Navaratnas Variant
Once you’ve played the basic version of the game a few times, you might want to try the more advanced “Navaratnas” variant, which is also known as “The Nine Gems” in English. In this version, there are some extra rules and changes:
Hey there! Did you know that you have the power to activate all 3 of your inactive workers? That means you can play with up to 6 workers in total. Pretty cool, right?
When it comes to playing the game, you’ll do it on the back of your Kali statue. Oh, and just to keep things organized, you can only store up to 8 dice at a time. Gotta make sure you’re not overwhelmed!
Now, let’s talk about playing on the back of your province board. There’s something special going on there. You’ll notice that there are special yields printed on the edge of the board. These yields can be connected to your road network, which is awesome. Just remember, they’re minor yields at first, but you can make them even better as the game progresses.
At the start of the game, mix up those brown yield tiles. Each player picks one randomly, reveals it, and places it on their province board. You get to decide which special yield on the board you want to cover. It’s all about strategy!
Now, here’s the exciting part: when you connect those brown yield tiles, they give you a special yield based on your progress in a specific field. So, make sure to keep an eye on that!
- #image.jpgYou earn 1 fame point for each tile in your province that has at least 1 market.
- #image.jpgYou earn 1 fame point for every 3 river spaces you have advanced so far. (Please note that the starting space does not count towards this calculation.)
- #image.jpgYou earn 1 money for each building in your province.
- #image.jpgYou receive 2 money for each yield tile you have connected.
- #image.jpgYou get 2 fame points for each bend that you have built in your province.
- #image.jpgYou earn 2 money per upgrade you have made so far.
When you have active workers in the game, you can earn 1 fame point for each one. It’s a great way to boost your score!
Now, let’s talk about yield tiles. There are different types of yield tiles in the game, and they can give you special benefits to enhance your gameplay. Here’s how they work:
First, place the remaining brown yield tiles, as well as all other yield tiles, face up on the buildings of the same color on the gameboard. These tiles can be acquired during the game to improve the special yield you receive from your province board.
The white, yellow, and red yield tiles offer unique advantages:
- If you roll a specific color on the dice, you can get 1 or 2 of those dice.
- You can make a boat move onto the next unoccupied river space.
- You can earn money.
- You can upgrade one of your buildings.
- You can gain 1 or 2 karma points.
Remember, always score for your province tile first before you take any special yield. And make sure not to move or cover any yield tiles that have already been placed on the board.
There are two ways to get more yield tiles in the game:
First, when you visit the dancer, you can place a worker there and give up a value-2 die of any color. In return, you get to take two dice of your choice from the supply and pick any yield tile you want. Put the tile face up on an empty spot of the same color on your province board. But remember, you only get the yield once you connect the tile to a road on your province board.
b) If you have fewer active workers than other players, things get interesting. Let’s say you have a total of 4 active workers, but one of the other players has already accumulated 5 workers. In this situation, you’ll receive 1 yield tile in the fifth stage of the current round. It’s like placing a worker, but since you don’t have any left, you’ll place a new yield tile on any unoccupied space of your board (make sure the colors match).
If another player has at least 2 more active workers than you, you get an extra yield tile. Just like before, you’ll place it as if you were placing a worker, but this time you can’t place any workers for a second time.
Pay attention! You can only take yield tiles in colors that have available space on your board. And of course, you can choose not to take a yield tile at all.
For Mixed Player Groups
If you’re an experienced player playing with beginners, you can use handicaps to level the playing field, which makes it possible for everyone to enjoy the game.
To do this, advanced players will use the Navaratnas side of their board and the back of their Kali statue, while beginners will use the basic side of their board and the front of their Kali statue.
In this mode, you are allowed to have up to 5 workers. The yellow, red, and brown yield tiles will remain in the box. You will play according to the basic rules, using only the white yield tiles. When you dance (as in the basic game), you will immediately receive the yield indicated on the white tile.
