The River Game Rules
Introduction
Do you want to play the River Game? It’s a fun and exciting activity that will challenge your problem-solving skills! In this game, you have a river and a group of objects that need to be transported across. Your goal is to get all the objects to the other side of the river while following certain rules. Let’s dive in and learn more!
The Setup
To play the River Game, you need a river (represented by the letter ‘R’ in the game) and a group of objects (represented by letters ‘A’ to ‘Z’). The river is divided into sections, and each section can only hold one object at a time. The objects are placed on one side of the river, and you need to move them to the other side.
The Rules
Here are the rules for the River Game:
– Only one object can be moved at a time.
– You can move an object from one section of the river to an adjacent section.
– You cannot move an object back to the section it came from.
– Some objects cannot be placed together due to certain restrictions. For example, object ‘A’ cannot be placed next to object ‘B’. You need to follow these restrictions when moving the objects.
The Challenge
The River Game is not as easy as it sounds! You must carefully plan your moves to avoid getting stuck. Sometimes, you may need to think outside the box and try different strategies. Remember, the ultimate goal is to get all the objects to the other side of the river while following the rules.

Let’s Get Set Up!
Alright, let’s get started! Place the Main Board 1 in the middle of the table, with the relevant side up (depending on whether it’s a 2-player game or a 3/4-player game). Each player gets their own set of components (River Board, Boat, and Pioneers) and puts their Boat and River Board in front of them, with the relevant side up (again, depending on the number of players) 2.
Next, take 4 of your Pioneers and put them on your Boat. The remaining Pioneer goes on the second round spot on the right-hand side of your River Board (you’ll see a Pioneer symbol there) 3.
Now it’s time to shuffle the Terrain Tiles. Place them facedown on the corresponding spot of the Main Board 4. To prevent the tiles from accidentally getting knocked over, you can make 2 shorter piles, but don’t worry, it won’t affect the gameplay 4.
Finally, draw enough Terrain Tiles to cover the spots on the Main Board that have a setup symbol. Make sure you have enough tiles to match the number of players. Once you have them, place them faceup on the designated spots 5.
When you first start playing the game, you’ll notice that there will be one more card than the number of players. These cards are important because they play a crucial role in the game.
To prepare for the game, you need to shuffle the Building Cards and place the deck on the rightmost island of the Main Board. It sets the stage for the game. As you play, you’ll draw and place one of these cards faceup on each spot on island 6. These cards hold the key to your strategy.
After that, it’s time to set up the resources. Look at the number of players and place the corresponding resources on the islands on the Main Board. If there are less than 4 players, the remaining resources can be put back in the box. You won’t need them for this game. It’s important to have the right resources to make the game interesting and challenging.
Hey there! Let’s get started with this fun game by taking the Bonus Tokens. If it’s just two of us playing, we’ll only need the ones with 2 dots on the front. Now, we’ll make two piles with them. For the “0” Tokens, let’s place them faceup in a pile on the right spot. For the other Tokens, we will sort them in descending order.
Next, we’ll take the Tokens we sorted and put them faceup in a pile on the left spot. Make sure to place the “6” Token on top, okay?
Now, here comes the exciting part! We’ll give the First Player Pawn to a randomly chosen player and we’re all set to start playing!
Object of the Game
So, in this game, we’re going on an adventure up a big river. Along the way, we’ll be gathering resources and building new things to create an awesome settlement. Whoever has the most impressive settlement at the end of the game will be the winner!
Preliminary Turn
Before we begin the game, each of us gets to choose a starting Terrain Tile. It’s like our own special piece to kick things off!
When it’s my turn to start, I look at the player sitting to my right. They are the First Player. Then, we go around in a circle, each taking a turn in a counterclockwise direction.
During my turn, I pick one of the faceup Tiles and place it in the first spot of my River Board, which is in the top left corner. After I take my Tile, we remove the remaining Tile from the game.
Next, we draw enough Tiles to cover all the spots on the island that match the number of players. We reveal these Tiles so everyone can see them.
