Embarking on an incredible journey aboard a luxurious train like the Mystery Express can feel a bit overwhelming at first. But fear not! I’m here to guide you through this extraordinary experience and help you navigate the sometimes snobbish and occasionally unfriendly atmosphere you may encounter along the way.

Your Personal Superpower

Before you fully immerse yourself in the tight-knit community of seasoned travelers aboard the Mystery Express, I suggest you make the most of the special power that comes with each of the five characters available in the game. Each character has a unique personality and an accompanying special power that gives them an advantage over other passengers.

Before we get started, it’s important that you take a moment to get acquainted with the train layout. Inside your Ticket wallet, there’s a summary of all the actions available in each Car. Make sure to give it a look!

Now, let’s talk about your Character token. Take a good look at it and place it in front of you with the power face up. This is your chance to use your character’s Special Power, which is listed on the cover of your deduction notebook. You can use it once per turn!

When I play the game, I need to be careful not to use my Special Power more than once in a turn. To keep track of this, I should turn my Character token over once I’ve used my Special Power.

When the train takes me to a new city, I can flip my token back so I can use my Character’s Special Power again.

Out of the five Characters in the game, four of them – Colonel MacDouglas, Contessa De Mirabella, Doctor Strauss, and Archibald Mansard – have a Special Power that is connected to the Crime cards with the same color as their miniature.

Once during my turn, I can take a peek at a Crime card from that category that another player just added to their discard pile.

When you place the card on top of your discard pile, your Special Power is activated. It works during the player’s turn, not yours. After looking at the card, return it to its owner’s discard pile.

This Special Power is really helpful, especially if you’re new to the game. It allows you to quickly figure out which Crime card is missing for your category. You can do this even if you haven’t seen many cards of that type in the game.

Miss Pransky, the fifth Character, has a unique Special Power. She gets an extra hour each turn, more than anyone else. This means she has more time to take actions in the game.

When I’m on the train, I like to people-watch. It’s fascinating to observe everyone and try to guess their stories. Sometimes I even play a little detective game in my mind. But one thing I’ve learned is that appearances can be deceiving. You never really know someone until you talk to them.

Discover Effective Investigation Techniques

Recording the Details of Your Observations

When you gather information and make observations during your investigation, how you record that information is crucial to the progress you make.

That’s why it’s important to choose a method that clearly distinguishes between seeing a crime element once and seeing it twice in the same turn. For example, using a checkmark to note the first card you see and then converting it into a cross-check when you see the same card again can be a useful solution.

However, it’s essential to keep track of the specific leg of your journey where you encounter each card. Failing to do so could lead you to draw incorrect conclusions.

Hey there! It’s important to keep track of who owns a card during the game. Unless that player happens to have both identical cards in hand (which is pretty unlikely), there’s a good chance that if they show you the same Crime card again on the next leg of your trip, it’s the exact same card they showed you before.

Stacking the Odds

Here’s a strategy to increase your chances of winning: during a turn, try to focus on a certain category or color of Crime card.

By doing this, you’ll maximize your chances of seeing all the pairs of identical cards in that category in a single turn.

Time for Detective Work

There’s a whopping total of 24 Time cards, and let me tell you, you’ll need a solid strategy to try and remember them all. Unless you’re one of those lucky few with a photographic memory, attempting to memorize them all at once is pretty much a lost cause.

But hey, don’t worry! I’ve got a game plan for you. Instead of trying to tackle them all at once, why not focus on a different detail of each card during each round? For example, pay attention to the position of the hour hand on one round, and then switch it up for the next card.

Now here’s a little trick to keep in mind: there are 3 copies of each Time card. Your goal is to spot the one that appears only twice in the whole deck.
