Fields Of Fame Game Rules
Introduction
Hey there! So, you want to learn how to play the Fields of Fame game? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, I’m going to break down the rules for you. It’s going to be an epic adventure, so let’s get started!
Objective
The objective of Fields of Fame is to become the most renowned Viking in history. You’ll be a mighty warrior, leading your crew to conquer and pillage different lands. It’s all about gaining fame and honoring the gods.
Game Components
To play Fields of Fame, you’ll need the following:
- A game board
- Viking warrior miniatures
- Action cards
- Land tiles
- Resource tokens
- Fame track
- God favor tokens
- Dice
Gameplay
Starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player will take turns. On your turn, you’ll have a few actions to choose from, such as:
- Raiding a land
- Pillaging a monastery
- Hiring new crew members
- Gaining god favors
Once all players have taken their turn, the round ends, and a new one begins. The game continues like this until a certain number of rounds have been played.
Raiding and Pillaging
One of the main actions in Fields of Fame is raiding different lands. Each land tile has a specific requirement, such as the number of crew members needed to raid it. If you meet the requirements, you can raid the land and gain resources and fame.
Pillaging monasteries is another way to gain fame. Monasteries are more valuable but require more crew members to pillage.
God Favors
Gaining god favors is crucial to your success in the game. Each god favor token represents a different ability or advantage that you can use to boost your actions. You can gain these tokens by completing certain tasks or achieving specific goals.
End of the Game
When the game ends, the player with the most fame is declared the most renowned Viking and wins the game. It’s all about honor and glory!
Conclusion
Well, that’s it! You now know the rules of Fields of Fame. It’s time to gather your crew and embark on an epic Viking adventure. Conquer new lands, gain fame, and honor the gods. Are you ready to become a legend? Go, mighty warrior, and make your mark in history!

Setting Up the Game
When starting a game of Raiders of the North Sea, you’ll need to gather the following items:
- A Township Board
- A Black Worker
- Three Grey Workers
- Three Reference Cards
- A Ship Card
- Six Encounter Boards
- Nine Score Markers in various colors
- Thirty Townsfolk Cards
- Fifty Wounds
- Twelve Jarl Tokens
- Two Valkyrie Dice
- Six Multiplier Tiles
Once you have everything, follow the instructions in the original rulebook to set up the game. However, there are a few changes and additions to keep in mind:
Alright, let’s get started! First, I’ll show you how to set up the Township Board. Place it at the bottom-right side of the Main Board. Next, grab all the Jarl Cards and shuffle them. Put them face down on the lower card space of the Township Board to create the Jarl Draw Pile. The space right above it is where the Jarl Discard Pile goes.
Now, it’s time to deal with the Jarl Tokens. Put all of them into the Black Bag. Before you place any Plunder or Valkyrie, remember to grab the required amounts of Jarl Tokens and put them on the new Township spaces. And don’t forget to add the 3 Grey Workers too!
Next, it’s time to set up the Fame Track H on the Township Board. Place one Score Marker of each player’s color on the ‘0’ space of the Fame Track. And finally, put all the Wounds in the Main Supply.
Now, each player will receive an Encounter Board. This board will come in handy to keep track of any Jarl encounters during the game. To complete the setup, shuffle all the new Townsfolk Cards together with the cards from the base game of Raiders.
Hey there! When you’re playing with 4 or more players, it’s a good idea to try out a new card draft. But don’t worry, you can still use this method if you have fewer players. Here’s how it works:
- I’ll deal 5 cards face down to each player.
- Take a look at your cards and choose one to hire for free, without needing any silver. Just put it face down in front of you.
- Out of your remaining 4 cards, give 1 card to the player on your left and 1 card to the player on your right.
- Now, let’s all flip over the card we hired earlier, so it’s face up.
- Everyone should now have a hand of 4 cards – 2 from your original hand and 1 from each of your neighbors.
Meeting Jarls
Enemy jarls have banded together to stop your recent raids. Will you surrender to their threats or face them in battle, axe against axe?
When setting up the game, I added Jarl Tokens to different sets of Plunder and Valkyrie cards. If I collect a set with a Jarl Token, I have to draw the top Jarl Card from the Jarl Draw Pile. Then, I have three options to choose from:
If I collect more than one Jarl Token in a raid, I reveal as many Jarl Cards as there are tokens. It doesn’t matter which order I drew them in. However, I have to face each Jarl in the order shown above: Kill, Subdue, Flee. I can’t choose to flee from the first Jarl and then decide to kill the second.
Let’s say you come across 3 Jarls while raiding. You have a few choices on how to handle them. You could decide to eliminate the first 2 Jarls and run away from the third one. Another option could be to subdue one Jarl and run away from the remaining 2.
Important Notes:
Remember, Jarl encounters take place before dealing with any Valkyrie in the same raid. Once you reveal a Jarl Card, you have to face them – you can’t change your mind and pick a different set of Plunder.
When you confront each Jarl, make sure to place the Jarl Token in the correct spot on your Encounter Board. The Jarl Token stays there for the rest of the game.
It’s crucial to inform new players that all Jarl Cards have a Military Strength of 5 or 6 and cost 3 or 4 Silver. This knowledge will come in handy when facing these encounters.
1. Kill
Killing a jarl, the enemy leader, is no easy task. You and your crew are bound to get tired and injured in the process. When you kill a jarl, you need to take wounds equal to the jarl’s military strength plus one.
Let’s talk about taking wounds:
– Even if they are strong, heroes can only take wounds up to their printed value.
– Crew members with zero military strength can’t take any wounds.
– But don’t worry, crew members won’t die from taking wounds.
