Let’s Get Started!
I want to tell you about an exciting board game called “Refuge”, and I think you’re going to love it! In this game, we have to work together to build our own refuge in a post-apocalyptic version of Paris. Can you imagine that?
The Goal of the Game
Our goal is to build the best refuge we can within one year. We’re going to face challenges and gather new survivors to help us. It’s not going to be easy, but I believe we can do it!
Setting Up the Game
Alright, listen up! Here’s what you need to do:
First things first, place the gameboard right smack in the middle of the table, got it? Good.
Now, there are five locations on the gameboard. For each location, grab the number of dice it says and give them a roll. Place the rolled dice on their respective spots on the gameboard.
But here’s the deal: if you’re playing with just two or three people, take any leftover dice and put them back in the box. We don’t want any dice going to waste!
Next up, grab the Mission cards and give them a good shuffle. Once they’re all mixed up, deal three of them to each player. These are important, so make sure everyone has their fair share.
Now, take the deck of Mission cards and place it near the Bridge location on the gameboard. That way, everyone can easily access them during the game.
Alright, we’re almost there! Grab those Can tokens and put them near the Restaurant location. They’re going to come in handy later on, trust me.
Oh, and don’t forget about the Bat and Binoculars tokens! They need a home too. Put them near the City Center location, alright? And make sure the Heroine token is cozy near the Tower location.
And there you have it! You’re all set and ready to dive into the game. Just remember these steps, and you’ll be a pro in no time.
Alright, let’s get started! First, I’ll shuffle the Equipment tokens and draw 3. These will go face up on the 3 spaces in the City Center.
Next up, I’ll take the remaining Equipment tokens and make 3 stacks of 3 each. These will be placed face down for the other 3 rounds of the game, on the corresponding area of the gameboard.
Now, let’s move on to the Survivor tokens. I’ll spread out 5 of them beside the gameboard: 1 brawler, 1 farmer, 1 sage, 1 tinkerer, and 1 healer.
Time to shuffle the rest of the Survivor tokens and draw 6. These will be placed face up (white side) on the 6 spaces of the Train Station. Just like with the Equipment tokens, I’ll make 3 stacks of 6 Survivor tokens for the other 3 rounds of the game, and place them on the corresponding area of the gameboard.
Alright, everything’s set up and ready to go. Let the game begin!
Hey there! Let’s get started with setting up the game. First, grab the 4 Spring (number-1) Event tiles and give them a good shuffle. Draw 3 tiles and put them face up on the spaces near the Tower location 12. Don’t forget to return the remaining tile back to the box. Now, take the deck of Tinkerer Building cards A. But hold on, we need to remove the 6 “END” cards first. Once that’s done, shuffle the two Tinkerer decks separately. Place the “END” cards face down on the corresponding space of the gameboard. And to finish it off, stack the cards from the other Tinkerer deck on top of the “END” cards. And there you have it!
When you’re playing a game with 2 or 3 people, get rid of the first 3 cards from the Tinkerer Building deck. Put those cards back in the box for now.
Now, mix up the Sage D, Farmer E, Brawler B, and Healer C Building decks separately. Put each deck on its own space, number 16.
Next, take the first 3 cards from each Building deck and put them face up in a column below the deck. This will be the start of the deck, number 17. If you’re playing with 2 or 3 people, just put 2 of each card.
Each player gets their own player board, cube, and disc in their color. Put the cube close to the gameboard and put the disc on the 0 spot on the score track, number 18.
Oh, and one more thing: if you’re playing with 3 or 4 people, make sure to cover up the spaces on your player board so you don’t give yourself an advantage.
The youngest player gets to go first in the initial round. Starting from the player to the right of the first player and moving in a counter-clockwise direction, each player selects one of the 5 available Survivor tokens. Make sure to place it face-up on the dedicated space of your player board. Next, choose one Mission card from the 3 you have and position it face down in front of you. Take the other two Mission cards and tuck them underneath the Mission card deck, keeping them face down.
Now the game begins! It consists of 4 rounds, known as Seasons, and each Season has 4 steps to follow. Here they are:
1. Gather Survivors: In this step, gather as many survivors as you can.
2. Acquire Buildings: Move on to acquiring buildings in this step.
3. Resolve the Event and Feed Your People: Next, resolve the event and make sure your people are well-fed.
4. Prepare for the Next Season: Finally, prepare for the next season by taking the necessary steps.
Remember, the game’s objective is to survive and thrive in each round, so you must gather survivors, acquire buildings, handle events, and ensure your people are fed. By following these steps, you’ll have a better chance of winning the game!
