Vikings on Board – A Game of Strategy and Adventure
Welcome to the exciting world of Vikings on Board, a game that will transport you back in time to a land of adventure and strategy. In this game, you will take on the role of a Viking chieftain, leading your clan to conquer new lands and build glorious monuments.
So, how do you play Vikings on Board? Let’s dive into the rules and discover the secrets of this enticing game. The game is played in a series of rounds, each divided into three phases: the Action Phase, the Voting Phase, and the Resolution Phase.
During the Action Phase, you will take turns placing your Vikings onto the board, strategically positioning them on ships, islands, and monuments. Each player will have a set of unique tiles representing their Vikings, and these tiles will determine which spaces on the board they can occupy.
Next comes the Voting Phase. Here, players will take turns secretly selecting one of the available actions for the round. Each action offers different benefits and can influence the outcome of the game. It’s important to think carefully and consider all your options before making your decision.
Finally, we have the Resolution Phase. In this phase, the actions chosen by each player are revealed, and the game board is resolved accordingly. Vikings on ships will sail to new islands, conquering them for their respective clans. Vikings on islands will build monuments, adding to their clan’s glorious legacy. And Vikings on monuments will score points based on their positions and the actions chosen by other players.
The game continues for multiple rounds, with players accumulating points and striving to outwit their opponents. The player with the most points at the end of the game is declared the victor and the ultimate Viking chieftain!
Now that you understand the basic rules, it’s time to embark on your own Viking adventure. Gather your clan, strategize your moves, and set sail for victory in Vikings on Board!

- 16 Viking Tokens (4 of each color)
- 16 Gambling Tokens (4 of each color)
- 15 Supply Tokens (5 Hide, 5 Grain, 5 Metal)
- 4 Scoring Circles (1 of each color)
- 3 Market Value Tokens

- Illustrated Rules
Setup
To start the game, place the game board in the center of the table.
Next, choose your color and collect the following components in that color:
- For a 2 player game: AB BA AB BA
- For a 3 player game: ABC BCA CAB
- For a 4 player game: ABCD DCBA

Note: When we talk about the order in which Vikings fell from hand, we use letters to refer to them (A, B, C, etc.).
- G. Seven supply tokens are placed facedown next to the “Add 1” action.
- H. Eight supply tokens are placed facedown next to the “Take 3, Add 1” action.
The Ships
In the game, each ship is divided into three parts: the front (bow piece), the middle (1-5 body pieces), and the end (stern piece).
The front of the ship is where you keep track of its value by adding supply tokens to it. The middle of the ship can be changed as players compete for control. Once a ship sets sail, a stern piece is added to show that it’s no longer in play.

The Game Board
The game board in Three Vikings is split into three sections: The Village, The Harbor, and The Fjord.
In The Village, you’ll find different buildings that represent the actions you can take on your turn. By placing Vikings in the circles next to these buildings, you select an action.
Moving on to The Harbor, it’s divided into eight moorings, each made up of four circles. This is where you can place bets on which clan you think will control a ship when it sets sail.
Finally, we have The Fjord. This is where the ship pieces are stored and rearranged. Each ship in The Fjord is connected to a specific mooring in The Harbor.
So, in Three Vikings, the game board is divided into The Village, The Harbor, and The Fjord. Each section offers different opportunities and strategies to explore. Get ready to set sail and conquer the seas with your Viking clan!
Hey there! Let’s talk about ship body pieces in the game. Did you know that all 24 ship body pieces are used in every game, regardless of the number of players? Even if you’re playing with just 2 or 3 players, the body pieces of the non-player colors will still be part of the game.
These ship pieces are just like the other body pieces in the game. You can move or exchange them using the village actions, and they are also considered when determining who controls a ship when it sets sail.
Let’s dive into the game play!
The game is played over seven or more rounds, and at the beginning of each round, the turn order is determined by the order of the Vikings in the village. The Viking closest to the “First Player” action will take the first turn, while the Viking nearest the “Swap” action will take the last turn.