After you’ve taken the necessary wounds, you get a bonus kill action, which is indicated on the bottom-right of the jarl card you encountered. You also earn 2 fame for each kill. This translates to moving your score marker up two spaces on the fame track. Finally, you place the killed jarl in the jarl discard pile.
Let me give you an example. So, imagine I’m playing a game and I come across this character called Jarl Ylva. Now, the interesting part is that I decide to kill her. And when I do, I end up getting 7 Wounds, gaining 1 Armour, and 2 Fame. After that, I discard Jarl Ylva and place the Jarl Token onto the Kill space of my Encounter Board. Pretty cool, right?
2. Subdue
Hey there! So you’re thinking about how to handle your enemies, eh? Well, let me tell you, there’s more than one way to go about it. While it might seem enticing to give them a grand death, convincing them to join your crew could bring even greater benefits in the long run.
Now, let’s talk about what happens when you decide to Subdue an enemy Jarl. First, you’ll need to take some Wounds, but don’t worry, it’s nothing you can’t handle. The number of Wounds you take is equal to the Jarl’s Military Strength minus one. Easy peasy!
Once you’ve suffered the necessary Wounds, you’ll also have to pay the Silver cost that’s shown on the Jarl Card. This silver will go to the Main Supply. And guess what? The Jarl Card will then belong to you. Pretty cool, right? It’ll become part of your crew, and you can use the Jarl’s powers and abilities to your advantage.
Oh, but let me give you a little heads up. Subdued Jarls are pretty strong-willed, so they won’t take any more Wounds or be targeted by Valkyries during the same raid that you found them. However, in future raids, they can take Wounds and be fair game for those Valkyries. So keep that in mind!
Once you’re engaged in the game, interesting things can happen. Let’s say I encounter Jarl Borg and decide to Subdue him. I take 5 Wounds, spend 3 Silver, and add him to my crew. If I still have Jarl Borg in my crew at the end of the game, I’ll score 3 Victory Points as long as I haven’t fled from any Jarls.
Now, when I Subdue an enemy Jarl, they become part of my hired crew. But here’s the catch: I can’t add Jarl Cards to my hand. No matter what tactics I use, I can only have a maximum of 5 Crew Members, including Jarls, at the end of my turn after dealing with Valkyrie.
At the end of the game, I can earn extra Victory Points for any Jarls that are still alive in my crew. Each Jarl card has specific Victory Point conditions listed on the bottom left side.
So, as you navigate the game, keep these options in mind: Conquer, Hire, or Flee. Each decision carries its own consequences and can impact your final score. Good luck and may the gods be on your side!
Sometimes, it’s just easier to run away. You might choose to flee an enemy Jarl, but be prepared for the shame and mocking that will surely come your way. When you make the decision to flee, you simply discard the Jarl Card without taking any wounds. However, you will have to make a difficult choice – either lose 1 fame or 1 victory point. If you have neither, then nothing happens.
If you find yourself unable to kill or subdue a Jarl, fleeing becomes your only option.
Healing Wounds
The only way to heal wounds is through certain actions at the Town Hall, or, of course, a glorious death.
If a Crew Card is removed from play for any reason – whether it’s due to a Valkyrie, a crew action, a Town Hall action, or anything else – all wounds on that card will be returned to the Main Supply. They won’t be transferred to other crew members.
Fame in Battle
In a culture where warfare is a way of life, only the greatest battles will be remembered.
Have you ever wondered what happens when you have too much Military Strength in a raid? Well, let me tell you. When you go over the maximum limit for scoring, you actually have the chance to gain some extra Fame for your impressive display of power.
Let me give you an example to help you understand this better. Imagine you are playing a game called Township and you decide to raid a Monastery. You have a Military Strength of 26, which means you have an excess of 6 points beyond the maximum allowed for scoring, which is 20.
Now, the Township board has a chart that shows 3 thresholds for gaining Fame during a raid. Since you have 4 excess Military Strength, you would gain 1 Fame. It’s like getting recognition or praise for your strong military power.
But here’s the interesting part: if you had raided the same Monastery with at least 32 Military Strength, you would gain 3 Fame points. So the more powerful you are, the more recognition you’ll receive.
Whenever you gain Fame during a raid, your Score Marker, which is like a little token that represents your points, moves up on the Fame Track. This way, others can see how successful you’ve been in your raids.
Speaking of raids, it’s important to note that Harbours don’t give you any Fame or recognition for your Military Strength. They are more focused on other aspects of the game.
Exploring the Township
Hey there! I’ve got some exciting news for you about the new Township update! Get ready to dive into 3 awesome raids with some new challenges. But hold on, there’s a twist – this time, we won’t be rolling any dice when we raid the Township, so brace yourself for a whole new experience!
Introducing Valkyrie Dice
If you’re looking for a little more excitement in your game, the 2 Valkyrie Dice are here to deliver just that. It’s a simple variant that adds an element of risk to your gameplay.
All you have to do is replace the original red dice with these Valkyrie Dice during setup. Don’t worry, they have the same results as the regular dice. However, there’s a catch – each ‘2’ side of the Valkyrie Dice features a Valkyrie icon.
Now, here’s where the fun begins. Whenever you roll a Valkyrie icon, you’ll have to treat it as if there’s an extra Valkyrie in the plunder you choose. Be careful though, if you happen to roll 2 Valkyrie icons (one on each die), you’ll have to deal with both of them.
End of the Game
When the game finally comes to an end, it’s time to score some points. Just follow the instructions outlined in the original rulebook to score your final Victory Points.
But that’s not all. You can also score Victory Points based on how high your Score Marker is on the Fame Track, just like you do for the Armour and Valkyrie Tracks.
Oh, and don’t forget about those Jarls in your crew. Keeping them alive can earn you even more Victory Points.
