Rules for the Game When I Dream
Objective:
I’m here to tell you all about the game When I Dream. The goal of this game is to score the most points and become the best dreamer. Are you ready to play? Let’s dive in!
Components:
Here’s what you’ll need to play When I Dream: a deck of cards with different dream symbols, a blindfold, and a board with spaces for scoring.
Gameplay:
To start, one person will be the Dreamer and will wear the blindfold. The other players will take turns being the Fairy, Boogeyman, or Sandman.
When it’s your turn to be the Fairy, you’ll give the Dreamer clues about the dream symbols on the cards. You want the Dreamer to guess as many symbols as possible, but be careful – you can’t say the exact word written on the card!
As the Boogeyman, your goal is to confuse the Dreamer. You’ll give misleading clues or say the exact word on a card. You want to make the Dreamer guess the wrong symbols.
And as the Sandman, you have a special role. You can choose to either help the Dreamer or confuse them. It’s up to you!
At the end of each round, the Dreamer will take off their blindfold and recount their dream based on the clues they received. The other players will keep track of the Dreamer’s correct and incorrect guesses on the scoring board.
Scoring:
Points are awarded based on the Dreamer’s guesses. If the Dreamer guesses a symbol correctly, both the Fairy and the Dreamer earn points. If the Dreamer guesses incorrectly, the Boogeyman earns a point.
Winning the Game:
The game ends after a set number of rounds. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins!
Conclusion:
Now that you know the rules, it’s time to gather your friends and start playing When I Dream. Get ready for a dreamy adventure filled with mysterious symbols and imaginative clues. Can you become the ultimate dreamer? Let’s find out!

When I Dream is a fun game that is played in multiple rounds. The number of rounds is the same as the number of players. Each round has two phases: Night and Day. During the Night phase, one player, known as the Dreamer, attempts to identify the Elements. The Dreamer receives clues from the other players to help them in this task.
During the Day phase, points are scored by the Fairies and the Dreamer for each Element that the Dreamer correctly identifies. The Boogeymen, on the other hand, score points when the Dreamer makes a mistake. Additionally, the Sandmen score extra points when the Fairies and the Boogeymen score the same number of points.

Let’s Play the Game
A. Night Time
1. Assigning the Roles
The Dreamer mixes up the Dream Spirit cards and hands one to each player, making sure not to show it to anyone else.
Afterward, the Dreamer puts on the sleep mask and covers their eyes. They then pick the top card and place it at the bottom of the deck, revealing the next Element in line.
Once that is done, flip the sand timer to begin the game.
2. The Dream Begins
Let’s start the game by taking turns and giving clues to describe the Element. The player on the left of the Dreamer goes first, and we go clockwise from there. Keep in mind that the clues can only be one word.
We continue taking turns and giving clues until the Dreamer interrupts to make a guess. This means that the turns can go around the table multiple times. But there are some rules for the clues. Firstly, the clues cannot be derived from the Element itself. Secondly, the clues cannot be similar-sounding to the Element. Lastly, translating the Element into another language is also not allowed.
Now, here comes the exciting part. The Dreamer has the opportunity to interrupt the turns and make a guess. However, they can only make one guess.
- If the Dreamer guesses correctly, we place the card on the Yellow side of the board.
- If the Dreamer guesses incorrectly, we place the card on the Blue side.
After the guess, we resume taking turns and continue with the Dream card that has been revealed.
Important: You won’t know if your answer is right or wrong, so keep it a secret!
After two minutes, you have the option to give one last answer (but you don’t have to). If you choose not to, the last card stays on top of the deck without any effect.
Things to Remember
- If you’re confused and have no ideas, you can skip the current card by saying: “Pass”. The card will be placed on the Blue side of the board.
- If you can’t think of a good clue, you can skip your turn by saying: “Pass”.
- If you take longer than 5 seconds to give your clue, your turn will be automatically skipped.
- If a player messes up, they have to take the current Dream card and put it in front of them as a penalty. This will lower their score by one point at the end of the game. Keep playing with the new Dream card, but make sure the Dreamer knows that it’s changed.
- When you put cards on the board, make sure to spread them out so everyone can see the past Elements.
B. Day
1. Tell the Dream again
Before taking off your sleep mask, tell us about your dream. Try to remember all the Elements you guessed during the night.
As you tell your dream, feel free to make it exciting. Let your answers inspire you to create a dreamy, funny, or even silly story.
For example: “In my dream, I saw a ROOSTER fighting a VAMPIRE for a HAMBURGER while a DOG played the DRUMS.”
So, you’ve just finished telling us about your dream and now it’s time to take off your sleep mask.
Just to clarify: as you talk about the different parts of your dream, we can slightly rotate the Dream cards to help us keep track during scoring.
2. Let’s Count the Points
Now it’s time to reveal our Dream Spirit cards and see how many points we’ve earned:

- Fairies earn 1 point for each correct answer (Dream card on the Yellow side of the board).
- Boogeymen earn 1 point for each wrong or skipped answer (Dream card on the Blue side of the board).
- The Dreamer earns 1 point for each correct answer. They also earn 2 extra points if they mention all the Elements from the Yellow side of the board when recalling the dream.
- Sandmen compare the number of Dream Cards on each side of the board.
For example: I’m a Fairy and I scored 3 points. The Dreamer, Tom, scored 5 points because he remembered all of the Elements (3+2). I know Amy and Melissa are Boogeymen, so they each scored 2 points. Jack, on the other hand, is a Sandman and he scored 3 points.
3. The Round Ends
Let’s start by taking all of the Dream cards off the board and putting them back in the deck. Make sure you rotate and flip the cards so they’re all facing the right way!
Next, it’s time to choose the next Dreamer for the next round. This person will be sitting to the left of the current Dreamer. They will take the sleep mask and all of the Dream Spirit cards, including the one that was set aside.

Game Over
Once everyone has taken their turn as the Dreamer, it’s time to bring the game to an end.
We now need to tally up our scores. Remember, deduct one point for each penalty card you have in front of you. The player with the highest score emerges as the victor!
In the event of a tie, the player with the fewest penalties becomes the ultimate winner. And if there’s still a tie after that, it’s a shared victory among the players.
