What’s the Game About?

The goal is to be the first player or team to reach and complete The Final Namesake square.

Setting Up the Game

We each chose a different color label for our movers. Then we put our movers at the START space. Each Namesake card has six letters on it. We agreed to play with the letter “C” for this game.

So, from now on, whenever we draw a new card, we will read the name next to the letter “C”.

Okay, let me explain how the game begins. We all have to do something called a “nameoff” round to decide who goes first (you can find more details about this in “The Squares” section). The player who wins the nameoff round gets to roll the die and move around the gameboard. And when they land on a square, they have to do what that square tells them to do. Simple, right?

Game Play

When you play the game, you will take turns drawing cards and reading the names on them. Each card has a letter, and you have to think of a famous person’s name that starts with that letter. The name will depend on the kind of square you land on.

• If you guess correctly: you can roll the dice and take another turn. Keep going as long as you keep guessing correctly!
• If you guess incorrectly: the player or team to your left gets a turn.

The Squares

Category Squares:

Hey there! So, when you land on one of the six types of category squares, you get to draw a name card. Now, here’s the deal: you or your team have 30 seconds to name just ONE famous person with that first name in that category. Sounds fun, right?

Let me give you an example. Imagine you draw the name “John”. Well, if that happens, you gotta think of a famous John for each of these categories:

• Stars & Co.: Jon Voight
• Fictional Characters: John Boy Walton (from TV’s “The Waltons”)
• Musicians: John Lennon
• History & Newsmakers: John F. Kennedy
• Athletes: John MacEnroe
• Authors & Artists: John Steinbeck

If you manage to do it, roll the die, move forward, and follow the directions for the next square. But, if you don’t succeed, control of the die moves to the left. And here’s the catch: on your next turn, you gotta draw a new card and win this square before you can move. Keep that in mind!

Note: Before you begin, I want to make sure you understand a crucial rule. If you’re sitting on a category square at the start of your turn, you can’t roll the dice just yet. Instead, you have to draw a new card and win that square before you can move forward.

What’s in a Name?

When you land on the nameoff square, it’s game time for everyone! This is a perfect opportunity for your opponents to take over the dice. If it’s your turn to land here, grab the card and check out the name next to the chosen letter.

Let’s say the name is “Mary”. Now it’s your turn to come up with a famous “Mary” in any category, whether it’s a real person or a character from a story, like Mary Poppins. Keep going back and forth, with each player or team naming a new “Mary” each round.

As the game goes on, you might find yourself running out of famous “Marys”. That’s when you bring out the timer. If you can’t think of a new “Mary” within 30 seconds, you’re out. The last player or team to come up with a fresh “Mary” becomes the winner and takes control of the dice.

When you play this game, it’s important to know how the dice work. They are the key to moving forward and winning the game. The dice have a special rule – no matter what square you’re on, they always roll and move you forward. But if you become the winner and then lose on your next turn, the control of the die moves to the left instead of going back to the original order of play.

It’s important to note that when it’s your turn again, you have to roll the dice if you’re resting on a nameoff square from your last turn.

Let’s Drop Some Names

Hey there! So, picture this: you land on a namedrop square. Pretty cool, right? Here’s the deal – you’ll have to think of more than one famous person with the name you pick! First, grab a card and take a look at the name next to the chosen letter (let’s say it’s “George”).

Now it’s time to roll the die again. Let’s say you roll a 3. You’ve got 30 seconds to come up with 3 famous Georges, whether they’re real or fictional, in any category you can think of! If you manage to do it, awesome! Roll the die, move forward, and follow the instructions for the next square.

But, here’s the catch. If you can’t come up with 3 famous Georges in time, control of the die moves to the left. On your next turn, you’ll have to draw a new card, roll the die again, and win this square before you can make any progress.

Oh, and one more thing: when it’s your turn and you’re resting on a namedrop square, you can’t roll the die right away. Nope, not allowed. First, you’ll need to draw a new card and conquer that square before you even think about rolling ahead.

Personalized Namesakes

Have you ever played a game where you have to name someone, like your boss or your opponent’s father? It’s a fun way to add an extra twist to the game! Let me explain how it works.

First, draw and read the card like you normally would. If you’re playing on a team, everyone on the team takes turns reading the cards. Let’s say you draw a card that says “Namesake your Mother.” In this case, the person reading the card would have to say the name of their own mother.

Sometimes, you might have to pick the player to be namesaked. Here’s what you do in that situation:

• Step 1: Without revealing Step 2, ask your opponents to pick any player. They can discuss it and decide together.
• Step 2: Once they’ve picked a player, you reveal who the reader must namesake. For example, if the player chosen is named Brian, then the reader would have to say “Brian” on that square.

And that’s how you play! The game continues as usual, but now you have an extra challenge of naming someone specific. It adds a fun twist to the game and gets everyone involved. Give it a try and see how it goes!

If you can’t personalize your Namesake (i.e., you don’t have a boss!), then choose a different player or draw a new card to start over. Sometimes you might get an unusual first name – that’s just luck! Better luck next time!

When it comes to judging, all you need is one opponent to recognize and accept your answer. If the other players haven’t heard of your answer, they can choose to believe you and accept it or ask for a new answer. Good luck and happy debating!

And remember, if you’re having trouble winning on an “Athlete” square, you can always roll and move backwards. If you successfully complete the square you land on, you can then roll forward and continue your turn.
