First things first, let’s talk about the objective. In One Night Revolution, you’ll find yourself in the midst of a political uprising. Your goal is to analyze the information available, identify your allies, and uncover the nefarious agents who are trying to sabotage the revolution.
Before we jump in, let’s take a moment to understand the roles you’ll be assuming. These roles include the Reformers, who want to preserve the revolution, and the Spies, who seek to undermine it. Each player will be assigned a role secretly, so nobody knows who’s who.
Now that we know the goal and the roles, let’s talk about the gameplay. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:
- Assign roles: Each player will receive a role card, and remember, keep it a secret!
- Night phase: Close your eyes and listen carefully as the Spies awake, reveal themselves to each other, and gather vital information.
- Day phase: The day breaks, and it’s time for the accusations to fly! Each player gets a chance to make statements, defend themselves, and accuse others. This is where you need to use your deductive skills to outsmart the Spies.
- Vote: After the discussion, everyone votes to execute a player they believe is a Spy. The player with the most votes is eliminated from the game.
- Reveal: Once a player is executed, their role is revealed. If they were a Spy, the Reformers rejoice. But if they were a Reformer, the Spies celebrate.
- Regenerate or Elevate: Depending on the outcome, the Spies may have the chance to regenerate, gaining new powers, or the Reformers may elevate, changing the dynamics of the game.
- Repeat: The game continues with the remaining players, cycling through the night and day phases until a winner is determined.

Let’s Play!
In One Night Revolution, we’re going to play a game where we need to figure out who is on which side. Some people are trying to take down a bad government, while others are working against them.
The game will go quickly, and in just one round, we need to find out who the informant is. The informants want to stay hidden, so the rebel fighters need to discover who they are in order to win.
In this game, you can say whatever you want, but not always the truth. It’s all about figuring out what will help you win. Strategy, thinking, and talking to other players are key to your success.
Getting Started
First, let’s set up the game. Put the HQ tableau right in the middle of where we’re playing, and make sure everyone has their own Reference card.
Next, we need to choose who will be the Controller. It’s pretty simple – just pick someone at random. The Controller gets the special Controller token.
Alright, let’s get started! Take a look at the chart above and shuffle the necessary ID tokens. Each player will receive one ID token face down.
Now, place the other three ID tokens face down on the HQ tableau. Each player needs to secretly check the role assigned to them on their ID token.
Next, it’s time to choose the Specialists for the game. Remember, you should have the same number of Specialists as there are players.
If you’re new to the game, we suggest using these Specialists for your first few matches:
Let’s get started by placing the Specialist tokens around the HQ tableau. Make sure to shuffle the Specialist cards first and deal one face-down to each player. Take a secret look at the ability assigned to you on your Specialist card.
The Night, Informants Reveal
Now that all the players know their ID and Specialist, I’ll make sure that everyone knows each other as well. Listen up as I repeat the following script:
The Night, Specialist Actions
Alright, it’s time for some nighttime action. Everybody, close your eyes and let’s get started. First up is the Controller. Pay attention, because each of us will have a turn to complete our Specialist action.
Now, during the night, you can take a peek at your Specialist card, but remember, no spying on anyone’s ID token or using signals unless your Specialist ability allows it.
Ready? Okay, Controller, open your eyes, do your thing, and then close your eyes when you’re done. Don’t forget to signal “Task Complete” to let us know you’re finished. Got it? Good. Now it’s the next player’s turn.
Alright, everyone, it’s your turn to shine. Each of you, in clockwise order, will perform your Specialist action. But remember, before moving on, make sure to announce “Task Complete” so we know you’re done.
We’ll keep going like this until the player on the Controller’s right finishes their Specialist action. Once they’re done, the Controller can finally take a sneak peek at their ID token. Exciting stuff, right?
When playing the game, there are specific actions that Informants and Rebels can take, depending on the Specialist cards they have. If you started the game as an Informant, you will perform the Informant action. If you started as a Rebel, you will do the Rebel action. It’s important to note that if you are unable to complete an action, you should not take any action at all.

The Day and Specialist Declaration
During the Day phase, starting with the Controller and going clockwise, each player must choose a Specialist token to indicate which action they took during the previous Night phase.
Players can choose any token they want, even if they are not telling the truth. If their desired token is not available, they can take a token from another player. It’s important to keep discussions limited during the Specialist Declaration.
The Day: Talking and Thinking
Once we all pick a token, we can start talking about the roles we got and the actions we took. We don’t have to spill all the beans or tell the truth.
Since our roles might change at night, we need to guide the conversation and figure out what role we have. The Rebels want to find the Informant, but the Informants want to stay hidden.
While we’re talking, we can’t look at any ID tokens or Specialist cards.
Here’s a cool idea: we can flip Specialist tokens to show who we think might be the Informants.
When we play the game, it’s a good idea to set a specific time for the Day phase. It’s recommended to allocate at least a minute per player, with a total of five to ten minutes as a general guideline. Another option is for the majority of players to agree when the Discussion & Deduction phase feels complete, and then we can move on to the Termination phase.
The Game’s Conclusion
Once the Discussion & Deduction phase is over, the Controller will initiate a vote by saying “3..2..1 .. Vote”. When this happens, all players must quickly point to another player, accusing them of being an Informant.
The player who receives the most votes will be Terminated and their ID token will be revealed. In the event of a tie for most votes, all players with the highest vote count will be Terminated, and their ID tokens will be revealed. If no player receives at least two votes, no Terminations will occur.
If an Informant is Terminated, the Rebel players emerge victorious (even if a rebel player was also Terminated).
If no Informant is fired, the Informants emerge victorious. But if all of us agree that the three Informant tokens are on the HQ board, we can decide together without anyone getting an unfair advantage. If we manage to do that, the Rebels win if their guess was correct, but the Informants prevail if any of us turns out to be an Informant.
In the next games, let’s pass on the Controller marker to the person sitting on the left. If we’re more experienced, we can mix things up by choosing different Specialists for each game, to keep things fresh and exciting according to our preferences.
