Every time you move to a new location, roll a die to determine your fate. Depending on the result, you might encounter surprises, challenges, or even sweet rewards!

Variant 2: Divine Intervention

Feeling lucky? With this variant, you have the chance to seek the aid of the gods themselves. Certain actions will grant you favor tokens, which can be spent to call upon divine powers. Need an extra resource? A divine blessing may be just what you need to tip the scales in your favor.

Variant 3: Architect’s Toolbox

Are you a master builder at heart? This variant will let you channel your inner architect. As you progress in the game, you’ll acquire unique tools, each granting you a special ability. Use these tools strategically to enhance your actions and optimize your journey through the city.

If you’ve played Teotihuacan a few times, you might be interested in trying a different way of getting your Starting tiles.

But let me be clear, this variant is only recommended for players who really know the rules and have enough experience to come up with a strategy right from the start.

Instead of dealing each player 4 Starting tiles, we’ll put some face-up Starting tiles in the middle of the table. The number of tiles will depend on how many people are playing:

  • If there are 2 players, we’ll put 6 Starting tiles.
  • If there are 3 players, we’ll put 8 Starting tiles.
  • If there are 4 players, we’ll put 10 Starting tiles.

And for each Starting tile that lets you get a Discovery tile, I’ll draw one Discovery tile and put it next to the Starting tile it goes with.

When it’s time to pick our starting tiles, we each take turns choosing. The first player goes first and picks one starting tile, possibly with a Discovery tile connected to it. Then it’s the next player’s turn, and they also pick one starting tile. We keep going like this until every player has chosen one starting tile.

But we’re not done yet! After everyone has picked their first starting tile, we go back in reverse order. So now it’s the last player’s turn, and they get to choose another starting tile. This means they’ll have two starting tiles in a row. After this, we’re finally ready to move on to the rest of the setup process.

Dark Eclipse: A Game of Deadly Shadows

When playing a regular game of Teotihuacan, there’s always plenty of time to brace yourself for an impending Eclipse. But if you’re ready to up the stakes and amp up the competition, give the Sudden Death Variant a try.

  • In this intense version, an Eclipse occurs right after the player moves the light disc to the same space as the dark disc. There are no extra turns – everyone simply quickly tallies their score and prepares for the next phase of play.
  • Just like in the regular game, the Sudden Death Variant can end abruptly. If the third Eclipse is triggered or if an Eclipse is initiated by completing the Pyramid, the game comes to an unexpected halt.
  • Note: It is important to remember that in today’s highly competitive gaming world, choosing the right variant can be a double-edged sword. When someone is looking for an alternative way to interpret the rules, they may come across a variant known as “Tiebreaker.” If you’re unfamiliar with this variant, allow me to explain it to you.

Instead of the usual method where the player with the most Victory Points wins in case of a tie, the Tiebreaker variant gives priority to the player with the highest number on the Player Order token. This means that if two or more players have the same amount of Victory Points and cocoa at the end of the game, the player with the higher number on their Player Order token will be declared the winner.

It’s worth noting that this variant is not recommended for casual gaming groups or those who prefer a more friendly and cooperative atmosphere. The Tiebreaker variant is best suited for highly competitive gaming groups who enjoy a bit of tension and negative interaction in their games.

By following the Tiebreaker variant, you can elevate the intensity of your gameplay and add a new layer of strategy to your gaming sessions. However, it’s essential to take into account the preferences and dynamics of your gaming group before implementing this variant. Make sure everyone is on board and willing to embrace the extra challenge and potential for conflict that this variant brings.