The Tiles have different effects, but I’ll explain those later. Right now, just know that some Tiles give you resources, shown by a picture in a circle. Others let you store resources, which is shown by a warehouse symbol. And some Tiles do both!
Lastly, there are special Meadow Tiles that have their own unique effects. I’ll explain those at the end of the rules.
How to Play the Game
Hey there! Let me tell you all about this awesome game we’re playing. It’s called “Game Play,” and it’s super fun! I’ll walk you through the rules so we can get started.
So, in this game, we play a bunch of rounds. Each round, we take turns moving our Pioneers from our Boat to one of the islands on the Main Board and doing an action. It’s important to remember that we take turns in clockwise order, starting with the First Player.
After we’ve moved all our Pioneers and our Boats are empty, we have a cleanup phase. This helps us get ready for the next round. We keep playing rounds until we meet one of the game end conditions.
Now, here’s something interesting. Sometimes, not all players will have the same number of Pioneers on their Boats. If it’s your turn and your Boat is empty, you just skip your turn. This means that one player might get multiple turns in a row at the end of a round. It can be pretty cool!
What You Do on Your Turn
When it’s my turn to play, the first thing I can do is trade Resources for Food. All I have to do is give back 3 Resources, and in return, I can take 1 Food from the supply. If I have more than 3 Resources and there is enough Food available, I can do this trade multiple times.
After that, I need to choose a Pioneer from my Boat and put them on a spot on the Main Board. This allows me to take the action associated with that spot.
Choosing the Perfect Spot for Your Pioneer
When it comes to placing a Pioneer on the main board, there are a variety of options to consider. These options can be grouped into three distinct categories:
Okay, let’s talk about what you need to do. Remember, it’s essential to follow these instructions exactly. Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything in simple terms.
What to Do at Each Location
When you place your Pioneer on a spot, you must be able to do the action assigned to that spot. You can’t just put your Pioneer anywhere without being able to perform the action.
Claim a Terrain Tile
I bet you’ve been eyeing those shiny tiles. They’re just begging to be claimed. But what’s the big deal, you ask? Well, let me tell you.
When you claim a terrain tile, you’re essentially staking your claim on a piece of land in this virtual world. You’re saying, “Hey, this tile is mine!”
But why is it important to claim a tile? Well, for starters, it gives you a sense of ownership. It’s like having a little slice of paradise that you can call your own. Plus, it’s a way to show off your personal style and creativity. You can transform that blank canvas into something truly unique and beautiful. It’s a chance to let your imagination run wild.
And here’s the best part: claiming a tile also comes with some cool perks. For one, you’ll be able to customize your tile with all sorts of decorations and enhancements. You can make it your own little oasis, a place where you can kick back and relax. And who knows, maybe your tile will become the envy of all your friends.
But before you rush to claim a tile, there are a few things you should consider. First and foremost, you’ll want to think about the location. Do you want to be near the bustling city center or out in the peaceful countryside? The choice is yours.
Next, you’ll want to think about the terrain itself. Do you prefer lush green forests or sandy tropical beaches? Maybe you’re into snow-capped mountains or serene lakes. Whatever floats your boat, there’s a tile out there just waiting for you.
Finally, don’t forget about your neighbors. Who will you be sharing this virtual neighborhood with? Will you have like-minded neighbors who share your passion for design and creativity? Or maybe you prefer solitude and want to be in a more secluded area. It’s all up to you.
So go ahead, claim a terrain tile and make it your own. Show the world your unique sense of style and creativity. Let your imagination run wild and create a little slice of virtual paradise. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
Here’s what you need to do: choose one of the Terrain Tiles that are already faceup and put it on the next empty space along the River on your River Board.
If you cover up any production or storage symbols with the tile, you don’t get to use them anymore. But if there were any resources on those symbols, you can move them to a different spot that’s available (even on the tile you just put down).
If you’ve already completed your River Board with all 12 Tiles or if you’ve already used this action twice in a row, you won’t be able to choose it again.
Creating Valuable Resources
I want to talk to you about an important topic – producing resources. It may sound like a simple task, but creating valuable resources can make a huge difference in the success of your endeavors.
