Goal of the Game

Setting Up

Now, let’s set up the game. You’ll need the game board, 16 suspect cards, 16 thief cards, 12 clue markers, a dice, a detective hat token, and a movement die. Place the game board in the center of the table and give each player a detective card.

The thief cards will be placed face-down on the game board, while the suspect cards are shuffled and each player is dealt one card face-down. The remaining suspect cards are placed face-up next to the board.

Playing the Game

Are you ready? Let’s start playing! The game is played in turns, and each turn has 4 steps:

1. Roll the Movement Die: Roll the movement die to determine how many spaces you can move on the board. Move your detective token accordingly.
2. Search for Clues: If you land on a space with a face-down thief card, you can search for clues. Roll the dice and try to match the symbols on the card. If you succeed, place a clue marker on that card.
3. Ask a Suspect: If you land on a space with a face-up suspect card, you can ask that suspect a question. Pick a suspect, ask “Did you see the thief?”, and check the answer on the back of your detective card.
4. Solve the Mystery: After each player has taken their turn, it’s time to solve the mystery! Gather all the clue markers and take turns accusing suspects. Use the clues to eliminate suspects and figure out who the thief is. If you choose correctly, you win!

Game Over

The game can end in two ways:

1. If all players run out of time and Mrs. Plumpert’s pot pie is left unsolved, the thief gets away and everyone loses.
2. If you correctly identify the thief before time runs out, congratulations! You win the game!

The Suspects:

Game Objective

So here’s the deal – a sneaky fox has swiped Mrs. Plumpert’s scrumptious pot pie and it’s making a mad dash for its secret hideout!

Our mission, if we choose to accept it, is to work together as a crack team of detectives. We’ll gather clues, sift through the evidence, and eliminate all the suspects. The clock is ticking, so we’ve got to figure out which fox is the culprit before it slips away.

Getting Started

I’m going to show you how to set up and play a game called “Fox in the Forest.” It’s a fun and exciting game that you’re sure to enjoy!

First, let’s set up the playing area. Take the game board and place it in the center of the table. This will be where all the action happens.

Next, each player will need a detective hat. You can choose any space in the center of the board to place your hat. Make sure it’s a spot that is easy to reach.

Now, it’s time to set up the game pieces. Take the fox pawn and place it on the start space, which is marked with a lox icon. This will be the starting point for the game.

Finally, let’s get the suspect cards ready. There are 16 cards in total, and you’ll need to scatter them face down around the perimeter of the board. Make sure to evenly distribute them, with 4 cards on each side. Once they are placed, choose any 2 cards to turn face up. These will be the initial suspects for the game.

Now that the game is set up, you’re ready to start playing. I hope you have a great time trying to solve the mystery in “Fox in the Forest!”

Alright, here’s what you need to do:

First, shuffle the 16 Thief cards. Make sure you don’t look at them! Then, insert them into the top of the Clue decoder. I find it easiest to hold the decoder with the window-side down and the slider closed.

Next, slide one of the Thief cards into the decoder. You want the red “Gamewright” logo to be sticking up out of the back. Now, keep the Clue decoder near you.

After that, put the remaining Thief cards back in the box.

Take the 12 Clue markers and stack them facedown. Keep them near the board.

Lastly, place the 3 dice within your reach.

And Now, Let’s Play!

The person who ate pie most recently will start the game. From there, play continues to the left.

It’s your turn now! Grab the three dice and let me know what you want to do before you roll. Are you going to “Search for Clues” or “Reveal Suspects”? If you choose to Search for Clues, you need to roll all three dice and hope to get some footprint symbols. But if you decide to Reveal Suspects, you’ll need all three dice to show eye symbols.

Roll the dice up to three times, and set aside any matching icons after each roll.

If, by your third roll, all three dice show the icons matching your choice, you have the chance to take one of the following actions:

A. Clue Search

Add up the footprint icons on the dice, and move your detective pawn a corresponding number of spaces on the board. You can move horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally.

1. When you land on a space with a paw print, draw the top clue marker and put it in the Clue decoder. Slide open the decoder and check if the color showing through the hole is green or red. Green means the thief isn’t wearing the item, and red means they are.
2. Now, take a good look at all the suspects whose faces are visible on the board. If any of them are wearing the item that was marked green, you can remove them from the game. Just put their Suspect card back in the box. But if the item was marked red, pay attention! You may have a potential guilty suspect on your hands. Remove any suspect who isn’t wearing that item.
3. Close the slider and place the Clue marker face up on the space where you landed to end your turn.

A. Move

First, let’s talk about moving. You can move on any square on the board, even on the fox’s path. But remember, you can also exit a paw print square from a different place than where you entered. So keep that in mind as you decide where to move.

B. Reveal Suspects

Now it’s time to reveal the suspects. Flip over two face-down suspect cards that are placed around the board. Take a good look at them. Then, look at all the face-up clue markers on the board. Pay attention to whether or not the suspects are wearing any of the items marked on the clues.

It’s time to use your memory! Try to remember if those items were marked as “red” or “green” in the clue decoder. This is important information that will help you catch the fox.

If a suspect is not wearing any item that was marked red, you can discard them. This means they are not the fox and your turn ends.

Uh-oh! If you don’t get a matching action from all three dice by your third roll, trouble is brewing! The sneaky thief gets closer to the foxhole, moving the lox pawn three spaces forward on the fox path. And that’s the end of your turn. Can you outsmart the thief and reach the end?

The Big Finale

1. Here’s what you do if you think you know who the guilty fox is: say the suspect’s name out loud and then reveal the Thief card from the decoder. If the name matches, congratulations! You’ve caught the culprit. But if not, well, that slippery fox manages to escape right under your nose.
2. If you manage to narrow down the suspects to just one card left on the board, something big is about to happen. Take out the “Thief” card from the decoder and compare it to the remaining suspect card. If they match, give yourselves a pat on the back – you’ve cracked the case and come out on top!
3. Watch out for the fox getting to the foxhole on the board. If it happens, that sneaky fox pulls a disappearing act and slips away once again. Better luck next time, detectives!

Variant

When you become skilled at the base game, you can increase the difficulty by moving the fox pawn 4 spaces instead of 3. And if you’re an expert, you can even move it 5 spaces!
