Before diving into the expansion, though, we strongly recommend that you’ve got the hang of the basic game first. Trust us, it’ll make things much easier to grasp.

Alright, let’s talk about what this expansion brings to the table. It adds 6 special character cards to the mix, which you can bid on during a new part of the auction phase. Basically, the auction phase now has two parts: the original auction phase and the special character auction.

Setting Up

Start off by following the original setup rules, but here’s what you need to add:

• Place the 6 special character cards face-up somewhere near the board.
• Put 600 Florins on the Banker card.

Gameplay

When playing Princes of Florence with this expansion, there are a few important changes to keep in mind. Firstly, the rules for the game remain the same, with two exceptions:

1. Players cannot exchange prestige points for money anymore. Instead, there are two new ways to acquire money:

– The Banker card allows you to obtain money.

– Completing works also rewards you with money.

Auctioning Special Character Cards

Okay, here’s the deal. I’m going to tell you how this game works. So, the first player starts things off by placing their marker on one of the spots on the special character card that they want to buy. If they don’t want to buy any of the cards, they can just pass. They can choose any spot they want to bid on.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The spot that the player chooses is their bid for the card. Most cards have 13 spots marked from 3 to 15. Each number represents a bid of 100 Florins. But, there’s one card, the Banker card, that’s a bit different. It only has 6 spots, ranging from 0 to 5.

There’s just one rule though: a player can’t make a bid if they don’t have enough Florins to pay for it. That would be a bit unfair, don’t you think?

Let me show you an example to make things clearer. Valerie places her marker on spot number 6 of the Merchant card. That means she’s bidding 600 Florins to buy the card. Pretty cool, huh?

When we play this bidding game, we take turns placing our markers or passing. The goal is to strategically bid on cards in order to win them.

Here’s how it works: if it’s my turn and I want to bid on a card, I can place my marker on any of the bidding spaces on that card. However, if someone else already has their marker on that card, I have to outbid them by placing my marker on a higher number. Only one marker is allowed on each card, so when I place my marker on a card that already has someone else’s marker, I have to give their marker back to them.

If I already have my marker on a card when it’s my turn to bid again, it means I have won the auction for that card. I have to pay the price of my bid to the bank and then I get to take the card and my marker, placing them both in my play area. I make sure to keep the character card face up.

Once a player passes, they are no longer able to participate in the bidding for a special character card during that particular round of the game. The auction for special character cards comes to an end when all players have either passed or purchased a card.

How to Use a Special Character Card

Players keep their special character cards face-up in their play areas until they decide to use them. The Banker card must be used immediately, while the Cardinal, Muse, and Princess cards can be used at any time during the action phase. The Merchant and Professor cards can be used at any time until the start of the next special character auction.

When I use a card, I return it to the special character card area near the board. If I use a card right away (or before the special character card auction ends), I place it face-down to show that no one can buy it again this round. If I don’t use the card when the next special character card auction starts, I have to return it to the special character card area near the board.

Descriptions of Special Character Cards

Banker: The banker is one of the only two ways for me to get money – the other way is by completing a task. As I mentioned in the “Preparation” section, we start the game by putting 600 Florins on the card. If no one buys the banker in a round, we add 100 Florins to the card. When I buy the banker, I take the money from the card and subtract my bid amount.

So, here’s what happened: I played the game and returned the card, adding 600 Florins to it. And get this, if I still have the banker at the end, I can trade my money for prestige points – 200 Florins equal 1 PP.

Let me give you an example: in the first round, nobody bought the bank, so the card now has 700 Florins. Then, in the second round, Donald won the auction for 200 Florins, paid that to the bank, and took the card along with its 700 Florins. Later on, he put the card back where it belonged and added 600 Florins from the bank for round 3.

Now, let me tell you about the Cardinal: this card gives you an extra action in the action phase. So instead of having just two actions, you have three. But be aware, it doesn’t lift the limitations that you can only have one freedom card and one profession card.

In the action phase, she used the cardinal to build a University, where people could go to learn and discover new things. Anna believed in the importance of religious freedom, so she made sure that the University welcomed students of all faiths. The Merchant: The merchant had two options for Anna to choose from, but she could only pick one:

• Option 1: Anna could take the item she bid on in the next auction for free. This would give her a chance to add even more valuable pieces to her collection.
• Option 2: Instead of taking an item, Anna could score prestige points based on her current rank on the fame track. This would help her reputation grow among the other players.

If you’re playing the game, you have until the next round’s auction ends to figure out which option is best for you. You always have the choice to go for the prestige points option right away. But here’s the thing: if you still have the merchant by the time of the next auction (excluding the special character card auction), you join in the auction just like you didn’t have the merchant at all. If you happen to win the auction, you’ve got a decision to make: either take the item for free or pay for it and get the prestige points.

Once upon a time: There was a competitor named Stephen (gray) who found himself in 4th place. He made a strategic decision to boost his score by adding 4 PP, which propelled him all the way up to 1st place!

The Muse: This magical entity has the power to enhance the value of every work completed by a player during the round’s action phase. The amount of enhancement for each Work is determined by the round number, ranging from 1 to 7.

For example: In round 6, Scott taps into the inspiration of the Muse, causing the works he completes using the poet and the philosopher to gain an additional 6 points each in value.

Hey there, let me tell you a tale! When I’m playing a game, there’s a special character known as the princess that helps me complete a Work in the action phase without playing a profession card. It’s a nifty action, let me tell you. By using the princess, the value of the Work I complete gets boosted by 3 for each landscape I have (even if they’re the same), 32 for each builder, 2 for each building, and 1 for each profession or recruiter. It’s like magic! One thing to keep in mind is that the princess is not a profession, alright? And here’s a small tip: when I use the princess to complete a Work, I can’t use any bonus cards.