When I play this game, I get to do something really cool. I take my Viking token from one side of the village, and I put it on an action on the other side of the village. It’s like I’m choosing what I want to do next. There are different actions to choose from, so it’s exciting to decide which one I should pick. Each turn, I get to be in control and make my move. It’s a game where I have to think and plan ahead. I have to think about what action will help me the most, and how it will affect my strategy. It’s an important decision to make, so I have to really think about it. The village is full of possibilities, and I have to choose the one that will give me the best advantage. I love playing this game because it lets me be in control and make my own choices. It’s a game that makes me think and strategize, and I always have a great time playing it.
Round Summary
Let’s talk about what happened in this round. It’s important to understand how everything went down and what it means for us. So here’s a breakdown of what happened:
First, let’s talk about my team. We did our best and worked really hard. We gave it our all and I’m proud of the effort we put in. We may not have won, but we definitely put up a good fight.
Now let’s look at the other team. They played really well too. They were strong and had some great strategies. We tried our best to counter their moves, but they proved to be a tough challenge.
Overall, the game was intense and exciting. It was a close match and both teams gave it their all. It’s always thrilling to be a part of a game like this.
After the match, I had a chance to reflect on our performance. There were definitely some areas where we could improve. We’ll take these lessons and use them to get better for the next round.
It’s important to keep in mind that winning isn’t everything. Sure, we all want to win, but it’s also about the experience and the lessons we learn along the way. We’ll come back stronger next time.
I want to thank everyone who supported us during this round. Your encouragement and cheers meant a lot to us. It’s great to have such a wonderful group of supporters.
In conclusion, while we didn’t win this round, we gave it our best shot. We’ll take the lessons learned and use them to improve for the next round. Thank you all for your support!
- When it’s my turn and I have the topmost Viking in the village, I pick up that Viking and move it to the other side of the village where the leader token is. I put my Viking on one of the empty circles and perform the action associated with it.
- Then, it’s the next player’s turn. They do the same thing with their Viking in line.
- We keep taking turns until all the Vikings have been moved to the same side as the leader token.
- If someone chose the “Set Sail” action, we move on to the next phase called “Setting Sail.”
- If there are still stubborn pieces left next to the game board, then I switch the leader token to the other side of the village, and a new round starts.
Setting Sail on the Open Sea
If I decide to “Set Sail” this round, I get to choose which ship will venture out into the open sea and be scored at the end of the round. To set sail, I simply have to attach my stern piece to the chosen ship and push it away from the harbor.
Here’s the catch: I can only choose a ship that already has at least one supply token on its bow and at least one body piece in its body. But if there are no valid options, I have the freedom to choose any ship I like.
Once I attach the stern piece, two important things happen: first, I need to determine who will control the ship, and second, I must divide the ship’s supplies amongst the players.
Step 1: Who’s in charge?
First, let’s take a look at the shields on each ship. Count up the total number of shields of each color on the ship’s body pieces. The clan with the most shields will have control of the ship. The clan with the second most shields will have the next level of control, and so on. If there’s a tie, the clan with the body piece closest to the harbor wins that tie.
Keep in mind that colors not present on the ship have no control over it and won’t get any supplies from it.
For games with 2-3 players, don’t forget to count the shields of the non-player colors too. Those non-player clans can take control of a ship from you!
Step 2: Divvy up the supplies
When it’s time for me to take control, I get to choose a supply token from the ship and place it face down on my scoring circle. Then it’s someone else’s turn. They do the same thing. We keep taking turns until all the supply tokens are gone.
If there’s not enough supply tokens for everyone to take one, tough luck. You don’t get any supplies this round. But if there’s more than enough, we keep taking supplies until they’re all gone. If I’m the only one on a ship, I get to take all the supplies from that ship. It’s every clan for themselves!
Let me explain how supply tokens work in 2-3 player games. If a clan that isn’t controlled by a player would take a supply token, we take one out of the game instead. Now, which supply token gets removed? Well, that’s up to the player sitting on the left of the one who would normally take the supply token from the ship.
