After traveling for a long time, we finally arrived in Catan and began building our first settlements. We worked hard to construct harbors and improve our ships. Some brave Catanians even set off on daring voyages across the ocean.

As we settled into life on Catan, we started hearing whispers of smaller islands nearby. There were rumors of gold scattered across these islands, and we knew that gold was highly valuable to us.

We wasted no time in preparing our ships for the journey to these islands. Equipped with everything we needed, we set sail in search of the golden treasures.

Now, let’s talk about the components of the game.

If there are three of us playing, we’ll need eight harbor tokens. Five of these tokens are special 2:1 tokens that correspond to each resource, and the remaining three are generic 3:1 tokens.

In addition to the harbor tokens, we’ll also need 18 Catan chits and some terrain tokens. These tokens represent various resources and elements of the game world.

For 4 Players

Harbors: You’ll need 9 harbor tokens:

You’ll need 5 special 2:1 (one for each resource) and 4 generic 3:1.

Terrain & Tokens: You’ll need 24 Catan chits and:

Setting up a game can be both exciting and puzzling. There’s a lot to consider, like picking the right components and understanding how they interact with each other. Let me guide you through the process step by step.

First, let’s talk about the game board. It’s made up of different types of terrain hexes, each with its own unique characteristics. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find:

– Sea: There are 10 sea hexes on the board, and they have a value of 4. Keep an eye out for these if you want to have an advantage!

– Desert: The board has one desert hex, which is worth 0. It may not seem like much, but it has its own charm and can play a significant role in the game.

– Gold field: If you’re lucky, you’ll come across a gold field hex. It’s a rarity, with only 2 of them on the board. They are worth 2, so make sure to capitalize on them!

– Fields: These hexes are plentiful, with 4 of them on the board. They have a value of 1, making them a solid choice when strategizing your moves.

– Hills: There are 3 hills hexes, each worth 2. They can provide some advantage points, so keep them in mind as you plan your game.

– Mountains: Just like hills, there are 3 mountains hexes on the board, also worth 2. They may seem challenging to conquer, but the reward is worth it.

– Pasture: You’ll find 4 pasture hexes on the board, each worth 1. They provide a steady stream of resources and are great for sustainable growth.

– Forest: Forest hexes, numbering 4, have a value of 1. They are perfect for building and expanding your empire.

Phew! Now that we’ve covered all the terrain hexes, let’s move on to number tokens. They add an extra layer of strategy to the game. Here’s what you need to know:

– The number tokens range from 2 to 12, adding to the complexity of your decisions.

– There is a total of 13 number tokens on the board, with 11 of them scattered across the different terrain hexes.

– The remaining 2 number tokens have a value of 1 and are not placed on any terrain hex.

Once you have a good grasp of the terrain hexes and number tokens, it’s time to dive into the gameplay itself. Understanding the setup is crucial for developing a winning strategy, so make sure to take it all in.

Now that you’re equipped with this knowledge, you’re ready to embark on your thrilling adventure. Let’s setup the game and get started!

Alright, here’s what you need to do to get started with the game. First, set up the game map just like it’s shown in the scenario diagram that goes with the specific game you’re playing. If you have three players, use the three-player set-up. If you have four players, use the four-player set-up. Now, for the four-player set-up, you’re going to take the harbor tokens and randomly place them on the map. But here’s the twist – make sure you shuffle them first and put them upside down!

Additional Rules

Getting Started

I start by building my first two settlements on the main island, following the basic rules of Catan.

Don’t forget: If I choose to build on the coast, I can place a ship next to my settlement instead of a road. This allows me to explore the sea right away.

Pirates and Robbers

In this scenario, both the robber and the pirate will be in play.

The pirate will start on the sea hex where the pirate ship is located. In a game with four players, the robber will start in the desert. In a game with three players, the robber will start on the hills hex with the number “12”.

Special Points for Victory

When you build a settlement for the first time on one of the small islands, you get a special reward – 2 victory points! Just take 2 Catan chits and put them under the settlement when you build it. You can potentially earn 2 points for each small island, regardless of whether other players have already built settlements there.

To end the game, a player needs to reach 14 victory points on their turn.

The setup for the main island and small islands can be done in a similar way to a regular game of Catan.

For a 4-player game, follow the positions shown in the 4-Player Setup diagram to build the main island. Place the harbors according to the rules for basic Catan.

Don’t forget about the small islands for 4 players!

Hey there! Let’s dive into the exciting world of game setup. In the 4-Player Setup diagram, you’ll find 13 terrain hex positions that aren’t connected to the main island. To add some extra spice, grab the small island terrain hexes with the red numbers from the component list and randomly place them in those positions, including 4 sea hexes.

But wait, there’s more! Now it’s time to give those land hexes some character. Take the number tokens and place them randomly on the land hexes. Just remember, don’t put red production numbers next to each other. We want to keep things interesting!

What about the 3-Player setup?

No worries, my friend! For the 3-Player setup, we’ll focus on the main island. Randomly place the 14 land terrain hexes and 8 harbor tokens in the locations shown in the 3-Player setup diagram. Feel free to embrace randomness and mix things up! Once again, grab those number tokens and place them randomly, making sure to avoid putting red numbers next to each other. It’s all about balance and strategy!

Don’t forget the Small Islands for 3 Players!

So here’s the deal, folks. I’ve got some important info for you about setting up the game. Pay attention! In the 3-Player Setup diagram, there are 12 spots where you won’t find any terrain hexes near the main island. That might seem a little strange, but don’t worry, I’ve got a solution. Take those small island terrain hexes with the red numbers on the component list and put them in those empty spots. Easy, right?

Now, let’s talk about those number tokens. You’ll need to place them randomly on the land hexes. Just mix ’em up and plop ’em down, and you’re good to go. Simple as that!
