Game Components

When it comes to playing the game, there are a few important components that you need to keep in mind. Let me break it down for you:

Harbors: The first thing you’ll need is 9 harbor tokens. These tokens come in two types: 5 special 2:1 tokens, one for each resource, and 4 generic 3:1 tokens. They play a crucial role in trading and acquiring resources in the game.

Terrain & Tokens: Next, you’ll need the terrain hexes and tokens. Here’s what you’ll need:

Getting Started

First, gather all the necessary components mentioned earlier. Then, follow these steps:

1. Arrange the game map exactly as shown in the scenario diagram.
2. Place the harbor tokens, making sure to use the reverse sides of the shuffled stack.
3. Take the 5 wonder cards on the right and either duplicate or cut them out.

Preparing for the Game

When getting ready to play Catan, there are a few important rules to keep in mind:

• Start by building two settlements with roads or ships on the main island, following the basic rules of the game. Remember, you cannot place settlements on the small islands or at intersections marked with colored squares or red exclamation points.
• If you choose to build a settlement on the coast, you have the option to place a ship instead of a road next to it. This allows you to explore the seas right away.
• Each player should receive one Catan chit.
• Make sure to place the wonder cards next to the game board.

Special Ways to Earn Victory Points

If you decide to establish a settlement on one of the smaller islands, you’ll score a special victory point! Just grab a Catan chit and put it under your settlement when you build it. Don’t worry about other players having settlements there already.

Now, let’s talk about building the Wonders of Catan. If you’re the first one to start building, you get to choose from the five available wonders. The other players will have to work with what’s left. Remember, you can only build one wonder.

To start building a Wonder of Catan, you must meet the requirements stated on the corresponding wonder card. For example, if you want to build the Monument, you’ll need to have a city at a harbor and have built a trade route with at least five consecutive roads or ships that are not connected to any other routes. Once you meet these requirements, you can begin construction.

If you meet the requirements, you can start building a wonder by placing one of your ships on the corresponding wonder card. Remember to consider the resource costs and place your ship below them. Once you begin building your wonder, no one else can start building the same one.

The wonder is divided into four levels, each with its own set of resources. To advance to each level, you must pay the 5 resources listed on the wonder card.

After paying the resources for the first level of your Wonder of Catan, place a Catan chit on the “1” field of the wonder card. When you complete the second level, move the chit to the “2” field, and so on.

If you have enough resources, you can build multiple levels of your Wonder of Catan in the same turn.

Keep an eye out for the Pirate & Robber!

So here’s the deal: you know that game with the robber and the pirate? Well, forget about the pirate for now because we’re just focusing on the robber in this scenario.

The Game Ends

• When you finish building your Wonder of Catan (4th level).
• OR
• If you have 10 victory points and you’ve completed a higher level of your wonder than any other player.

Varying the Set-up

In this version, you have the freedom to rearrange and combine the terrain hexes and number tokens on the main island. How cool is that?

But wait, there’s a rule: The two terrain hexes next to the deserts can’t have favorable numbers (no 6s or 8s).
