Paris Connection Game Rules
Welcome to the world of Paris Connection! In this game, you and your fellow players will take on the role of investors looking to build a successful rail network in the beautiful city of Paris. But be careful – with great opportunities come great risks!
The goal of Paris Connection is to accumulate the most points by investing wisely in the railway lines. You’ll start with a set number of shares and cash, and it’s up to you to make the right decisions to grow your wealth.
To begin the game, each player will place their marker on the starting space of the score track. The railway tiles are shuffled and placed face down in a stack. Four tiles are then drawn and placed face up for everyone to see.
On your turn, you have three possible actions:
- Buy Shares: You can buy up to three shares from the available shares shown on the railway tiles. Each share costs $1 million. Simply pay the money and place the shares in front of you.
- Build Track: You can build a track by selecting a railway tile with your marker on it. The cost to build is indicated in the upper left corner of the tile. Pay the required amount and place the tile next to your marker, connecting the railways that already exist. Then, advance your marker to the new tile.
- Sell Shares: You can sell shares to the bank for their current market price. The market price is determined by the number of shares still available for purchase. The more shares that are purchased, the higher the price will be. Selling shares is a good way to earn some quick cash.
The game continues with each player taking turns until all the railway tiles have been placed. At that point, the game enters the final round. Each player can now build tracks without using railway tiles, but the cost is $3 million per track. This final round allows players to complete their networks and increase their scores.
When the game ends, players will calculate their scores. Points are earned based on the number of shares owned in each railway line. The player with the most points is declared the winner and the master of the Paris rail network.
So, are you ready to embark on this exciting investment journey in Paris Connection? Choose your actions wisely, strategize your moves, and may the most successful investor win! Good luck!
The game includes several components:
- 1 Game board
- 6 screens
- 1 screen per player
- 198 locomotives
- 33 locomotives of each of the 6 colors
- 1 linen bag
- 6 locomotive storing boards
- 1 start player locomotive
- Instructions
The objective of the game is to build railroads across France as French entrepreneurs. By connecting different cities, the value of individual railway companies increases.
To succeed, you’ll need to use clever trading and bluffing tactics to acquire shares of the most profitable companies by the end of the game.
Setup:
- Each player receives a screen displaying their symbol.
- Place one locomotive of each color in each of the six start hexes surrounding the Eiffel tower hex.
I’ll start by explaining how the game is set up. Firstly, in each color, there is one additional locomotive, which is placed in the corresponding hex on the company value track.
Then, any remaining locomotives are put into a linen bag. The number of locomotives drawn from the bag depends on the number of players:
– In a game with 3 players, each player draws 10 locomotives.
– In a game with 4 players, each player draws 8 locomotives.
– In a game with 5 players, each player draws 6 locomotives.
It’s important to keep your locomotives hidden from the other players. You can use these locomotives to build track on the game board or keep them as stock in the railroad that you hold. So, make sure to plan your locomotive usage wisely!
How to Play the Game
Let’s dive in and learn how to play this exciting game!
When it’s my turn, I have two options to choose from, and I can’t just skip my turn:
Option 1: Building Track
I can use this action to have an impact on the companies’ values in the game.
To do this, I can take between one and five locomotives from any of the locomotive storing boards and place them on the hexes on the game board. But keep in mind that I can only choose from the available colors.
Now, there are a few important rules to keep in mind when it comes to building track:
The Rules for Building Track:
- I have an important tip for you when it comes to placing new locomotives! You need to make sure that the new locomotive is put beside a locomotive of the same color that has already been placed.
Hi there! Let’s talk about hexes. You know, those little squares on a checkered board? Well, it turns out that not all hexes are created equal. Some hexes are right next to each other, while others are separated by a checkered line.
Now, here’s something important to keep in mind: you can’t build a track across a checkered line. It’s like a big roadblock that stops you in your tracks. So, if you’re planning on building a track, make sure the hexes you choose are right next to each other and not divided by a checkered line.
Imagine you’re playing a game and you want to build a track from one hex to another. Well, you can’t just go through any hex. You have to make sure the hexes are adjacent, meaning they are right next to each other with no checkered line in the way.
So, whether you’re building tracks in a game or just having fun with hexes, remember this rule: hexes divided by a checkered line are not considered to be adjacent, and no track can be built across such a line.
Guess what? Something really interesting just crossed my mind. Did you know that two locomotives of the same color are always kept apart? It’s like a rule or something. They’re not allowed to share the same hex. Fascinating, right?
Hey there! Let me tell you about an interesting rule in this game. You see, in this game, there are different types of hexes, like rural hexes and city hexes. Now, when it comes to placing locomotives on these hexes, there are some important things to keep in mind.
