of Zombies that’s just itching to overrun a city. But, there’s a little snag – sometimes, you might find yourself running low on a particular type of miniature when you need to put a Zombie on the board. It could happen when they’re spawning, infiltrating a building, or simply multiplying.

What do you do in this sticky situation? Well, if you find yourself short on a specific type of Zombie, don’t worry. You should still place any remaining Zombies you have of that type on the board. Then, after all is said and done, those lucky few Zombies will get an extra chance to wreak havoc with an additional activation. It’s like a little bonus to make up for the shortage.
