Hey there! I wanted to talk to you about some important game terms and concepts you’ll come across while playing. They’re marked with small caps throughout the rules.

If you haven’t heard of it before, let me introduce you to the concept of Value. It’s all about how many Faction Blocks you have on either side of the card. You can have one, two, or three blocks. Just keep in mind that Special Cards don’t have any value.

Another term you should be familiar with is Faction color. This is determined by the color of the Faction Blocks on each side of the card. You’ll find blocks in blue, white, or red. Now, don’t get confused by the color of the Personality Cards’ background. That’s just to show you where Faction Blocks can be placed and doesn’t affect the actual faction color.

We also have the concept of Discard. Once you’ve played a card, it’s typically discarded to a common pile. And when the deck is all used up, don’t worry! Just shuffle the discard pile to create a fresh deck. From that point on, the A and B designations no longer matter because the two sets will be mixed together.

When I play the game, certain cards have a special effect that permanently takes another card out of the game. These special cards go back into the game box and never come back.

There’s something called a stack in the game. It’s made up of one to three Faction Blocks of the same color, stacked on top of each other. There’s also a Control Token that belongs to one of the players. Stacks help determine who has control over a province and how many votes a player gets during the Election Phase.

During the Action Phase, I can play cards directly from my hand. But I also have the option of saving up to four cards (five if any of them have a Sans-Culottes symbol) in my personal display. It’s like a little area on the table in front of me where I can keep those cards.

In Battle for Power, there are special cards called “Advancement” cards that you can use to gain an advantage when there’s a tie. These cards can be played during the Battle and Election Phases to break ties. But here’s the cool part: even if the tie is resolved or not, you can recycle these cards and use them again!

Ties happen quite frequently because factions are constantly at odds with each other. That’s why each Phase in the game tells you where a tie can happen and how to resolve it. And most of the time, you’ll do that by advancing cards from your personal display.

When there’s a tie, you and the other tied players can push forward a card from your personal display. This means playing a card that can help you break the tie. The value of the card, and sometimes its faction color, matters when deciding which card to advance. Keep in mind that once you advance a card, it gets discarded, whether the tie is resolved or not.

Let me break it down for you: When I’m the top dog in a Province, it means I’m in control. And when I control a Province, that gives me an edge during the sudden-death victory. So, being in control has its perks!

Time to cast a vote: When it’s Election Phase, each Province gets to have a say. They can return one vote for the faction that matches their stack. But here’s the kicker – Paris gets to return up to three votes! The player who controls the stack gets to hold onto a Faction Block until the Phase ends. Plus, that faction’s Election Marker gets bumped up one space. These votes can also be a game-changer during a sudden-death victory.

Choose your leader: When the elections are done and dusted, it’s time for the government to take shape. The faction that rakes in the most votes secures the power. And the player with the highest number of matching votes bags a whopping 5 Victory Points. But wait, there’s more! The player in second place isn’t left empty-handed – they walk away with 2 VPs. So, make those votes count!

Opposition: When it’s time for elections, the faction that gets the second-highest number of votes becomes the opposition. If you have the most votes that match the faction, you earn 3 VPs.

Presence: If you have a vote in the same color as the current government, you have presence in that government. Having presence is important because it allows you to play certain Special Cards.
