Let’s get started!

First things first, grab four pawns in the same color. Look for the gray path with a circle that matches your pawns’ color. Now, place all four pawns in the circle on the right side of the START area. Make sure every player does the same. And oh, make sure you’re sitting in a way that your START circle is on your right side, too!

Playing the Game

When we play, we all start by rolling two dice. If you want, you can use the dice cup to make it more fun! The person who rolls the highest number gets to go first. After that, the game moves to the next player on the left.

Getting Your Pawns In

Before I can start going around the gameboard path, I need to make sure that each of my pawns enters. Here’s how it works:

On my turn, I’ll roll the dice and try to get a total of five. If I roll a 5 on one or both dice, that’s great! I can enter one of my pawns onto the board. Or if I roll any combination of numbers that add up to five, like 4 and 1 or 3 and 2, I can still enter a pawn.

I always want to try and enter a pawn if I can. But if I can’t use a five to enter, I can use it for moving my pawns instead. I’ll explain more about that in the next section.

Imagine this, picture a game board in your mind. In the diagram above, you can see a circle marked “A” – that’s where the Yellow player’s pawns start. And there’s a space labeled “B” – that’s where those pawns enter the board. The pawns will follow the arrow around the board, going up the red path called “C,” and eventually making their way into the HOME Square. If you look closely, you’ll see that the gray spaces on the path have circles – those are called SAFETY spaces.

How to Move Your Pawns

Now, here’s where the fun begins. To move your pawns, you need to roll the dice and count the number of spaces you can move. Look at the arrow on the gameboard diagram for guidance. Here are the rules you need to follow:

• You have the option to move one or two pawns on your turn. For instance, let’s say you roll a 4 and a 3. You can either move one pawn a total of 4 + 3 spaces, or you can move one pawn 4 spaces and another pawn 3 spaces.
• It’s important to keep the game going, so you must make a move whenever possible. If you can’t move both pawns according to the numbers on both dice, you can choose to move one pawn using the count of either one of the dice.
• Remember, no more than two of your pawns can occupy the same space at any given time.

Doublets

When both dice land on the same number, it’s called doublets. Rolling doublets gives you an extra turn and could even earn you a special bonus move.

• If you roll doublets and still have pawns left to enter, you get to take your regular turn and then roll again.

When you roll doublets three times in a row, something interesting happens. Don’t worry, you don’t have to move any of your pawns during this turn. Instead, focus on the pawn that’s closest to your HOME, even if it’s already on your Home Path. Bring it back to your START circle – don’t worry, you’ll get a chance to bring it back into the game later. And just like that, your turn is over. Isn’t that something?

Surprising Your Opponent by Capturing Their Pawn

When you land on one of your opponent’s pawns by rolling the dice, you capture it. The captured pawn goes back to its starting circle, and you’ll need to bring it back into the game later.

You can’t capture pawns on their Home Path spaces or most Safety spaces. There is an exception though, which you can find out more about in the section about Safety Spaces.

If you capture a pawn after moving just one space on the dice, you have the option to continue your move with the same pawn or choose a different one.

When you capture a pawn, you get a bonus. At the end of your turn, you can move any of your pawns an additional 20 spaces. If you capture a pawn during a bonus move, make sure to complete your capture bonus before moving again.

If you can’t move any of your pawns the full 20 spaces, you will lose the bonus.

Safety Spaces

I want to talk to you about a really important concept in the game – Safety spaces. These spaces are marked with gray circles on the gameboard illustration. They are called Safety spaces for a reason – they provide a safe haven for your pawns. In fact, two pawns of different colors can never share a Safety space.

Now, what does that mean for you? Well, it means that if you have one of your pawns on a Safety space, it is completely safe. Your opponent cannot capture it. However, there is one exception to this rule. If an opponent’s pawn manages to occupy your ENTER space, and you try to enter a pawn, you actually capture their pawn. Talk about turning the tables, right?

But Wait, There’s More

Let me tell you a little bit about another important concept in the game – Blockades. Blockades can really ramp up the excitement and strategy. When four pawns of the same color occupy the spaces directly in front of your START space, you create a blockade. This is a powerful move because now your opponent cannot move any pawns past your blockade. It’s like building a fortress on the gameboard!

If there is a blockade on your ENTER space, you can’t bring any of your pawns into play. It’s like a closed door that you can’t open. Sometimes, you might have to break up your own blockade if you can’t make any other moves.

The two pawns that make up a blockade cannot join together to create a new blockade on a different space. It’s like they can’t team up to form a new barrier.

Getting to the Goal

To win the game, you need to bring your pawns all the way up your Home Path, which is the red path in front of you, and into the HOME square. Remember, you can’t move your pawns onto any spaces on your opponent’s Home Path.

Getting your pawns into home is not as simple as just rolling the die and moving the corresponding number of spaces. Instead, each pawn must enter home by an exact die roll, which means you need to roll the exact number to move your pawn into the HOME square. For example, if you’re the Yellow player and your pawn is on space C, you need to roll a 3 to move it into home.

Once you’ve successfully moved a pawn into home, you get a Home Bonus. This allows you to move any one of your pawns an additional 10 spaces at the end of your turn. However, there’s a catch. If you can’t move one pawn the full 10 spaces, you won’t get the bonus.

The game ends when one player manages to move all four of their pawns into HOME. This player is the winner!