So, what exactly do I mean by “resources”? Well, resources are tools or materials that we use to help us achieve our goals. They can take many different forms, such as written guides, videos, or even software programs.
Now, you may be wondering why resources are so important. I’ll tell you why – resources save you time and effort. Instead of having to figure things out on your own, you can rely on well-crafted resources to guide you. They can provide you with valuable information, step-by-step instructions, and even practical tips and tricks.
When creating resources, it’s essential to think about your target audience. Who are you creating these resources for? What are their needs and preferences? By understanding your audience, you can tailor your resources to meet their specific requirements and make them even more effective.
Another critical factor to consider is the quality of your resources. You want to make sure that what you create is accurate, reliable, and easy to understand. Clear and concise explanations, well-organized content, and engaging visuals can greatly enhance the value of your resources.
Moreover, variety is key. People learn in different ways, so it’s essential to offer a range of resources to cater to different learning styles. Some people may prefer written guides, while others may prefer watching videos. By providing various resource types, you can reach a broader audience and provide them with options that suit their preferences.
Additionally, don’t be afraid to update and improve your resources over time. As technology evolves and new information becomes available, it’s important to keep your resources up-to-date. This shows your audience that you care about providing them with the most accurate and relevant information.
In conclusion, producing valuable resources is a crucial aspect of any endeavor. By creating resources that are tailored to your target audience, of high quality, and offered in various formats, you can provide valuable support and guidance. So, I encourage you to invest time and effort into producing resources that will elevate your endeavors and help you achieve success.
When it comes to gathering resources in the game, we have three options: Wood, Stone, and Clay. Each of these resources functions in the same way. The number of Production Symbols of each type visible on our River Board determines how many resources we can collect.
However, there is an interesting twist in 3 and 4-player games. If we are the first player to place a Pioneer on a Production island, we receive an extra resource as indicated on the board.
Keep in mind that the resources we collect need to be stored on our River Board. Each warehouse allows us to store one resource of any type.
If we don’t have enough room to store all the resources we just collected, we have two options. We can either give up some of the resources we just took, or we can get rid of resources we already possess by returning them to their respective islands.
Let’s say we want to produce Clay. To do this, we need to place a Pioneer on the Clay Island. In this 4-player game, we have three Clay Production Symbols, and since we are the first player to produce this resource in the current round, we can collect four pieces of Clay.
Hey there! Guess what? You’re down to your last 3 empty Warehouses. It’s a bummer, I know. But don’t worry, I’ve got a couple of options for you.
Option one: you can take all 3 Clay resources. Sounds pretty good, right?
Option two: if you happen to have a spare Stone lying around, you can return it and snatch up all 4 Warehouses. That’s an even better deal!
So, now it’s up to you. Which option will you choose? The decision is all yours. Good luck!
Food is a special resource that can substitute for any of the other types of resources. When I place my Pioneer on the Food Island, I can collect 1 Food. But here’s the cool part – I can also trade resources at the start of my turn to get food!
Resources are valuable and scarce. I can’t produce more resources than what’s already on an Island. If there’s no more Food, I can still send a Pioneer to the Food Island and choose 1 resource of my liking from that island. It’s like having an extra option!
When you’re playing the game, there’s a special action you can take called “Reserve a Building.” But, in order to do this, you need to have at least one Resource. You can get this Resource through your Production Symbols or by taking advantage of the extra Resource you get as the first Pioneer bonus. It’s important to remember that you can only choose this action if you have a Resource.
Hey there! When you’re playing the game, you have the option to choose one of the faceup Building Cards. All you need to do is pick one and place it facedown in front of you. This way, you can build it later but at a lower cost. Pretty cool, huh?
If you already have two facedown cards in front of you, you can’t choose this action.
Let’s talk about constructing a building.
If you put a Pioneer on this spot, you can build one of the buildings shown on the Main Board or a building you reserved before.
To build a building, you just need to pay the Resources shown on the Building card. Give them back to their respective islands. Remember, Food can be used as any type of resource.
