Your Mission

You need to be the first one to get rid of all your honeycomb-shaped cards. To achieve this, play cards that connect to the beehive and match on 2 or more sides. If you can manage to match on more than 2 sides, you will earn bonus plays, which allow you to play extra cards.

Now, here’s the trick: some cards make it easier for you to earn those bonus plays, while others make life harder for your opponents by forcing them to draw extra cards. This will help you prevent them from ending the round.

And watch out for those pesky Bears! They can be quite bothersome, so try to get rid of them quickly!

Setting Up

I’m going to show you how to play “The Bears and the Bees”. At the start of the game, we have a picture of a beehive. The objective is to end each round by getting rid of all our cards. We’ll add up the values of the cards left in our hands after three rounds, and the person with the lowest score wins.

To set up the game, we need to do a few things:

– First, we place the Queen card in the middle of the table.

– Then, we shuffle the cards really well. If we don’t have a deck of cards, we can find another way to mix them up.

– Next, if there are only 2 or 3 players, we deal 9 cards to each player. If there are 4 or 5 players, we deal 8 cards to each player.

– Finally, the dealer flips over the top card of the draw pile and puts it on top of the Queen card. The Queen card is special because all of its sides are honey, which means any color card can match with it.

Remember, if we draw a special card like the Drone, Worker Bee, Flower, or Bear, we have to put it aside face up and draw another card in its place.

Worker Bee (15)

In this game, you have cards with different colors and patterns, each representing a bee. The cards have one honey (wild) side and three worker bee sides. When you play a card with two matching sides, you can make an opponent of your choice draw one card from the deck.

If you manage to play a card with three matching sides, your opponent will have to draw two cards. And if you have a card with four matching sides, they’ll have to draw three cards! The more matches, the more cards your opponent has to draw.

You can choose to give all the cards to one player, or you can split them among two or more players. It’s up to you!

• Let’s say Breanne plays a Worker Bee card with two matching sides. She decides to make Annie draw one card.
• Now, Colton plays a Worker Bee card with three matching sides. He can choose to make Jackson and Blake each draw one card, or he can have one of them draw two cards. It’s his call!

Flowers (5)

This card is a real game-changer! Imagine a card that has the power to make everyone else draw cards – that’s what the Flower card does. When you play a Flower card, you can make the game interesting by forcing other players to draw cards.

How many cards they have to draw depends on how many sides of your Flower card match. If two sides match, all other players must draw one card. But if three or even four sides match, get ready for some serious drawing frenzy!

• Let’s say Ella decides to play a Flower card with two sides matching. That means all the other players have to draw one card. It’s a simple but effective way to give yourself an advantage!
• Now, imagine Calvin playing a Flower card with an incredible four sides matching. That means all other players have to draw three cards! Talk about turning the tides in the game and making everyone else scramble to catch up.

Bear (3)

When I play a game with Bear cards, I have to make sure that at least two sides of the Bear card are touching the beehive. But here’s the catch – one of those sides has to touch a honey side of a drone or worker bee.

The other side or sides of the Bear card can have any color. They don’t have to match anything specific, just as long as they aren’t touching the Queen bee.

If I decide to play a Bear card, I can’t play any other cards that turn. I don’t get any bonus plays. And once the Bear card is placed on the beehive, no other cards can be played that would touch the Bear – not even another Bear card!

Just remember, when playing a Bear card, it has to be touching honey.

How to Play the Game

When it’s your turn, you have a few options:

1. Play Your Cards

Choose some cards from your hand and place them in the play area in front of you. These cards can have different effects and abilities, so you’ll need to think strategically about which ones to play. Some cards might help you attack your opponents, while others might protect you or give you special powers.

2. Use Special Abilities

In addition to playing cards, you may also have special abilities or powers that you can use to your advantage. These abilities can have a wide range of effects, from healing yourself to causing damage to your opponents. Use them wisely to tip the scales in your favor.

3. Draw More Cards

If you don’t have any cards you want to play or if you just want to stock up on more options, you can choose to draw more cards from the deck. This gives you more choices and increases your chances of having a winning strategy.

4. Pass the Turn

Lastly, if you don’t want to do any of the above actions or if you’re unable to, you can simply pass your turn to the next player. They will then have their chance to make their moves and it will continue in this order until the game ends.

Remember, the goal of the game is to outsmart your opponents and be the last one standing. So use your cards, abilities, and wits to make strategic moves and come out on top!

• When I play my first turn, I can put a card down anywhere it matches at least 2 sides of the beehive.
• Once I start my second turn, I can play 2 cards per turn. The second card has to touch the first card.
• If I can’t play a card adjacent to another, it’s okay. But it’s better if I can.

If this was the first card I played, I could put a second card in one of these two spots.

Remember:

I can only put Honeycomb cards next to the Queen.

The Queen’s sides are honey (wild) and can match any other color.

When I play a card, it has to match 2 or more of the hive’s sides.

2. Get rid of a card

If you can’t or don’t want to play, you have a couple of options. You can either draw 1 card from the deck or discard a card and then draw 2 cards. Just be careful if you decide to discard a Bear card because that means you’ll have to draw 3 cards, which could hurt!

Now, let’s talk about some bonus plays. When you play a card that matches on 3 or more sides with other cards, you get bonus plays. These bonus plays give you the opportunity to play additional cards. It’s important to note that every card, except the Bear, can earn you these bonus plays. So keep an eye out for those opportunities!

When you play your first card and the card next to it (if you can), you have the option to use bonus plays. These bonus plays can be placed anywhere on the beehive if they match with 2 or more sides.

You have the chance to earn a bonus play with either your first card, your adjacent card, or both. In fact, you can earn multiple bonus plays in a row during your turn.

For example: Let’s say I start my turn by playing a card that matches with 3 sides. This earns me 1 bonus play. I then set up a play next to it that matches with 4 sides, earning me an additional 2 bonus plays. Now I have a total of 3 bonus plays. I use the first two to make 2-sided matches, and the third to make a 3-sided match, which earns me a fourth bonus play. With this fourth bonus play, I make a 2-sided match. What a fantastic turn!

Notes:

• If you are unable to use a bonus play, don’t worry! There is no penalty, and you don’t have to draw any extra cards.
• An adjacent play can only be made on the first card played each turn, and bonus plays cannot be made adjacent.
• Worker Bee and Flower cards have the potential to earn bonus plays, as well as make other players draw cards.

So, here’s what happened: I was playing this game called Beehive with my friend Reed. He played as a Worker Bee and had two sides touching the beehive. Then, he picked me to draw a card. Exciting stuff, right?

The clever thing about this move was that the Drone had three sides that matched perfectly.
