Optional Rules for Avalon

Hey there! Are you a fan of the game Avalon? If so, I’ve got some optional rules that can spice up your gameplay and make it even more exciting. Let’s dive right in!

1. Lady of the Lake:

Just when you thought you had a handle on the game, along comes the Lady of the Lake to shake things up. In this variant, one player takes on the role of the Lady of the Lake. Each night, the Lady is able to choose a player and find out if they are on the side of Good or Evil. This can lead to some tense moments as players try to figure out who the Lady has deemed trustworthy or suspicious. It adds a whole new level of strategy to the game.

2. Excalibur:

The sword of King Arthur himself makes an appearance in this variant. Excalibur is a powerful tool that can be used by a player who is on the side of Good. Once per game, the player may use Excalibur to determine the alignment of another player. This can be a game-changer, as it provides valuable information and can help the Good team uncover the traitors among them.

3. Lancelot:

Lancelot, the knight of the Round Table, brings some intrigue to the game with his dual allegiance. In this variant, there are two Lancelot cards in play: Lancelot of the Lake and Lancelot du Lac. Each Lancelot has a different allegiance and unique abilities. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the game, as players try to decipher who is on their side and who might be working against them.

4. Oberon:

Oberon, the mysterious and enigmatic figure, can make an appearance in this variant. Oberon is a solo player with no allegiance to either the Good or Evil team. He works alone and has his own win condition. Oberon adds an element of uncertainty to the game, as players are never quite sure where his loyalties lie.

5. Morgana:

Morgana, the enchantress of Arthurian legend, is a powerful character in this variant. Morgana is on the side of Evil, but she appears as Good to the Merlin. This can make it difficult for the Good team to trust anyone, as they can never be sure if the person they are working with is actually on their side or secretly working for the enemy.

6. Assassin:

In this variant, the Evil team has an Assassin who has the power to kill Merlin. If the Assassin correctly identifies Merlin at the end of the game, the Evil team wins. This adds an extra layer of tension and strategy to the game, as the Good team must work hard to protect Merlin and keep his identity hidden.

So there you have it – six optional rules that can add a whole new level of excitement and intrigue to your Avalon games. Give them a try and see how they change the dynamics of the game. Happy playing!

You have the freedom to complete the Quests in any order you want. This adds a strategic element to the game, as you’ll need to plan carefully.

In the team phase, you, as the leader, get to choose the players who will be on the team and which quest they will tackle. Keep track of your choice using the round marker.

Remember, the number of players you choose for the team must match the requirements of the Quest.

However, you cannot attempt the 5th Quest until you have successfully completed at least two other Quests.

In games with 7 or more players, the 4th Quest requires two failures during the quest phase to be considered a failed quest.

Plot and loyalty cards

If you’re playing with the optional plot cards in The Resistance, you’ll need to use these cards. Some plot cards require you to reveal your identity, but in Avalon, it’s crucial to keep Merlin’s identity a secret, even if his loyalty can be revealed.

When a plot card is played that would reveal your character card, you must use a Loyalty card instead. Make sure to choose the loyalty card that matches the loyalty on your character card. If you use the wrong loyalty card, you’ll lose the game.

Lady of the Lake and loyalty cards

The Lady of the Lake is an optional player ability. The player who has the Lady of the Lake token can look at another player’s loyalty. Unlike other character powers, the player with this ability is publicly known.

When the game starts, the Lady of the Lake token is given to the player on the Leader’s right. It’s the beginning of an important role that will affect the game.

After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quests, a special moment happens. The player who has the Lady of the Lake token gets to choose one player to examine. This is a big responsibility! The examined player will receive two Loyalty cards. Then, they must pass the card that matches their character’s loyalty to the Lady of the Lake. It’s crucial to choose the right card, because using the wrong one could mean losing the game.

The Lady of the Lake can’t say which card was passed, but she can talk about it with others. It’s a tricky situation!

The player who was examined will then receive the Lady of the Lake token. But remember, the Lady of the Lake can only be used three times in the whole game. And if you’ve been the Lady of the Lake once, you can’t be the Lady again. It’s a special power that can’t be used on the same person twice.