So here’s how it works: First off, we all take turns, starting with the first player and going clockwise. Each player gets to choose a die that’s still on one of the 5 spots on the gameboard. And once you’ve got your die, here’s what you do:
- Take the die. Simple enough, right?
- Now, here’s where things get interesting. You get to perform the action associated with the location where the die was sitting. Each location has a different action, so it’s worth paying attention to what you’re getting into.
A. Take the Die
Alright, now for the nitty-gritty. Once you’ve chosen your die, don’t go changing its face or anything like that. Nope! Just add it to the special spot on your own player board. Keep that face intact!
And by the way, each face of the die represents a different type of survivor. There are five types in total. So, think about what you need and choose wisely!
The wild face on the final die is like a special character that you can choose to use in your group of survivors. You can only take a certain number of dice depending on how many people are playing the game.
Now, it’s time to do the action of the location where you took your die. There are 5 different locations, and each one has a unique action. Let’s see what they are.
A Tower to Explore
I’m playing a game called Tower, and there’s something I need to explain to you. You see, in this game, there are events that we can encounter. These events are cards that lie face up on the table, and I get to choose one of them. But here’s the catch – I have to flip it face down after I’ve made my choice. Are you following so far?
Now, pay attention because this is important. If I happen to be the first player to choose an event and flip it face down, I also get to take the Heroine token. Pretty cool, right? But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.
The thing about these events is that they can give me victory points at the end of the season. But there’s a condition to meet if I want to earn those points. I have to do something specific in the game that matches what the event asks for. So, I really have to keep an eye on these events and make sure I’m meeting their conditions.
Isn’t Tower an exciting game? I think so. It’s all about exploring and making strategic choices. I hope you’re as eager to dive into this adventure as I am.
Hey there! Let me tell you about the Heroine token. It’s this amazing feature that helps me conquer all sorts of challenges and obstacles.
A Bridge Across
Let’s begin with a little game. Draw the first 3 Mission cards and take your time to choose which one you like. As for the remaining 2 cards, simply tuck them face down under the deck.
These Mission cards hold great possibilities. They can grant you impressive new buildings or even reward you with valuable victory points at the end of the game.
Brand New Structures
Hey there! If you meet the requirements, you can add this card to your pile of Buildings. It’ll give you extra survivors or Can tokens to help you out.
My Top-Secret Mission: Don’t Tell!
This mission is so hush-hush, I can’t even let you in on the details until the game is over. But I’ll give you a hint – each mission you complete will earn you victory points. Keep your eyes peeled for the big reveal!
Restaurant
When it comes to dining out, we all know how important it is to find the right restaurant. You want a place that offers delicious food, excellent service, and a pleasant atmosphere. But with so many options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide where to go.
That’s where I come in. As an expert in the restaurant industry, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a great dining experience. And if you’re looking for the best restaurant in town, then you’ll love what I have to say.
First and foremost, it’s important to consider your own personal preferences. What kind of food do you enjoy? Are you in the mood for something fancy or casual? By understanding your own tastes and desires, you can narrow down your choices and find a restaurant that suits your needs.
But it’s not just about the food. The atmosphere of a restaurant can greatly impact your dining experience. Do you prefer a lively and bustling environment, or would you rather have a quiet and intimate setting? Think about what kind of ambiance you’re looking for and choose a restaurant accordingly.
Of course, the service is also a crucial factor. Nobody likes waiting forever for their food or dealing with rude staff. Look for a restaurant that provides prompt and friendly service. You deserve to be treated well when you dine out.
And let’s not forget about the price. Dining out can be a costly affair, so it’s important to find a restaurant that offers good value for your money. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go for the cheapest option, but rather choose a restaurant that delivers quality food and service at a reasonable price.
In conclusion, finding the perfect restaurant is all about understanding your own preferences and considering factors like food, atmosphere, service, and price. By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to enjoy a memorable dining experience every time you go out. So, the next time you’re looking for a great restaurant, remember to trust your instincts and choose wisely.
Hey there! Let me tell you something cool.
Imagine this: you’re in the middle of a post-apocalyptic world. Scary, right? But don’t worry, I’ve got a solution for you. It’s called Can tokens.
Can tokens are like little saviors that you can store on your player board whenever you want. You might be wondering what they do. Well, let me explain.
Picture this: you have a bunch of survivors, but not enough farmers to feed them all. That’s where Can tokens come in handy. If you’re short on food, you can use your Can tokens to feed your survivors. Pretty neat, huh?
So, with Can tokens, you have a way to keep your survivors well-fed without relying solely on farmers. It’s like having a backup plan, just in case things get tough.
Next time you find yourself in a tight spot, remember to turn to your trusty Can tokens. They’ll be there to save the day!
