  • Let’s warm up! You can play Worm Up! on any smooth, flat surface.
  • First, let’s prepare the racecourse. At one end of the course, we’ll place the finish line. Inside the holes of the finish line, we’ll put 2 posts. Then, we’ll place the 2 remaining posts approximately 2 feet away from the finish line. They should be spread about 6 to 8 inches apart to form the starting line.
  • Now, it’s time to choose your color! Each player will have a set of 7 worm segments and a matching die. Line up your worm segments behind the starting line. Make sure they’re all touching each other.

Let’s Play!

Bidding Time:

Your die gives you five options for moving your worm forward: 4, 5, 6, 7, and X. Now, the X is special. It allows you to move any number of segments you want, as long as another player hasn’t already bid on that number (4, 5, 6, 7).

If everyone else has already bid on all the numbers, I don’t get a turn. But if I do choose to bid on an X, I can also move one of the finish line posts. That way, I can change the course or make it longer.

Each of us picks a number on a die and keeps it a secret. We put the die face in front of us. When we’re all ready, we reveal our chosen numbers at the same time. The player with the smallest number gets to go first. The person with the second-smallest number goes next, and so on.

If two or more players bid the same number, their bids don’t count and their worms stay put. Only unique bids, not made by any other player, will allow players to successfully move their worm.

Once a bid is made, you can’t repeat it for the next round. You have to use one of your remaining numbers for the next bid.

But don’t worry, once the next round is over and the worms have moved, you can use that bid number again in the following round. This only applies if your previous bid was successful. So if you and another player both bid 7 and cancel each other out, you’re free to bid 7 again next time.

How to Move

To move your worm, you simply take the last segment and move it to the front, and then keep repeating this action until your worm has moved the number of segments shown on the die.

If a worm gets blocked, it can move “backwards.” Worms can bend in any direction to block other worms, but they cannot split.

Worms cannot touch each other.

Blue, Red, and Yellow each made bids of 4, 6, and 7, respectively, but Green bid X and decided to make a move on turn 5, adjusting the position of the Finish Line.

When a player decides to bid X, they have the option to not only advance their worm but also move one of the goal posts on the finish line. To move the finish line, the player needs to place a finger on one of the two posts to keep it steady, and then move the second post.

This strategic move changes the orientation of the finish line and can potentially disrupt your opponents’ plans.

The Game’s Conclusion

The game comes to an end when one player’s worm touches the finish line.
