Risk Continents: A Closer Look
I’m sure you’ve heard about risk before. But have you ever thought about how risks can be grouped together based on their common characteristics? It’s fascinating to discover that risks, like the continents of our world, can be divided into distinct regions. Let’s explore these “risk continents” and learn more about them.
The Continent of Natural Hazards
One of the most prominent risk continents is the continent of natural hazards. Here, you’ll find risks such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. These hazards are caused by nature and can lead to significant damage and loss. It’s essential to understand this continent to better prepare and protect ourselves from its potential harm.
The Continent of Financial Risks
Another significant risk continent is the continent of financial risks. This continent is all about money and the uncertainties it brings. The vast realm of financial risks includes risks related to investments, banking, and economic stability. Navigating this continent requires careful planning and decision-making to safeguard our finances.
The Continent of Technological Hazards
Next, let’s take a closer look at the continent of technological hazards. This continent is filled with risks associated with technology and innovation. Cybersecurity threats, data breaches, and system failures are some examples of the perils lurking in this realm. Understanding this continent will help us safeguard our digital lives and keep our information secure.
The Continent of Health Risks
Now, I want to direct your attention to the continent of health risks. This continent is dedicated to risks that can affect our physical well-being. It encompasses risks such as diseases, pandemics, and accidents. Taking care of ourselves and staying informed about health risks is crucial for maintaining a healthy and happy life.
The Continent of Social Risks
Lastly, let’s explore the continent of social risks. This continent is centered around risks that affect society as a whole. It includes risks like political instability, social inequality, and community conflicts. Recognizing and addressing these risks is paramount for building a harmonious and inclusive society.
By understanding and acknowledging the existence of these risk continents, we can be better prepared to face the challenges they bring. Each continent has its own unique characteristics and requires specific strategies to mitigate and manage the associated risks. So, let’s continue exploring and learning about the world of risks, one continent at a time.
When playing Risk, winning often relies on controlling entire continents. Picking the right continent to start with is crucial. If you don’t have a strong starting position, you’ll find it challenging to compete with other players who have a better strategic advantage.
Choosing the best initial continent depends on various factors, such as the number of players in the game and the order in which everyone takes their turns.

3 players | Australia | North America | South America | Africa | Europe |
4 players | Australia | South America | Africa | North America | Europe or Asia |
5 players | Australia | South America | Africa | North America | Europe |
It’s important to note that these suggestions are not set in stone. No matter where you start, you always have a chance to win the game.
Now, let’s delve into each continent, exploring their unique details:

Australia: The Secure Base
Australia is like a fortress in the game of Risk. It’s a safe haven away from the chaos of the other players, offering a solid foundation to build your empire. And the best part? It’s easy to conquer and defend. But beware, it’s also a popular destination for other players.
When there are 5 or 6 players in the game, you can bet that at least a couple of them will have their eyes on Australia. This means you’ll face fierce competition and the risk of a quick defeat if you’re not careful.
It all comes down to luck, really. A few lucky dice rolls can make or break your chances of conquering Australia in the early stages of the game. It’s a risky move, but the rewards can be great if you succeed.
But don’t dismiss Australia as a potential target. It’s actually a smart move to claim a piece of this continent early on. With careful placement of your troops, you can secure your position and ensure your domination.

Discover South America
Welcome to the continent of South America! Just like North America and Africa, this continent is made up of four countries. South America may be a little trickier to conquer, as it’s located south of North America and west of Africa. However, this also means that it’s easier to defend, as it only has two entrances.
Once you have a strong hold on South America, it’s a smart move to start launching attacks on North America. Keep in mind, if another player already controls North America, it can be quite challenging to defend against their larger army.
Don’t worry too much about Africa as a threat to South America. Even though Africa can earn an extra army, it has to protect more borders, which means the African player has other worries and may not focus on invading South America right away.

About Africa
Africa is a continent that may seem easy to conquer, but holding onto its territories can be quite challenging. This is because North Africa serves as a natural invasion route that stretches from the Middle East through Southern Europe and North Africa, ending up in Brazil.
As a player representing Africa, I must defend three different fronts in order to protect my territories against players from three other continents.
Once I have successfully conquered a territory, Africa expands gradually by capturing neighboring regions like the Middle East and Southern Europe.
However, due to its central location, Africa constantly faces significant threats. To counter these threats, it is essential for me to adopt a defensive strategy by building up strong defensive forces. I should only launch surprise attacks when other players least expect it.

Conquering North America: A Powerful Playground
North America is an incredibly vast continent. Once you take hold of it, you gain a valuable advantage – an extra 5 armies every round, thanks to its three border territories.
Defending against an opponent who has established a strong presence in North America is no easy task.
When playing as the North American player, it is crucial to expand into South America. The 8 to 5 army imbalance in this region allows you to overpower your adversary effortlessly.
However, it’s also essential to venture into either Europe or Asia. Doing so prevents your opponents in those continents from maintaining complete control.
That said, as the North American player, you must be cautious of the South American player early on. They have no choice but to attack North America in their fight for survival.

Conquering Europe: A Tricky Task
Europe might seem like an easy region to conquer, but when you consider its central location and numerous borders, holding onto it becomes quite a challenge. As a player aiming to conquer Europe, you have to be opportunistic.
If you decide to go for Europe, you need to act quickly and use the bonus armies you gain to secure your position. The reason is that permanently securing Europe is incredibly difficult due to the constant threat of attack from the seven surrounding territories.
It’s common for players controlling southern and eastern Europe to form alliances and support each other. This mutual support can provide an added layer of defense.
As a European player, maintaining a balance of power is crucial. The reason is that all continents, except for Australia, are never more than two conquered countries away from Europe. This means you must always be prepared for potential attacks from multiple directions.

Conquering Asia: A Risky Endeavor
When I’m playing the game of Risk, one thing is crystal clear: targeting Asia right from the start is a risky move, a move that can be my downfall. You see, Asia comes with a huge bonus of 7 extra armies per turn, and that’s just too tempting for other players to allow me to hold on to it for long.
Now, let’s talk about Australia. Sure, it may be a small continent, but Asia has to be wary of it because Australia only has one outlet through Siam. On the western side, Africa can swiftly take the Middle East and launch attacks from there. In the northeast, North America poses a real threat. And let’s not forget about Europe, which also acts as a barrier to prevent Asia from becoming too powerful.
Asia is often seen as a continent where players harvest cards. It typically has a few armies occupying its countries, making it a prime target for those looking to snatch a territory when they only need a card.