City Center
Hey there! I want to tell you about something super cool called the City Center. So, here’s the deal – you get to pick one of the Equipment tokens that are still available. How awesome is that? You’re like a kid in a candy store, but instead of candy, you’re choosing your very own Equipment token. It’s basically a ticket to a whole new world of possibilities.
Equipment tokens: These little tokens are your lifeline in the game. They team up with your survivors and help you overcome all manner of events. No need to worry about losing them along the way, as they stick with you until the very end.
The Bat token: When you play the game, the Bat token is a special token that gives you an advantage. It allows you to win ties for acquiring buildings. Basically, if you and another player both want the same building and have the same number of tokens, having the Bat token means you get it! It’s like having a secret weapon.
When you have the Binoculars token: You get to be the first player for the next season, and you earn 2 victory points when the game is over. You keep this token until the round is finished.
The Train Station
Hey there! When you arrive at the train station, you get to pick a Survivor token. Once you’ve chosen one, just place it face-up on your board in the right spot.
These Survivor tokens are super helpful. At first, they’ll help you find new buildings. But later on, they’ll become extra survivors for your refuge.
Imagine this: You’re at the Train Station, and you come across a special die showing a healer. You quickly grab it and add it to your player board. Excited by your find, you spot a wild Survivor token and snatch it up as well, placing it alongside the healer die.
2. Get New Buildings
Now, it’s time to expand your refuge! In this step, you get to acquire buildings based on the dice and Survivor tokens you collected earlier.
There are 5 different types of buildings to choose from:
Hey, let’s talk about distributing the Building cards, starting with the tinkerer buildings. We’ll go through the process for each type of building step by step.
- First, I’ll announce my strength.
- Then, I’ll claim the buildings.
- Finally, I’ll discard any used dice and move my used Survivor tokens to my refuge.
A. Announcing My Strength
So, it’s important to start with the player who has the Binoculars token, and then go clockwise. I’ll announce my strength in the type of building we’re distributing right now:
To figure out my strength, I’ll count the dice and Survivor tokens on my player board that match the current building type. Then I’ll announce the total.
If my strength is at least 1, I have the option to add as many of my wild survivors as I want to increase my strength in that type.
Understand the importance of selecting the right type of buildings as a Tinkerer. When it comes to choosing the right buildings, there are a few key factors to keep in mind. First of all, you should consider the purpose of the building. Are you looking for a place to live, work, or play? Each option comes with its own set of considerations and requirements. Once you have determined the purpose, you can then look at the specific features and amenities that are important to you. Do you need a lot of space? Are you looking for a place with natural light? These are all things to consider when making your decision. It’s also important to think about the location of the building. Is it in a convenient and accessible area? Will it be easy for you to commute? These are all questions that you should ask yourself. Finally, you should take into account your budget. How much are you willing to spend on a Tinkerer building? Consider the cost of rent or mortgage, as well as any other expenses that may be associated with the building. By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure that you choose the right type of building for your needs.
Hey there! I’m Marc and I’ve got the Binoculars token. That means I need to announce my strength first. But wait, the Tinkerers always go first, so I have to see what I’ve got. I’ve got 2 dice showing tinkerers and 1 tinkerer Survivor token. So, when I add it all up, my strength is 3. Not too shabby!
Now it’s Lucy’s turn. She’s got 1 die showing a tinkerer and 3 wild Survivor tokens. She decides to use 2 of the wild survivors to boost her strength. She’s feeling confident and announces a strength of 3 as well. Looks like we’re tied!
Claim Buildings
It’s time to claim some buildings. We go from the strongest player to the weakest, each taking a Building card. But here’s the catch, in a 4-player game, one unlucky player won’t get a Building card. Tough break!
If we have a tie in strength, the player with the Bat token (or the player sitting clockwise from them) wins the tie. The Bat always comes in handy!
Important: You need to have a strength of at least 1 to grab a Building card. So, don’t worry if not all the cards get claimed.
Hey there! Let me tell you something important: When you get a farmer building, you also collect the number of Can tokens specified on the card.
The Fascination of New Buildings
Are you intrigued by new buildings and the stories they tell?
When I walk down a street and see a new building, I can’t help but be captivated. There’s something about their pristine facades and sleek designs that sparks my curiosity. New buildings have a way of drawing you in and igniting your imagination.
Think about it. Every new building is a blank canvas waiting to be filled with life. It’s an opportunity for architects and designers to push the boundaries of their creativity and create something truly remarkable. From the moment they lay the first brick to the final touch of paint, every decision they make impacts the final product.
But it’s not just the architects and designers who play a role in bringing a new building to life. We, as observers, are an essential part of the process. When we look at a new building, we become a part of its story. We get to experience the thrill of discovery and the joy of witnessing something truly unique.