Now, I’ve got an optional rule for you, specifically for 2 players. Here’s how it goes:
When your opponent decides to “Set Sail,” here’s what you can do. Take one of the Vikings that you’re not using for this game (it could be any color, doesn’t matter). Place it on any ship body piece of your own color.
Now, this Viking is extra special. It counts as an additional shield for you when we’re trying to figure out who controls a ship. This Viking will move along with its body piece and can’t be removed for the rest of the game. Just keep in mind that there can’t be more than one Viking on the same body piece.
Winning Bets
Imagine this: you have a shiny gambling token in your hand, ready to take a chance on the ship setting sail. You carefully observe the colors vying for control of the ship, considering where to place your bet. Once you make your move, you can sit back and watch as the ship embarks on its voyage.
If you had the insight to place your token on the color that takes control of the ship first, congratulations! You can now take your bet and place it facedown on your scoring circle. This clever move ensures that you will score points at the end of the game.
But what happens if Lady Luck doesn’t favor your initial bet? Don’t fret! Your token, although in the wrong place, can still be salvaged. Later in the game, you have the option to use the “Place 1 / Move 1” action. This allows you to pick up your token and shift it to a different ship, increasing your chances of success.
So, remember, when it comes to gambling on ships, it’s all about strategic choices and adapting your bets as the game progresses. By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a seasoned bettor!
- I can only bet once on the same ship. Just one barrel of the same color in front of the same ship.
- I must place my Vikings in front of buildings whose actions I am able to perform. If I am unable to perform any of the available actions, then I may place my Viking on the action of my choice (without actually doing it).
- A ship can never be longer than five body pieces (excluding the bow and stern).
- I can check the value of my supplies and bets anytime, but I can never reveal them to the other players.
- The most powerful actions are at the bottom of the village. But be careful, because if I choose these, I will end up taking my turn later in the next round.
Hey there! Let’s dive into the fascinating world of the game “Fleet.” I want to share some important details with you so you can have a blast while playing.
First off, it’s crucial to know that those cute little objects drawn on the ships don’t actually affect the game in any way. They’re just there for decoration and don’t represent any goods or resources.
Now, let’s talk about building powers! You can apply them to any ship that hasn’t set sail yet. This gives you some serious flexibility and allows you to strategize your moves accordingly.
One thing to note is that you can’t move supplies from one ship to another. Once you place supplies on a ship, they have to stay there until that ship sets sail. So choose your ships wisely!
Alright, fast forward to the end of the game. When the 7th ship sets sail, the game comes to an exciting close. However, keep in mind that the remaining ship at the harbor won’t score any points this time. It’s all about the ships that actually set sail.
Now here comes the interesting part – calculating your final score! To do this, you add up the value of your Supply tokens together with the value of your Gambling tokens. It’s like putting all your hard work and clever moves together to see how well you did in the game.
Let’s talk about how you can score points in the game. There are two types of tokens: Supply tokens and Gambling tokens.
Supply tokens are important because they score points based on their value in the marketplace. So, the higher the value of the token, the more points it will score for you.
On the other hand, Gambling tokens score points based on the number printed on them. If you have a Gambling token with the number 5, you will score 5 points.
It’s worth noting that Gambling tokens that didn’t win any bets won’t score any points. Only the tokens from the winning bets will give you points.
At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins. But what if there’s a tie? In that case, we have a tiebreaker.
The first tiebreaker is the player with the most supply tokens. If two or more players have the same number of points, the player with more supply tokens will break the tie. Supply tokens are really important here!
If there’s still a tie after looking at the supply tokens, then we move to the second tiebreaker. This time, we’re looking at the points scored from supply tokens. The player with the most points from their supply tokens wins.
If there’s still a tie after all this, don’t worry! The players will share the victory. It’s a friendly way to end the game and celebrate the accomplishments of all the players.