First of all, a rural hex can have a maximum of two locomotives, but they have to be different colors. So, if you have a red locomotive on a rural hex, you can also place a blue locomotive there, but no more than that. It’s pretty cool how you can mix and match the colors!
Now, for city hexes, things are a bit different. You can only have one locomotive on a city hex. So, if you already have a locomotive there, you can’t place another one. City hexes are all about highlighting one locomotive and making it stand out!
But here’s the tricky part. There are three specific hexes where you can’t place any locomotives. These hexes are the Eiffel tower hex and the start hexes. So, remember, no locomotives allowed in those areas. Safety first!
That’s all you need to know about placing locomotives in this game. It’s all about finding the right balance and making strategic choices. Have fun playing!
Can you believe it? There’s a rule that says you can’t build a track that completely cuts off a company. That’s right, every company must be able to build track from its starting hex to at least one city. We don’t want any companies feeling left out!
Let’s Keep Score
When we’re all done building, we get to count up the points. You see, each locomotive we place might be worth some points. We’ll keep track of all those points on the scoring track of the game board. It’s like a roadmap for our success!
Trading: A Game-Changing Move
When you trade, you get the chance to shake things up by changing your shares in the companies. It’s an exciting move that can completely alter your strategy.
So, let me break it down for you. When you trade, there are two key actions you need to take – returning a locomotive and receiving new locomotives.
Returning a Locomotive: Making Some Room
First things first, you need to return one of your locomotives. Take a locomotive from behind your screen and place it on the corresponding color board. This clears up space for new possibilities.
Receiving Locomotives: Expanding Your Fleet
Now it’s time for the exciting part – receiving new locomotives! You can take one or two locomotives from a different locomotive storing board and tuck them away safely behind your screen. This is where your options multiply.
Keep in mind that the number of locomotives you can have is limited, depending on the number of players. Every move counts, so plan wisely and make the most of your opportunities!
- When playing with 3 players, there are 20 locomotives available.
- If there are 4 players, there will be 15 locomotives.
- For 5 players, the number of locomotives is reduced to 12.
- When playing with 6 players, there will only be 10 locomotives.
These are the quantities of locomotives you can expect in each scenario. The number of players determines the number of locomotives available for use. For instance, if you have 3 players, get ready to have a total of 20 locomotives at your disposal. The more players there are, the fewer locomotives will be available. You’ll need to adjust your strategy accordingly. While playing with 4 players, the number of locomotives decreases to 15. With 5 players, there are only 12 locomotives, and with 6 players, the number drops even further to just 10 locomotives. So depending on the number of people you’re playing with, you’ll have to strategize with the resources available to you.
Consider these figures carefully when planning your moves. Having fewer locomotives can make the game more challenging and competitive as everyone tries to secure their desired routes. It’s an important aspect of the game to keep in mind, as it can greatly influence your strategy. Just remember, the number of locomotives you have access to will depend on how many players are participating in the game. So, whether you’re playing with a small group or a larger crowd, make sure to take the number of locomotives into account and plan your moves accordingly.
Note: If you have more locomotives than the maximum allowed, you will lose 20 points for each extra one.
Game Over
The game will come to an end as soon as one of the following things happens:
One of the locomotive storing boards is left with no locomotives
Marseille is now connected by a track
Now, let’s all put away our screens and figure out how many points we’ve earned. For each locomotive that’s hidden behind your screen, you’ll get points equal to the number shown on the company value track. Let me give you an example to help you understand how scoring works with four players.
In this game, we have four players: Blue, Yellow, Red, and Green. Each player has a different number of locomotives in different colors. The number of locomotives is listed under the “Number of locomotives” column, and the corresponding value on the company value track is listed under the “Company value” column. To calculate victory points, you multiply the number of locomotives by the company value.
Here’s the scoring example for our four players:
– Blue has 6 locomotives, and the company value for blue is 12. So, Blue gets 6 x 12 = 72 VP (victory points).
– Yellow has 3 locomotives, and the company value for yellow is 9. Yellow gets 3 x 9 = 27 VP.
– Red has 4 locomotives, and the company value for red is 8. Red gets 4 x 8 = 32 VP.
– Green has 2 locomotives, and the company value for green is 3. Green gets 2 x 3 = 6 VP.
To find the total victory points, you add up the points for each player. In this case, it is 72 VP + 27 VP + 32 VP + 6 VP = 137 VP.
But, there’s a catch! If anyone has more locomotives than the maximum allowed, they have to subtract 20 VP for each extra locomotive from their total score. So be careful not to have too many!
And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the player with the most points wins the game! So keep your eyes on those locomotives and strategize your way to victory. Good luck!