What makes new buildings even more fascinating is that they exist in a constant state of flux. They are always changing, adapting to the needs of the people who inhabit them. Whether it’s the addition of a new room or the renovation of an entire floor, they are always evolving.
That’s why I find new buildings so captivating. They are a testament to human ingenuity and our capacity for creation. They remind us that our world is never static, but always in a state of growth and renewal.
So, next time you come across a new building, take a moment to appreciate the beauty and the potential it holds. You never know what stories it might tell.
If you have all the survivors listed on the left side of one of your Mission cards, you can place that card face up in your refuge to get the items shown on the right side.
Step 3: Replace Dice and Activate Survivors
Once you have obtained the Building cards you wanted, it’s time to tidy up and prepare for the next round.
Start by discarding the dice you used for that particular building type, as well as any wild dice you utilized. Clearing your player board ensures a fresh start for the next turn.
Next, take a moment to flip the Survivor tokens you used during this round. By turning them to their illustrated side, you activate them and add them to your refuge. These survivors now function just like the survivors printed on the cards you obtained.
Remember: The wild survivors may seem versatile, but once you put them to work, they become slackers and cannot be used again.
I’m going to give you an example: Lucy throws away her Tinkerer die and adds the 2 wild Survivor tokens she used to her refuge, flipping them to their Slacker side.
3. Let’s deal with the Event and take care of your People
A. Handle the Event
When the round is over, there will still be one Event tile face up on the gameboard. This tile tells you how many equipped survivors you need in your refuge to overcome it.
Each survivor required by the event needs their own equipment:
If you have the Heroine token, it’s like having an equipped survivor of your choice. You can count it as any type of survivor you want.
Remember, the survivor and their equipment don’t have to be on the same card in your refuge.
When you successfully overcome the event, you’ll earn the victory points that are shown on the Event tile.
Example: Here’s a situation: Lucy is facing a challenge and she needs help to overcome it. The challenge requires her to have a team of 4 healers or sages. Right now, Lucy has 3 healers, 2 capsules, 1 sage, and 2 books. She’s missing either 1 capsule or 1 sage to meet the requirements. Unfortunately, Lucy doesn’t earn any victory points this time.
Example: So, I have this challenge where I need to have 3 equipped brawlers and 3 equipped sages to beat the event. In my refuge, I currently have 4 brawlers, 5 bullets, 2 sages, 2 books, and the Heroine token. To make up for the missing sage, I decide to use the Heroine token as an equipped sage. This way, I can score 6 victory points.
B. People
Let’s count all the survivors in your refuge, including the ones printed on the cards and the Survivor tokens you got from the Train Station. Then, we’ll update your marker on the population track to show how many survivors are living in your refuge.
The zone your marker is in shows how many farmers you need to feed your population.
If you’re missing a farmer, you’ll need to discard 1 Can token for each one you’re short on in order to successfully feed your population.
If you manage to feed your population, you’ll earn the victory points indicated in your population marker’s zone.
Imagine this: I have 24 survivors in my refuge, and I need 6 farmers to feed them. The problem is, I only have 4 farmers here. So, to make sure everyone is fed, I’m going to spend 2 Can tokens. I know it’s not ideal, but at least my population won’t go hungry. Plus, I’ll score 6 victory points for taking care of them.
4. Getting Ready for the Next Season
The game I’m playing has 4 Seasons. If I just finished the 4th Season, which is winter, then I can skip to the End of the Game. But if not, here’s what I need to do:
- Dice: For each of the 5 locations, I need to take the right number of dice, give them a good shake, and put them back on the board.
- Train Station: I have to bring in 6 more Survivor tokens. If I’m playing with a friend, we discard any leftover tokens and add the new ones.
- City Center: First, I put the Binoculars token and the Bat token back where they belong. Then, I add 3 more Equipment tokens to the mix.
When it’s time to start a new season, there are a few things we need to do. First, let’s take care of the tower. I’ll discard all the event tiles, and then shuffle the four event tiles for the new season. I’ll draw three of them and place them face up on their spaces. The last tile goes back in the box, and the heroine token returns to its space.
Now, let’s move on to the building cards. I’ll discard any remaining building cards and draw three new cards of each type. These new cards will be laid out face up below their respective decks. However, in a two- or three-player game, we’ll only lay out two of each type.
Lastly, let’s determine who goes first in the new season. The player who had the binoculars in the previous season will be the first player this time.
Now, let’s talk about the end of the game. In addition to the victory points you’ve already earned, it’s time to reveal your secret missions. See if you’ve completed any of them. For each successful mission, you’ll earn victory points. And don’t forget, certain Tinkerer buildings also grant victory points. Good luck!