When you build a special type of building called a Reserved Building, something great happens – you get to save some resources! In fact, you can choose one resource that you’ll be able to reduce the cost of by 1. How cool is that?
When you slide the Building Card under the right side of your River Board, you’re actually keeping your victory points hidden from others. It’s a little secret tactic that can give you an edge in the game. And as a little bonus, you get to take the next available Bonus Token, which can be really helpful in your expedition. Just put the token face down on the highest spot of your River Board.
Now here’s the really exciting part. The second Bonus Token you take will attract an extra Pioneer to join your expedition. You can remove that pioneer from its spot and place it on your Boat. This means you’ll have an extra pioneer to use during your next turn of this round, even if you were the last player. It’s like having a special advantage that the others don’t have!
Hey there! Let me tell you something cool about Bonus Tokens in the game. So, when you first run out of Bonus Tokens, don’t worry! You can still collect them when you build Buildings, even if they don’t give you any points. It’s just a way to keep track of the end game, you know?
Oh, and here’s a little tip: one of the Meadow Tiles can actually make those Tokens worth something at the end of the game. Pretty cool, right?
If you don’t have any spots left for Bonus Tokens, no problem! You can still build Buildings, but unfortunately, you won’t get any Tokens for it. Bummer, right?
If you don’t have enough resources to build a Building, you won’t be able to choose this action.
Grab the First Player Pawn
First things first, let’s talk about the First Player Pawn. It’s an important piece in the game that determines who goes first. In each round, the player who has the First Player Pawn gets to take their turn before everyone else.
Now, how do you get the First Player Pawn? It’s simple. Just take the pawn and place it in front of you. This means you’ll start the next round as the first player.
But what if you already have the First Player Pawn and someone else wants to be the first player? Well, that’s when things get interesting. You see, there’s a spot on the board called the Pioneer. If you send one of your pieces there, you can actually take the First Player Pawn from whoever has it. It’s like a power move that allows you to claim the coveted first player position.
But here’s the thing: if nobody decides to send a piece to the Pioneer, then the First Player Pawn stays where it is. So it’s a bit of a gamble. You have to weigh the risks and rewards and decide if it’s worth trying to snatch the First Player Pawn or not.
Now let’s talk about swapping terrain tiles.
Hey there! Let’s talk about swapping terrain tiles on your river board. It’s a nifty move that can really shake things up. When you swap two tiles, it’s important to know that this will have an impact on your final score. So, choose wisely!
Now, here’s the cool part. If there are any resources on the tiles you’re swapping, don’t worry. They won’t disappear into thin air! Instead, they’ll stay right where they are, safe and sound in your warehouse. And guess what? They’ll even move along with the tiles!
Cleanup Phase
When all the boats are empty, the round comes to an end. But don’t worry, starting a new round is easy! Just follow these steps:
First, remove any remaining terrain tiles from the island. We want a fresh start, right? Then, draw enough tiles to refill all the empty spots on the board. But wait, what if there aren’t enough tiles left? No problem! Just shuffle the discarded tiles to create a new stack and use them to refill the remaining spots.
Next, leave the building cards where they are, but don’t forget to replace any that have been built or reserved. We want to keep the game going!
Now it’s time for everyone to retrieve their pioneers from the main board and put them back on their boats. They’re ready for the next adventure!
And finally, the first player can go ahead and start a new round. Let the fun begin!
Important: On the River Boards, there are four special framed Terrain Spots. If you covered any of these spots during the last round, one of your Pioneers decides to settle there.
Put one of your Pioneers on the settlement shape instead of putting it back on your Boat. It will stay there until the game ends, but you can’t use it anymore.
End of the Game
When someone has 5 Bonus Tokens on their River Board (4 in a 2-player game) or has claimed their 12th Terrain Tile, it triggers the end of the game. Finish this round, resolve one last Cleanup Phase, and then move on to final Scoring.
Final Scoring
Players add up the scores of their Bonus Tokens and Buildings. Include the following bonuses:
So, here’s the deal: the player who gets the most points is the winner. And if two or more players have the same number of points, well, they both come out on top. It’s all about that final score, my friend.
